Dear Candidate

Rutlish School is a rapidly improving 11-16 boys comprehensive school located in West Wimbledon. GCSE results (including Maths and English) have improved by 75% in the past 3 years. This improvement reflects both the ability of the boys and the outstanding staff we now have in all departments.

Rutlish School is a mixture of old fully refurbished accommodation and a large purpose built state-of the-art teaching block which houses the Art Department.

In collaboration with a neighbouring Girls Secondary School we opened a new Sixth Form in September 2010 which has further enhanced our curriculum offer.

The next few years are set to be both exciting and challenging for the school, and we are looking for new staff to join us who place raising boys’ achievement at the heart of their educational aspirations.

I encourage you to consider taking up our challenge, and look forward to receiving your completed application form, together with a letter in support of your application. We welcome pre-visits for any post, since the students and the staff are our best advertisement. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you would like to arrange a visit.

Yours sincerely

GENERAL INFORMATION ON LOCATION & TEACHING ACCOMMODATION

Rutlish is a popular voluntary controlled boys’ Comprehensive School in the London Borough of Merton. It is an 11-16, eight form entry school with a roll of approximately 1100

The School was founded in 1895 and is situated in a beautiful conservation area, Merton Park, which is an attractive residential suburb of Wimbledon, adjacent to Raynes Park and Morden. The site is open and spacious with large playing fields and a purpose built pavilion. The grounds are next to the impressive and renowned John Innes Park.

The School is on the site of the original John Innes Horticultural Institute and his Manor House houses the school’s administration centre, staff room, and some offices.

Rutlish is well served by road and public transport. Many staff live in the outer suburbs and countryside as well as in the locality. London Transport Tube stations (District and Northern Lines), Tram and British Rail are within easy walking distance. Local bus services are efficient and there is ample car parking space for all teaching and support staff within the grounds.

We have three teaching blocks, with Humanities housed in our Centenary Building (one hundred years of Rutlish School – 1996), Maths, Science and the Learning Resource Centre housed in our Main Building, with the school hall and separate canteen. The new building contains the Sports Hall, ICT suites, Technology, Art, Music, Drama, English and Modern Foreign Languages. Most departments have staff areas equipped with computers, photocopiers, telephones and resource base.

We have a newly refurbished Progress Centre housed in the main teaching block. This is an area which brings together an exciting programme for able students, SEN and support for students with additional languages, and also houses our ten student S and L base.

Our student intake is comprehensive and the great majority of boys are well motivated with strong parental support. Rutlish has a policy of school uniform for all students up to and including Year 11.

The support of parents and ex-students is a strong feature of the school. The Old Rutlishians Association has an excellent purpose built club house with its own large playing fields a short distance from the school. There is a range of extra curricular activities, including provision for sport. All boys are expected to involve themselves in aspects of the enrichment and enhancement programme which is seen as an integral part of their education at Rutlish. The Rutlish Foundation support the school and local community in a wide variety of ways and are represented on our Governing Body. The School has a small but active CCF Unit.

Rutlish is a supportive school in which to work with a motivated teaching and support staff and students with great potential. We encourage all staff to deliver their best, and provide support to both those new to the profession, with an established NQT induction programme and Beginning Teacher programme, as well as those seeking advancement in the profession. Many staff have followed post graduate additional qualifications, with two members of the Senior Team having gained NPQH status 2009 finds the school at a challenging and exciting time in the history of Rutlish; the school is a place of enormous potential and the new initiatives we are currently implementing aim to raise achievement and help the school to attain its rightful position as a place where all students achieve their potential and more!
