Mai, in der die Befreiung des Denkens, der Kampf gegen die feudale Ethik, die Entfaltung des Individualismus und die Befürwortung des romantischen Stils von Schriftstellern in den dreissiger Jahren beschworen wurden, war bestimmt von Friedrich Nietzsches Denken beeinflusst worden. Danach brach der Widerstandskrieg gegen die japanische Aggression aus. In diesem Zeitraum (1937-1945) war ganz China in grosses Unheil geraten. Um die nationale Krise zu beseitigen, war es notwendig, die Massen zusammenzubringen und alle Kräfte zu sammeln. So wurden Nietzsches Ansichten über Individualismus und dessen Stil von der Zeit in den Hintergund gerückt. Innerhalb der nur sehr kurzen Entwicklungsgeschichte des Existentialismus besetzt Nietzsche eine zentrale Position. Über alle drei Grossmeister des Existentialismus – die Deutschen Jaspers und Heidegger sowie den Franzosen Sartre – lässt sich sagen, dass Nietzsche die Quelle ihres Denkens ist. Nietzsches Philosophie ist in der Tat ein schmerzvoller Aufschrei im Angesicht des Schicksals der gesamten Menschheit und des gesamten Zeitalters. Mit diesem Aufschrei bringt er einen tief verankerten Widerstand gegen und eine Kampfansage an die traditionelle Kultur des Westens zum Ausdruck. Von Nietzsche geht eine nach vorn gerichtete Triebkraft aus, seine Philosophie ist durchdrungen von einem aufwärts strebenden Geist. Report Title - p. 3 of 266 Hans-Georg Möller : Chens Arbeit über Nietzsche als tragischen Philosophen stellt den deutschen Denker dem chinesischen Publikum einführend vor. Auf eine kurze Übersicht über Biographie und Werke folgen Darstellungen über einige Leitmotive wie den Tod Gottes, den Übermenschen und den Willen zur Macht. Dabei stützt sich Chen vorwiegend auf englischsprachige Übersetzungen und Sekundärliteratur. Aus der Sicht Chens begehrt Nietzsche gegen den seit dem Altertum in der westlichen Kultur verwurzelten ‚Dualismus’ auf und vertritt eine radikal auf den Menschen bezogene Lebensphilosophie. Nietzsche wird als Erneuerer der westlichen Kultur zum Pendant der geistigen Erneuerer Chinas zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts. Zudem wird er auch als ein Vertreter einer am Menschen orientierten Lebensphilosophie ausgegeben. Über eine solche Lebensphilosophie hoffte man in den 1920er Jahren im Anschluss an die Beweung von 4. Mai traditionelles chinesisches Denken mit neuem westlichen Gedankengut verknüpfen zu können. Auch wird der Optimismus Nietzsches hervorgehoben, der ihn dann doch von den späteren Existentialisten grundsätzlich unterscheiden soll. [Yu1:S. 105-106,Möl11] 1967 Cun zai zhu yi. Le premier recueil sur ce thème de Chen Guying, l'existentialisme a rencontré un succès considérable ; il fut tiré à plusieurs reprises et remis à jour plusieurs fois. [CamA2] 1970 Chen, Guying. Hans-Georg Möller : Chen weist zu Beginn dieser komparatistischen Studie im Einklang mit methodischen Axiomen des historischen Materialismus zunächst ausdrücklich auf die unterschiedlichen sozialen und geschichtlichen Hintergründe der beiden Philosophen hin. Nietzsche wird nun nicht mehr in Bezug auf seine Wirkungsgeschichte vorwiegend als Existentialist verstanden, sondern in Bezug auf seine Zeitbedingtheit als 'Romantiker'. Chen anerkennt dabei Nietzsches zwiespältiges Verhältnis zur Romantik. Er legt seiner Kategorisierung eine mehr oder wenige eigene Definition von ‚Romantik’ zugrunde : Ausdruck innerer Gefühle und angestrebter idealer Welten vermittels einer poetischen, bilderreichen Sprache, Lobpreis der Natur und der Einheit von Mensch und Natur bei gleichzeitiger Kritik einer urbanen Lebensweise und schliesslich : Streben nach individueller Befreiung. [Möl11] 1984-1986 Chen Guying hält einen Vortrag über Nietzsche und Zhuangzi an der Beijing-Universität. Damit setzt eine umfassende Wiederbelebung der Nietzsche-Rezeption ein. Er sagt : Im Herbst 1984 kehrte ich nach 35 Jahren in mein Land zurück. Ich hielt an der Beijing-Universität zum ersten Mal einen Vortrag über die Philosophie von Nietzsche und Zhuangzi. Auf Vorschlag von Professor Tang Zijie an der Fakultät für Philosophie gab ich zugleich an der chinesischen Kulturakademie Vorlesungen über östliche und westliche Philosophie. Seit Herbst 1986 gab ich an der Beijing-Universität Veranstaltungen mit dem Thema Die Philosophien von Nietzsche und Zhuangzi. Es war gerade die Zeit, wo sich auf dem Festland eine Kulturwelle entwickelte. Intellektuelle Kreise begannen begeistert über die Einflüsse der traditionellen Kultur auf das moderne Leben zu sidkutieren, die westlichen Lehren zu erforschung und unterschiedliche geistige Strömungen in umfassender Weise vorzustellen.

