Teaching Notes

This resource might help when teaching students ‘multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100’.

Select the digits with the mouse (when all the boxes are selected the cursor disappears). Use the right arrow key to move the digits one place value to the right if you are dividing by 10 or 2 place values if you are dividing by 100. If you are multiplying by 10 or 100 you move the digits one or two place values to the left (using the left arrow key).

This is a visual resource for learners to see and appreciate that it is the digits that move and not the decimal point. The position of the decimal point is fixed (between the unit and the tenth place values). I hope this helps.
