L. HANNA 13 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACH HAROLD JONES, BOTH 14 OF ANDERSON COUNTY, FOR THEIR LIVES OF SERVICE 15 TO T. L. HANNA HIGH SCHOOL AND FOR BEING 16 INSPIRATIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY, THE STATE, AND 17 THE NATION. 18 19 Whereas, since the mid 1960’s, James Robert Kennedy has been 20 the conscience for T. L. Hanna High School’s athletic teams. 21 Known as Radio to nearly two generations of T. L. Hanna’s 22 students because of the transistor radio that is his constant 23 companion, he, through the warmth of his personality and 24 unabashed love for T. L. Hanna High School, has brought out the 25 best in T. L. Hanna’s students, faculty, staff, and supporters: 26 compassion, humor, and love; and 27 28 Whereas, James Kennedy was hit by a car when he was five years 29 old and suffered irreversible brain damage. When Radio was in 30 his early 20’s, T. L. Hanna High School Football Coach Harold 31 Jones became acquainted with Radio and helped him learn to 32 speak. Coach Jones later “adopted” Radio as the team manager; 33 and 34 35 Whereas, since then Coach Jones has assumed the role as Radio’s 36 surrogate father. Coach Jones makes sure that Radio receives the 37 love, nurturing, and attention that any father would bestow on his 38 son; and 39 40 Whereas, for decades, in the summer months Radio was seen 41 whizzing in his grocery cart throughout Anderson, South Carolina. 42 He never missed a football game or track meet and came to T. L.

1 [4267] 1 1 Hanna High School every day, sometimes as early as 4:30 a.m. He 2 was loved and respected by all the students and a major part of the 3 high school’s athletics; and 4 5 Whereas, Radio’s and Coach Jones’ lives inspired the movie Radio 6 starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as James Kennedy and Ed Harris as 7 Coach Jones. This movie was the story of how Radio and Coach 8 Jones helped bring true interracial understanding to the T. L. 9 Hanna Football Team and High School shortly after the Civil 10 Rights era, and how both men were able to inspire the school and 11 community; and 12 13 Whereas, the movie about Radio and Coach Harold Jones brought 14 the inspiration and joy of their lives to people throughout the 15 nation and provided a perfect example of how a community can 16 help one man rise above his circumstances and affect the lives of 17 so many for good; and 18 19 Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the House of 20 Representatives to honor and recognize the lives of James Robert 21 Radio Kennedy and former T. L. Hanna High School Football 22 Coach Harold Jones for their inspiring life story that has touched 23 the lives of the people throughout this nation. Now, therefore, 24 25 Be it resolved by The House of Representatives: 26 27 That the members of the House of Representatives, by this 28 resolution, honor and recognize the lives of James Robert “Radio” 29 Kennedy and former T. L. Hanna Football Coach Harold Jones, 30 both of Anderson County, for their lives of service to T. L. Hanna 31 High School and for being an inspiration to the their community, 32 the State, and the nation. 33 34 Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be presented to 35 James Robert “Radio” Kennedy and Coach Harold Jones. 36 ----XX---- 37
