• BASF is commemorating 75 years of polystyrene with an educational game that serves a good cause

As BASF celebrates the 75th anniversary of the plastic polystyrene, which was manufactured on an industrial scale for the first time and patented by BASF researchers in 1930, the polystyrene experts have devised an Internet game that not only provides information about the use of polystyrene in our daily lives but also serves a good cause: the total points scored in the game determine the amount that BASF will donate to SOS Children’s Villages.

“Not everyone knows how many of the things we use every day are made of polystyrene,” explains Hans-Dieter Schwaben, product manager for polystyrene at BASF. “You can find out simply by playing a game and at the same time, you will be prompting BASF to make a donation.”

The keyboard cursor of a computer moves a little guy wearing a “75 PS” sweatshirt through the supermarket aisles as he fills his shopping cart with all kinds of products. The player is only awarded

points for articles that are made of polystyrene; the points scored BASF Aktiengesellschaft 67056 Ludwigshafen vary depending on how familiar a given polystyrene application is. Phone: +49 621 60-0 http://www.basf.de Communication plastics www.basf.de/plastics Page 2 P 453 e

For every 100 points, BASF will transfer 5 euros into an account of SOS Children’s Villages.

Anyone who has access to the Internet can go via www.basf.de/75yearsPS or click on the blue “75 Years PS” banner at www.basf.de/polystyrol and play the game. The game will be active from October 1 to November 1, 2005 and it is available in German and English. Participants can play and convert their score into euros for donation as often as they want. BASF employees are excluded from participating.
