British Literature Anglo-Saxon Performing Arts Task

Standards to be assessed ELA12W2: The student demonstrates competence in a variety of genres (expository). ELA12LSV1: The student participates in student-to-teacher, student-to-student, and group verbal interactions.

Task Description: Time Magazine has contracted with Ms. Caldwell and Mrs. Young to publish a special edition created by and for high school students. The issue to be entitled TiMe iCon is devoted to honoring the pioneers and visionaries of our culture. The magazine requests that you create the artwork for the front cover, a compilation CD of iconic songs to accompany the issue, and a commercial to promote sales of the edition.

Direct Instruction for the Whole Class: The whole class will be involved in the following learning experiences: - Reading and analysis of select sections from Beowulf - Review of expository writing techniques & organization - Review of MLA annotated bibliography format and documentation for websites

Group Work: Students will select one group project. Individual Work: In addition to the group work project, each student will complete an individual assignment.

1. Select a person of your choice that you feel deserves a place in Time Magazine’s special edition. Write an expository essay in which you identify the accomplishments and/or accolades of your person. You must also either (a) explain how the person helped shape his/her society and thus your society or (b) explain how the person you’ve selected reflected the values of his/her society. Be sure that you clearly identify those values.

2. Write an annotated bibliography for the 2 resources used to research your icon.
