Math Lesson Plans – 5 th Grade Week: December 7-11

NOTE:Each class will have 1 day of Super Kid’s during Math Block.

Day: 1 Math

MATH: Goal / Objective: 1.02 a-c Develop fluency in adding and subtracting non- negative rational numbers (halves, fourths, eighths; thirds, sixths, twelfths; fifths, tenths, hundredths, thousandths; mixed numbers)

Essential Question: How do I add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators?

Resources/ Materials: Indicators, Classroom strategies, Week by Week Essentials , Investigations and Math text Materials: Fraction wheels, technology, graph paper, manipulatives, paper and pencil

Instructional Strategy: Collaborative Learning Activities, Pair Share, Discussions, Coached Practice, Algorithms, THINK STRATEGY

Teacher Directed: Teacher will introduce how to add fractions with unlike denominators using Indicators- Letter D-p. 11 Independent / Guided Practice: Students will get into groups of three using Math manipulatives to solve word problems involving adding fractions with unlike denominators. One person from each group will select a word problem from the Math Fractions Folder ( Enrichment 10-3) to complete as a group. Each group will complete a total of 6 problems.

Assessment: Teacher observation of group interaction

Homework: Envisions text- WS- Reteach 10-3

Day 2: Math MATH: Goal / Objective: 1.02 a-c Develop fluency in adding and subtracting non- negative rational numbers (halves, fourths, eighths; thirds, sixths, twelfths; fifths, tenths, hundredths, thousandths; mixed numbers)

Essential Question: How do I add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators? Resources/ Materials: Indicators, Classroom strategies, Week by Week Essentials , Investigations and Math text Materials: Fraction wheels, technology, graph paper, manipulatives, paper and pencil

Instructional Strategy: Collaborative Learning Activities, Pair Share, Discussions, Coached Practice, Algorithms, THINK STRATEGY

Teacher Directed: Teacher will introduce how to add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators using Indicators- Letter F-p. 11 Independent / Guided Practice: Students will get into groups of three using Math manipulatives to solve word problems involving adding fractions with unlike denominators. One person from each group will select a word problem from the Math Fractions Folder (Enrichment 10-5) to complete as a group. Each group will complete a total of 6 problems.

Assessment: Teacher observation of group interaction

Homework: Envisions text- WS- Reteach 10-5

Day: 3 Math

MATH: Goal / Objective: 1.02 a-c Develop fluency in adding and subtracting non- negative rational numbers (halves, fourths, eighths; thirds, sixths, twelfths; fifths, tenths, hundredths, thousandths; mixed numbers)

Essential Question: How do I subtract fractions with unlike denominators?

Resources/ Materials: Indicators, Classroom strategies, Week by Week Essentials , Investigations and Math text and DPI released items Materials: Dominoes, technology, graph paper, manipulatives, paper and pencil

Instructional Strategy: Collaborative Learning Activities, Pair Share, Discussions, Coached Practice, Algorithms, THINK STRATEGY

Teacher Directed: Teacher will introduce how to subtract fractions with unlike denominators using Indicators- Letter C-p. 11 Independent / Guided Practice: Students will get into groups of three using Dominoes to solve word problems involving subtracting of fractions with unlike denominators. Group 1: Subtracting with the halves family. Group 2: Subtracting with the thirds family. Group 3: Subtracting with the Fifths family. Groups will rotate between fraction families. Assessment: Teacher observation of group interaction
