Peyton (1873–1947) of Richmond, consisting of a circular letter promoting three suggestions by the company for helping to alleviate the conditions of the Great Depression. The letter notes that these suggestions have been sent to a wide range of politicians and encourages Peyton to contact President Franklin Roosevelt (1882–1945) regarding the recommendations. Bennett, Edgar B. 3 pages. Letter, 13 November 1864, from Edgar B. Bennett (1842–1918) of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery to Mary E. “Minnie” Marsh (Bennett) (b. 1849) of Connecticut describing the conditions in the lines in front of Petersburg, Virginia. He also notes that General William Sherman has captured Atlanta, Georgia, and is moving towards Charleston, South Carolina, and adds that it is the job of the army in front of Petersburg to occupy Robert E. Lee’s army so that it cannot move against Sherman. He adds that he is disappointed in the presidential election. Purchased. (50673)

Brewer Family. .9 cubic feet. Papers, 1847–1983, of the Brewer family of Rockingham County, Virginia, namely Adam H. Brewer (1822–1905) and his son Dr. Scott W. Brewer (1858–1927). The collection contains clippings, correspondence, poetry, recipes, school exercises, scrapbook, stamp collection, teacher’s register from Greenwood School in Albemarle County, and information on the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. There is a good deal of material related to Adam H. The accompanying envelope is a mystery as it is addressed to Mrs. W. S. Davis; neither of Davis’ parents' initials. The inside of the envelope is addressed to Robbie Beale Davis (1872–1955), W. F. Johnson, Robert D. 1 leaf. Letter, 11 June 1944, written by Lieutenant Robert D. Johnson (1917–1944) while he was aboard a transport ship and serving with the 25th Marine Regiment, to his cousin Grayce Dietrich Crabtree (1918–2004) in Richmond. He writes about being sent into combat in the Mariana Islands, and inquires about family back home. Johnson died in combat four days after this letter was written. Kolbe, J. A. 1 photograph and 1 leaf. A group photograph, circa 1944, of Company C, 192nd Battalion, 60th Regiment training group, at the U. S. Army Infantry Replacement Training Center, Camp Blanding, Florida. An inscription on the back of the photograph, dated 18 December 1944, is addressed to “Kolbe” and states that the group is preparing to depart, presumably for Europe. It is signed by Harry Hall, Frank Mehle, Sol Glass, John W. Goff, and Stan Gordon. The addressee is J. A. (Junius A.) Kolbe (1923–2012), who according to the donor was a part of this training group but remained in the United States to serve as a radio instructor. Lawson, W. Z. T. 2 pages. Letter, 11 November 1861, from W. Z. T. Lawson of Patrick County, Virginia, probably to his brother-in-law Edward Payne regarding a book he is returning, and also commenting on the war. Papers, 1811, 1902, and undated, of the Twyman family, include a contemporary handwritten copy of a letter, 29 Jan 1902, written to Davis Twyman (1874–1931), by a man who served with his father, Horace Davis Twyman (1840–1897), in the Civil War. The younger Twyman had written to the man (whose name does not appear on the copy) asking for his recollections of Twyman’s service as captain of Company A, 1st Battalion, Georgia Sharpshooters. Also included are the supplementary source sheet for the Jamestowne Society membership application of Sarah Warner Ferguson Faulconer, which cites the Horace Davis Twyman Bible (a copy of which is on file at the Library of Virginia), and includes a typed copy of the will of William Twyman, 1811.
