1.0 Objectives

Test operation of the HOP with a power source of 6 22.5V batteries in parallel.

2.0 Background

In order to avoid using a boost converter to supply 28V to the deployables on DINO, the idea of using 6 22.5V batteries was proposed. It is now necessary to see if the HOP will properly actuate with the battery.

3.0 Prior to Test 3.1 Environment  Room temperature (20° to 30°C)  Test area should be on clean surface  Testers should always where a ESD bracelet when handling the HOP  Testers should wear rubber gloves when handling HOP 3.2 Equipment  Static mat and ESD bracelets  6 22.5V batteries of about 500mAh each  One ammeter  A stopwatch or clock with a second hand  A recently calibrated HOP reset tool  A multimeter with thermocouple with range of at least 25°C to 100°C  HOP reset tool  Calipers

4.0 Test Procedure 4.1 Setup Initial Date 4.1.1 Connect the 22.5V batteries in parallel 4.1.2 Connect one battery lead to the HOP Connect the other lead to one plug of ammeter, such that the ammeter is in series with the HOP and batteries (but DO NOT connect to HOP 4.1.3 yet) Tape thermocouple to HOP body and set 4.1.4 multimeter to read °C 4.2 Testing Initial Date 4.2.1 Connect Power to HOP and start timer 4.2.2 Fill out table below Test 1 Time (s) Outer Temp(°C) Current (mA) Power Applied 0 Pin starts moving Pin fully retratced (0.310") Test 2* Time (s) Outer Temp(°C) Current (mA) Power Applied 0 Pin starts moving Pin fully retratced (0.310") Test 3 Time (s) Outer Temp(°C) Current (mA) Power Applied 0 Pin starts moving Pin fully retratced (0.310") * Only perform a new test after following the reset procedure below 4.3 Resetting the HOP Initial Date 4.3.1 Attach bottom half of reset tool. 4.3.2 If power has been off for more than 30 seconds after full actuation, turn power to the HOP back on until it reaches actuation temperature (about 70°C, or when pin moves) 4.3.3 Slowly apply force to the lever arm of the reset tool, and pull pin until it is pulled against the bottom part of the tool. 4.3.3.1 DO NOT allow HOP pin to retract more than 0.350” or actuator will be damaged** 4.3.3.2 Reset pin to 0.310” ±0.005” from circular face (known as nominal zero) 4.3.3.3 Verify using a set of calipers ** When using the reset tool, the bottom half ensures reset distance 4.3.4 Once HOP pin is reset to nominal zero, move nut so that it is flush against top of bottom tool half 4.3.5 Keep reset tool attached to pin for 2-3 minutes while paraffin cools. This is necessary to ensure that the pin stays at the nominal zero position and does not retract again 4.3.6 Unscrew reset tool bolt from HOP pin
