Poppleton Tigers JFC score twice with major funding grants

Footballers in Poppleton, York, were celebrating today following a £375,000 funding boost for sport in the area.

The Football Foundation – a sports charity funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government (via Sport England) – has contributed £225 000 to the Poppleton Tigers JFC overall grant.

An additional grant of £150,000 has come from The FA, as part of their capital allocation within the Whole Sport Plan agreed with Sport England. This specific aspect of funding has been awarded to support the sustainability of community clubs and create more opportunities to participate in sport within a high quality environment.

This double funding boost will allow Poppleton Tigers JFC, Poppleton Girls and Poppleton Ladies to build a new four-changing room Clubhouse with meeting and training facilities, as well as officials changing rooms, a kitchen and toilets. These improvements will benefit over 300 players and more than 20 teams, who play at Millfield Lane, Nether Poppleton, York.

Val Duggan, Club Secretary at Poppleton JFC, said: “Poppleton JFC are delighted to receive this grant from the Football Foundation. It has taken a lot of hard work over the past two years to reach this position. We would like to thank Gary Limbert and his colleagues at City of York Council, as well as Poppleton Community Trust and the Upper Poppleton & Nether Poppleton Parish Councils for their support and financial assistance. We would also like to thank Paul Butler of Paul Butler Architects Limited for the exciting and imaginative design of the new Clubhouse.”

Gary Limbert, City of York Council, Football Facilities Project Officer, said: Poppleton Tigers JFC have put in a tremendous amount of effort in securing both Football Foundation and other match funding. The new Clubhouse and changing facilities will undoubtedly ensure the continued success of the Club, and will offer a new resource for the benefit of the whole community. The City of York Football Facilities Development Plan is now complete and I would encourage Clubs to come forward and develop their projects, Poppleton Tigers are a good example of what can be achieved. Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation said: “We warmly congratulate Poppleton Tigers JFC and the North Riding County FA for their hard work and dedication in securing this award. This new project in York is the latest example of 180 community sport projects across North Riding worth £15m that the Football Foundation is supporting with money provided by the Premier League, The FA, Government and Sport England.”

Yuri Matischen, Sport England's Champion for Community Sport in Yorkshire, said: “If community sports clubs want to attract and retain participants, they need to be able to offer quality facilities for everyone. That’s why Sport England’s so delighted to be funding the new facilities at Poppleton Tigers Junior Football Club. We know they’ll be welcomed by the club’s 300 regular users, including Poppleton Girls and Ladies, and those who are new to football.”

Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity. Launched in July 2000, the Foundation celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer and has so far supported around 8,000 community sports projects worth £930m.