Building Fukan as a Chinese Public Sphere: Zhang Dongsun and Learning Light* NUAN GAO Hanover College ABSTRACT This article attempts to explore the relevance of the public sphere, conceptualized by Jürgen Habermas, in the Chinese context. The author focuses on the case of Learning Light (Xuedeng), one of the most reputable fukans, or newspaper supplements, of the May Fourth era (1915–1926), arguing that fukan served a very Habermasian function, in terms of its independence from power intervention and its inclusiveness of incorporating voices across political and social strata. Through examining the leadership of Zhang Dongsun, editor in chief of Learning Light, as well as the public opinions published in this fukan, the author also discovers that, in constructing China’s public sphere, both the left and moderate intellectuals of the May Fourth era used conscious effort and shared the same moral courage, although their roles were quite different: The left was more prominent as passionate and idealist spiritual leaders shining in the center of the historic stage, whereas in comparison, the moderates acted as pragmatic and rational organizers, ensuring a benevolent environment for the stage.

He tried to save the dynasty with a number of modernization projects including bureaucratic, fiscal, judicial, educational, and other reforms, despite playing a key part in the failure of the Hundred Days' Reform. He established the first modern army and a more efficient provincial government in North China in the last years of the Qing dynasty before the abdication of the Xuantong Emperor, the last monarch of the Qing dynasty, in 1912. Through negotiation, he became the first President of the Republic of China in 1912.[1] This army and bureaucratic control were the foundation of his autocratic. He was frustrated in a short-lived attempt to restore hereditary monarchy in China, with himself as the Hongxian Emperor (Chinese: 洪憲皇帝). His death shortly after his abdication led to the fragmentation of the Chinese political system and the end of the Beiyang government as China's central authority. On 16 September 1859, Yuan was born as Yuan Shikai in the village of Zhangying (張營村), Xiangcheng County, Chenzhou Prefecture, Henan, China. The Yuan clan later moved 16 kilometers southeast of Xiangcheng to a hilly area that was easier to defend against bandits. Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.

    The earliest known photographs of the ruins of the European section of the Yuanmingyuan were taken by Ernst Ohlmer in 1873, just 13 years after the looting and destruction of the site. 12 of the original glass negatives were collected for an exhibition at Beijing's China Millennium Monument in 2011. Li 1 - 1 In October 1860, the Second Opium War came to a violent end when British and French forces sacked and destroyed the sumptuous imperial retreat known as the Yuanmingyuan. This was defended at the time as a proper response to the torture and murder by Qing officials of a delegation of foreigners sent to Beijing in the final stages of the conflict. In the imperialistic rhetoric of the time, wantonly destroying one of the greatest treasures and pleasures of the imperial court was justified as a fitting and civilized act by which to punish China and its leaders for their barbaric behavior. The sack of the Garden of Perfect Brightness was thoroughgoing and left no buildings intact. Although scavenging and looting of the site continued for decades thereafter, for all practical purposes the Chinese section was obliterated while the stone and marble palaces and pavilions of the European section survived only as ruins and rubble. Yet the Yuanmingyuan also lived on in two very different, but equally compelling, ways. Despite the rampant trashing of untold treasures that had been housed in this vast complex, many valuable objects of art were taken as plunder and made their way into the great “Oriental” collections of the West, particularly in England and France.

    Chinese Public Diplomacy This book presents the first comprehensive analysis of Confucius Institutes (CIs), situating them as a tool of public diplomacy in the broader context of China’s foreign affairs. The study establishes the concept of public diplomacy as the theoretical framework for analysing CIs. By applying this frame to in- depth case studies of CIs in Europe and Oceania, it provides in-depth knowledge of the structure and organisation of CIs, their activities and audiences, as well as problems, chal- lenges and potentials. In addition to examining CIs as the most prominent and most controversial tool of China’s charm offensive, this book also explains what the structural configuration of these Institutes can tell us about China’s under- standing of and approaches towards public diplomacy. The study demonstrates that, in contrast to their international counterparts, CIs are normally organised as joint ventures between international and Chinese partners in the field of educa- tion or cultural exchange. From this unique setting a more fundamental observa- tion can be made, namely China’s willingness to engage and cooperate with foreigners in the context of public diplomacy. Overall, the author argues that by utilising the current global fascination with Chinese language and culture, the Chinese government has found interested and willing international partners to co- finance the CIs and thus partially fund China’s international charm offensive. This book will be of much interest to students of public diplomacy, Chinese politics, foreign policy and international relations in general.
