Welcome to Stavanger Welcome Congratulations on your assignment and welcome to Norway! Located in the middle of fjord country on Norway’s South-East coast, you will be surrounded by breath-taking scenery and moderate temperatures. Stavanger is not only home to NATO JWC but also a hub for the petroleum industry which makes it not only a cosmopolitan place to live but also a small-town feel considering it is a city in Norway. You are encouraged to get involved in the local community as well as seeing as much of the country as you can. The experience will be what you make it! Your sponsor should have been able to guide you through the process and questions you may have had to get you to this stage. This Pack now provides you with key pieces of personal information which you will require during your stay in Norway and will make a great point of reference for questions you might come across in the upcoming months. The aim of the pack is to help provide a smooth transition into your new life and allow us to help you get off to a good start! As always, should you require further assistance or clarification on any aspect of this pack, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the EJSU Team! Welcome OVERVIEW OF WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM UK EVENTS UK STALL AT JWC INTERNATIONAL DAY- Generally held in January the JWC International Day is held on a Sunday afternoon towards the end of January or early February. Each nation has a stall to represent food, beverages and information from their country. The UK stand is always popular! LEAVERS DINNER – Each year we welcome new personnel and families to the British Community within JWC, and sadly we must say farewell to the people they are replacing. Around May, in honour of the personnel leaving, we like to host a farewell dinner to toast their time in Stavanger and future success! END OF SUMMER BBQ – Summer is the busiest time for new arrivals and what better way to welcome everyone back from Summer holiday) than to have a BBQ. Previously they have been host on base, on the Fjord and at a private boathouse. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY- There are two Remembrance Sunday Services, the first and main service is held at Eiganes Cemetery and a second service at Sola Church. Personnel are to attend, and dependants are encouraged to attend. Historically a lunch followed at the respective community houses but in recent years we have come together as one community and hosted a catered lunch on base. CHRISTMAS OUTING – We aim to get together over the festive period, before JWC winter leave and schools finish up for the year. Previously we have had a private boat trip to Lysefjord to Helleren for a meal and a party night at Sola Strand Hotel. RECYCLING Recycling – Did you know that Norwegians offer a recycling lottery? Norwegians cut the top off a milk carton and fold as many milk and juice cartons as they can and squeeze them into the original and put their surname and phone number on the outside of the original carton. Each week the kommune pick a carton from recycling and offer that person 1000 nok! There is a free service at Sola Recycling Centre where items in good condition can be taken for free and you can also pick up free items. Your time is limited to ten minutes, once per day. Also, if you take an obsolete electronic piece to the dump you get your entry free, you just have to tell the cashier. Large electrical items can be left at the rear/delivery are of any electrical shops and most have recycling bins for batteries, lightbulbs and old mobile phones. The local kommune (council) offers each household one road side collection per year. You book a date online and have the items to be collected on the curb side the evening prior. There is a maximum square footage that will be collected. If you do not have much to be collected, you could share with neighbours and hope that they will return the favour later in the year. Refuse collection schedules can be downloaded from the kommune website. Please note the separate collection for Christmas trees in January.     The Rotary Clubs of Randaberg, Gandsfjord and Sola Invite 12 young people from all over the world to the Summer Camp “Along the North Sea in the Norwegian Oil Capital Stavanger” Dates: August 24 to September 2, 2019 The group: Up to 12 participants, 6 boys and 6 girls, one from each country, between 18 and 22 years of age. Arrival/departure: Stavanger Airport Sola. Participants will be met at the airport and brought back to the airport at departure time by Rotarians. Experience the big sky, the sea, the beaches and the country in the most affluent region in Norway outside Oslo. Stavanger has been the oil capital of Norway since the 1970s. It is also one of the most productive agricultural regions of the country. At the Summer Camp you will be introduced to and discuss different aspects of the region and get hands on experience in the course of ten days. You will meet new people and leave with new friends from many countries. Cost: A fee of 100 Euros will be required upon arrival. Traveling expenses to and from Norway, pocket money, and travel insurance etc. must be covered by participants. Accomodation with host families in the respective Rotary clubs. Insurance: Participants must be insured against illness, accident and third part damages. Language and food: English will be the language of communication throughout the camp. Now it is time to present more details and to invite to subscribe. This restaurant has a great view over the harbour and new operahouse. Leaving Oslo it will be a 4-hour drive (250 kms) to Dalen. Somewhere along the road we will visit at a stave church. The last kilometres are descending 400 metres steep down to Dalen hotel in Dalen, Telemark; this is a big dragon style wooden building, over 100 years old. Friday June 7th, being Day 2, will bring us over the mountains towards Stavanger. Lunch is to be expected at restaurant Øygardstøl, an eagle’s nest on the cliff before descending about 650 metres in 7 km down to Lysebotn. There will be a 2:45 hour ferry ride over Lysefjord. The end of the day will find us at Sola Strand Hotel, near Stavanger. 2 Saturday June 8th, which is Day 3, will be spent in the Stavanger area. We will visit Utstein Kloster, Norway`s only preserved monastery of the medieval ages.

    Sons of Norway Foundation 2015 Annual Report Thank you for your support Working together to benefit grant and scholarship recipients. At the Sons of Norway Foundation we are fortunate to have so many of our Sons of Norway members, lodges and friends come together to support things they care about deeply: Nordic values, education and community outreach. We are pleased to report that our grants in 2015 funded programs that ranged from a Viking ship regatta, to the publishing of immigration stories, to youth days, and to providing lodges with equipment to help sustain their signature events. We also helped 26 students with their college tuition, ensuring participation in cross-cultural programs at the Oslo International Summer School and opportunities for students from Norway to attend institutions here in the United States. We are proud that our members support these valuable educational experiences for our youth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cindy Olson, long time Foundation Director, for her 12 years of service to our members, recipients and overall Nordic Community. We were fortunate to have Cindy’s leadership and wish her well in her retirement. Stepping into her role, we welcome Corrie Maki Knudson, an experienced development professional who is also familiar with fraternal benefit societies. This transition is happening just as we embark on our 50th anniversary of the Foundation in 2016. We now offer this annual report to you, the donors who make our work possible. Tusen takk, Eivind J.
