Lesson Plans – Biology Week 1, 1st quarter District Standard Utilize the processes of science to develop and perform an investigation (obj code 4130.02). *Analyze and interpret experimental data to formulate general concepts.(obj. code 4130.04) *Communicate scientific understanding using oral language, written language, symbols, tables, graphs, and use appropriate statistical tools (obj. code 4130.05) *Utilize tools safely in processes of experimentation (obj.code 4130.03).

Kansas Standard Content standard a: students should develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry, and understands about scientific inquiry.

Monday August 16 Freshman Only

Tuesday August 17, 2010 Objective: Introduction to the Scientific Method 1) Journal: 2) Go over syllabus 3) Fortune Telling Fish Activity – students will get their fish and begin observations (page 1)

Wednesday/Thursday August 18/19, 2010 Objective: Introduction to the Scientific Method 1) Journal: 2) Review main procedures 3) Take notes over Scientific Method – slides 1-4 4) Fortune Telling Fish Activity – finish page 1 – start page 2 – students will write up their experiment and get it checked by the teacher. Students are finished when they have gotten the procedure and the data table set up.

Monday, August 23, 2010 Objective: Introduction to inferences and observations. 1) Journal: 2) Fish lab is due. 3) Students will work alone to complete Scientific method worksheet – Redi’s experiment. Then we will discuss correct answers as a class. 4) Students will work alone to complete Scientific method worksheet – Can you spot the scientific method. Then we will discuss correct answers as a class. 5) Students will work alone to complete Inference/observation worksheet – The Dinosaur Scene. Then we will discuss correct answers as a class. 6) Hand out study guide for scientific method test.

Tuesday August 24, 2010 Objective: Check for understanding or inferences/observations. 1) Journal: 2) Quantitative and Qualitative observations on meal worms 3) Homework: Qualitative vs. quantitative worksheet
