SYLLABUS
Title of the course: IED 143 (01) Introduction to Literature Year and Term: 2011-2012 Fall Class Hours: Wednesday 09:00-11.45 Classroom: B2/201
I. Aim of the course The course aims to prepare the students for the courses of the following years by making them familiar with the basic literary types and terms. Throughout the course, the students will examine different literary texts of poetry, prose and drama to be able to develop a better understanding of the literary texts and put what they learn into practice.
II. Course Outline Week I: General Introduction to Literary Terms. What is Literature? What is Fact and Fiction? Week II-III: LITERARY TYPES: I. POETRY: What is poetry? What is STYLE? How to analyse STYLE?/ FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE AND FIGURES OF SPEECH: Imagery, Symbol, Metaphor, Metonomy, Simile, Conceit, Personification, Paradox, Oxymoron, Irony, Hyperbole, Understatement, Pun, Euphemism, Antithesis- Opposition, Climax, Anti-climax, Rhetoric, Apostrophe. Week IV: VERSIFICATION AND STANZA FORMS: Diction, Tone, Stanza, Prosody, Meter, Accent, Scansion, Rhyme, Scheme, Canto, Couplet, Alliteration, Assonance, Onomatopoeia, Blank Verse, Free Verse. Week V: MIDTERM EXAMINATION I Week VI: NO CLASS (Bayram Holiday) Week VII: FORMS OF POETRY: Lyric, Ode, Ballad, Elegy, Sonnet, Epic, Mock-Epic, Chanson de gestes, Romance, Pastoral, Eclogue, Acrostic, Allegory, Satire, Caricature, Bestiary, Burlesque, Parody. Week VIII: LITERARY TYPES: I. PROSE: II a) Fiction: Short Story, Novella, Fable, Saga, Legend, Myth, Novel. II b) Non-Fiction: Journal, Memoir, Biography, Autobiography, Essay, Travel Literature. Week IX: ELEMENTS OF NARRATIVE: Plot, sub-plot, Action, Denoument, Prologue, Epilogue, Flashback, Foreshadowing, In medias res, Conflict, Suspense, Point of view, Character, Characterization, Protagonist, Antagonist, Anti-hero, Foil, Confidante, Fool. Week X and XI: LITERARY TYPES: III. DRAMA: ELEMENTS OF DRAMA: Dramatic action, Plot (Exposition, Rising action, Climax, Falling action, Resolution), Character (Flat and Round Character), Thought, Diction, Music, Spectacle, Style, Theme, Gestures, Unities, Hamartia, Hubris, Nemesis, Catharsis, Peripeteia, Anagnorisis, Aside, Soliloquy, Anachoronism, Deux ex machina, Chorous, Fool, Miles Gloriosis. Week XII: MIDTERM EXAMINATION II Week XIII: FORMS OF DRAMA: Tragedy, Comedy, Tragi-comedy, Farce, Romantic Comedy, Comedy of Humours, Comedy of Manners, Sentimental Comedy, Commedia dell’arte, Melodrama, History Play, Mystery Play, Miracle Play, Morality Play, Interlude, Pantomime, Masque, Comedy of ideas, Closet Drama. Method of Instruction The course will be conducted through lecturing and workshops (+homework), pair, group work and discussions. VI. Requirements The students are expected to read the assigned materials beforehand to be able to join class discussions. Attendance is obligatory. More than 11 hours of absence will be graded as F1. VII. Assessment There will be two midterm examinations and a final examination. In the grading of examination papers, up to 25 % of the total mark will be taken off for grammatical and writing mistakes. The students who get less than 50 in the final exam will automatically fail the course no matter what their midterm results are. Finally, the grading will be as follows:
Midterm I: 20 % Midterm II: 20 % Term Paper (+ Homework), Class Participation, Attendance: 15 % Final Examination: 45 %
