Translated by Hooman Rahimi (EN 15038 and ISO 17100 certified translator) Los Angeles Awaiting The Scarlet Stone’s Premier “The Scarlet Stone”, Retelling the Tale of National Identity The Scarlet Stone is the title of a drama that will be brought to stage on August 29th, 2015 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. It is a show that has caught the attention of the Iranian community of art enthusiasts located in Southern California from long ago. Shahrokh Yadegari has adapted the script for The Scarlet Stone based on a poem with the same title by Siavash Kasrai. However, this work of art has gone beyond the distinguished poem of Siavash Kasrai by telling a story as long as the history of Iran itself through an amazing return to the Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, and in the process, adding in a new form to the Iranian art history in diaspora. The Scarlet Stone is an allegory of the emblem given to Tahmineh by Rostam, the Iranian mythological hero, so that if their child was born a girl, she would tie the emblem to their daughter’s hair and to his arm if the child was a boy. In this way, the warrior father could identify his child. Rostam and Sohrab is one of the most importnat stories of the Shahnameh. Alas! Rostam recognizes the scarlet stone tied to the arm of his thriving son too late --- the moment when no elixir is effective against the father’s imposed deep wound on the son’s lifeless body.

Reid ABSTRACT During the interwar period in Iran and Egypt, local and regional manifestation of tajadod/al-jidida (modernity) as a “cultural identity crisis” created the nationalist image and practice of zan-e emrouzi-e shahri/al-mar’a al-jidida al-madani (the urban/secular “New Woman”). The dynamics of the process involved performance art, including the covert medium of journalism and the overt world of the performing arts of music, play, and cinema. The image of the “New Woman” as asl/al-asala (cultural authenticity) connected sonnat/al-sunna (tradition) with the global trends of modernism, linking pre-nineteenth century popular forms of performing arts to new genres, forms, and social experiences of the space of the performing arts.

This article aims to review the rebellion of women in the Ferdowsi's Shahnameh. The research method is descriptive- analytical. The article concludes that human rebellion requires some means and components to justify it. The components widely used in epics include avenge, ambition, and love, each initiating rebellion by men and women. INTRODUCTION Like Iran, the myths of different nations are founded on the struggle between duality of good and evil which result from the rebellion of evil forces and their revolt. The good frontier in this battle grapple with the evil to defeat their revolt. Most thinkers even before Socrates, including Hesiod, saw the world as a battleground between opposing forces; however, this war of foes, according to Hesiod, will end with the victory of Zeus and the dominance of justice over oppression. According to Anaximander, justice regulates the material opposing relations originating from an indefinite state (Gaiman, 2002: 132).

    Iran Cultural Fairs Institute Iran Cultural Fairs Institute was established as a non-governmental institute in 1992. The institute has been commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance to stage a number of cultural events, particularly the landmark annual Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF), provincial book fair and cultural festivals at home and abroad since the past two decades. The ultimate goal in such projects has been to promote and expand book reading. In the following there is a brief review of the institute’s activities: 1) Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF) Tehran International Book Fair is staged in Tehran early in May on an annual basis. The cultural event has turned into a landmark, momentous book fair in Middle East and Asia after 29 editions in a row. Millions of visitors inspect the fair every year, including thousands of university students, scholars, librarians, publishers and families. The event currently serves as the most significant cultural event in Iran. 2) Provincial Book Fairs Provincial book fairs have been staged across the Islamic Republic as a major cultural event with a first such exhibition held in 1993. From the outset, Iran Cultural Fairs Institute took on the mission to stage the events across the country under the auspices of the IRI Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. Some 265 editions of such fairs have already been held in total. The events are held on an annual basis in 30 provincial centers countrywide. 3) Participation in Book Fairs Overseas Iran Cultural Fairs Institute has been representing the landmark Tehran International Book Fair and the Iranian publication industry at several international book fairs in Frankfurt, Bologna, Moscow, Beijing, Tokyo, Sharjah, Istanbul, and Paris among others.

    The Shahname of Firdowsi The Shahname of Firdowsi by Iraj Bashiri copyright, Bashiri 1993, 2003 and 2008 Introduction The conflict between the present-day Uzbeks and their Tajik neighbors that is at times inflamed has a long and multi-faceted history. On the one hand, it is related to the ancient history of the two peoples, when the Turks, arriving in Central Asia from the confines of Mongolia, overthrew Iranian rule, including Tajik rule. And, on the other hand, it is related to the resilience of the Tajik culture and the ability of the Tajiks to retain their authority in spite of the might of the Turkish sultans and amirs. In recent decades, especially after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Turks revived Pan-Turkism, once again denying the Tajiks their identity. In this regard, they often cite Afrasiyab from the epic of Firdowsi, as the eponymous ancestor of the Turks. This claim presents several difficulties. First, both in the ancient Iranian texts and in Firdowsi's Shahname, Afrasiyab is a mythical character. He is not the real-world king that, for instance, al-Tabari would like us to believe.[1] Secondly, within the myth, he is a Turanian who has lost his farr (kingly glory) and seeks to restore it. This means that the Turanians of the Shahname are of Iranian stock. Thirdly, a review of the Orkhon inscriptions and life on the steppe indicates that neither the Turanians nor the Iranians of the Shahname share the öz (real) Turk cultural heritage of which the Turks are proud.

Abu ʾl-Qasim Ferdowsi, the highly revered Persian poet, is one of the literary figures who considered the role of women in his literary masterpiece in spite of the prevailing attitudes towards the women in his era. Some studies, due to the lack of understanding the Ferdowsi’s poems, have claimed that he is a misogynist poet. However, Ferdowsi has equally ranked men and women in his long epic. For example, there are a number of chaste and compassionate mothers in Shahnameh, who play a vital role in shaping the epic character of the heroes.
