Mini-Newspaper Project

Mini-newspaper project NAME:______Create your ideal publication (with ALL original work)

Your publication needs to include:  14 or 16 pages  A cover that advertises your top story and visually engages readers. It needs to include all of the information the WSS includes on its cover with your own flag/nameplate design for the title of your publication.  At least one 3PS (three page spread). This is your cover story, and one of the three pages should be a title page. Look at copies of the WSS for examples.  An index or T.O.C. (table of contents).  Special back page design. Back pages are highly visual and not text-heavy, and they often incorporate people and ask readers to play a game. Look at copies of the WSS for examples.  At least one page of opinion, including a staff editorial.  At least two different sections (news, feature, a&e, profiles, sports, opinion, food, health, trends, science and technology, etc.).  At least seven articles. At least four of those need to be source-stories with at least three sources per article. Do NOT interview people in Intro. and be sure to include expert sources and appropriate sources from grades 9-12.  A web supplement or original web content for each person in your group. Be sure to include web teasers in your print publication to advertise this content.

Individual requirements:  Complete your specific job duties for Editor-in-chief, Copy editor, Design editor, Photo editor or Art editor.  Design two pages.  Create at least one web supplement or original web content for wsspaper.com. Any of the following work: o Multimedia photo story o Video o Podcast o Digital media story  Write at least one source story.  Turn in compiled work for each round of deadlines. This is rough work, not a finished design or completed video. It’s a rough draft article, a completed photo or art assignment or compiled audio or video footage. Evaluation: 1. MEETING PUBLICATION AND INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS 2. DESIGN a. Each page has a dominant element, is reader-friendly, lacks trapped white space, is consistent (by-line styles, headline fonts, photo/art credits, sidebar style, text size), is easy to read, is packaged well (it is evident which stories go with which photos/art and the most significant stories are first). 3. CONTENT a. Each source story needs to have three appropriate, diverse sources (one being an expert source). If you are writing a review, column, or editorial - you do not have to have sources; however, you should have research and facts to support your argument. Write your articles in a captivating style with an original angle and engaging lead. 4. GROUP EVALUATIONS o At the end of this project, you will evaluate yourself and your group members. You will receive individual grades based on the amount and quality of work you do.

Suggestions:  Remember, you are in charge of the material on the pages you design, so you need to conference with writers, photographers, artists to make sure their creations go along with your vision for the page.  Include photos whenever possible. Photos should be used over art in news and sports stories, or in addition to art (unless art is the only way to capture something visually, or if art will add more than a photo can).  Include mugshots whenever possible to visually represent the person you’re quoting, but do NOT use mugshots as dominant photos. Get in the habit of taking a mugshot of all your subjects at interviews.
