Nichols Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT This study examines three Black Entertainment Television (BET) shows – The Black Carpet, The Boot and Baldwin Hills – assessing their popularly mediated economic and consumptive representations of Black America in the context of socioeconomic realities being lived in Black America. Using a critical textual analysis of these programs the thesis explores the extent to which consumers are being sold a mediated version of the American dream and Black identity through commodity fetishism, and argues that this symbolic construction has a hegemonic function by deterring the Black consumer’s attention from real to imaginary economic lifestyles. This study finds that, although the three programs differ on their levels of ideological intensity and specific characteristics, on BET as a whole blackness is a fetishized -

I hope all families enjoyed a safe and relaxing holiday. It was wonderful to see so many smiling and eager faces arrive last week, particularly our new Kindergarten students and our new children in Years 1-6. A very special welcome to all our families. Being a parent is a special job. One of the many aspects of parenthood is that you are your child’s first teacher. In joining St Michael’s school community you enter into partnership with your child’s teacher as together you share a common goal—a happy and successful school year for your child. Parents and teachers are partners in helping each child develop to their full potential. I encourage all parents to become involved in the life of the school where at all possible. Teachers welcome helpers in the classroom, sporting events and excursions. Please note at any time you enter school grounds during the day, you need to report to the school office first. You must not go directly to classrooms. A reminder that all parents who wish to assist in any capacity at the school need to have completed the online Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta child protection training and undertaking. -

I shoud’ve done more. COUNSELOR Well, we all need to take it one step at a time. But you keep that up. Anyone else? How about you Jules? Julie looks up and pauses before shaking her head, shy but discontent at the same time. COUNSELOR Hmm okay. Anything interesting during the weekend? JULIE None. TRACE ADKINS Proud To Be Here In the fifteen years since his platinum debut, Trace Adkins has released ten studio albums, three greatest hits packages, and thirty chart singles. He has also racked up four Grammy nominations and five ACM and CMT awards. Accomplishments like that – along with sales in the tens of millions – explain the respect Adkins has earned from Country fans and the industry alike. But there’s more. In recent years, Trace has made his mark as a TV and film actor, a voiceover artist, an author, a social commentator, a participant on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice — and even the inspiration for a series of comic books.
