FORT WORTH Section (FRONT PAGE, corner colored feature) KITCHEN LESSONS FOR KIDS

By Chris Vaughn -- Star-Telegram Staff Writer

FORT WORTH -- If you've ever grumbled that your children don't know how to help in the kitchen, there's a new place opening for some instruction.

The latest franchise of the Young Chefs Academy opens at 1 p.m. today, giving s preschool to high school kids lessons on all things safe and tasty. There's already an academy in Colleyville.

The classes cover proper food handling, food prep, cooking and baking techniques, table-setting and manners. (Let's hope they have better luck getting the children to wash their hands before touching the food.)

It's really all the stuff your grandmother used to teach, but maybe there aren't enough grandmas anymore.

The place -- 6333 Camp Bowie Blvd, Suite 260 -- is open for birthday parties and special events, even Scout troop meetings.

The head chef is Melissa Weiner, a Paschal High School graduate who taught special education before donning the white chef's hat.

Young Chefs Academy Grand Opening in Fort Worth, Sat., Jan. 19, 1-4 PM 6333 Camp Bowie Blvd

Teaching Young People 3-18 Fun of “Enduring Life Skill: Joy of Cooking, with Safety,” says Forth Worth President and Chief Chef Melissa Weiner of Unique Program

Grand Opening Celebration Open to Public and Media

(Fort Worth, TX)—The hottest craze for kids these days will soon be cooking up success at the new Young Chefs Academy located at 6333 Camp Bowie Blvd. Suite 260, Fort Worth. This new school will hold its grand opening on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at 1-4PM, with President and Chief Chef Melissa Weiner bringing fun back into the kitchen.

Young Chefs Academy is a cooking school designed especially for kids 3-18 years old. The grand opening, with hands-on cooking by youth, will be open to the public and the media at the new facility, which just completed major renovations to be suitable for the YCA.

Weiner is a native of Fort Worth and a Paschal and Texas A&M graduate. She is also a graduate of The Culinary School of Fort Worth. She is a certified teacher and has been working for FWISD for seven years in Special Education and previously for four years in a Florida private school. She says, “By joining my two passions, teaching and cooking, classes and birthdays at YCA Fort Worth will be both educational and FUN.”

“Whether a child becomes a scientist, educator, worker in a factory or business, a mother and wife or husband and father, or any other position, skilled and safe cooking will be critical for quality of life and family happiness.”

Weiner added, “Budding chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, table setting, and manners...and all while having fun!”

Weiner said that Young Chefs Academy has grown from a weekend-only operation, with founders Suzy Nettles (a Fort Worth native, who will attend the Fort Worth opening) and Julie Burleson conducting classes and parties out of small venues, to a quickly growing franchise garnering amazing popularity throughout the country with over 180 cooking schools across 27 states, including Canada.”

The ratio of boys to girls is “about even”, Weiner said; many boys want to become chefs and have as much interest as girls in learning to cook safely and well. Weiner hopes for 200-300 students to participate at the Fort Worth YCA. Young Chefs Academy offers monthly memberships, after-school and weekend cooking classes, home schooling groups with parents, field trips, summer and holiday camps, scout troop meetings, birthday parties, and quality cooking merchandise.
