Associated Teachers TV programme KS3/4 ICT: Online Safety

0001 10:00:14:08 10:00:16:03

(narrator) Recent reports

0002 10:00:16:03 10:00:20:11 have highlighted widespread and often justified concern

0003 10:00:20:11 10:00:22:21 about children's safety online.

0004 10:00:22:21 10:00:27:08

The response to this question explains why.

0005 10:00:27:08 10:00:30:12

While you're on your MSN or you're on your chat

0006 10:00:30:12 10:00:32:07 or you're online after school,

0007 10:00:32:07 10:00:37:09 put your hands up if Mum and Dad watch everything that you're on.

0008 10:00:37:09 10:00:39:09

OK. Put your hands up if you're on there

0009 10:00:39:09 10:00:43:11 and they don't know what you're doing. Be honest. 0010 10:00:45:06 10:00:48:20

(narrator) Many experts working in the area of online safety

0011 10:00:48:20 10:00:52:14 recognise that teachers are in a difficult position.

0012 10:00:52:14 10:00:55:05

There's a very uncomfortable dynamic for teachers.

0013 10:00:55:05 10:00:58:23

It exists because the pupils, particularly the older children,

0014 10:00:58:23 10:01:01:11 know more than them about the technology.

0015 10:01:01:11 10:01:05:09

I speak as a parent, I speak as an adult myself who works with kids.

0016 10:01:05:09 10:01:08:05

It's about having the courage to work collaboratively

0017 10:01:08:05 10:01:11:10 with children and young people to make this something we share.

0018 10:01:11:10 10:01:13:09

It's learning that we do together.

0019 10:01:14:04 10:01:17:08 (narrator) This approach is one schools are learning to adopt.

0020 10:01:17:08 10:01:22:12

Some of the most far-sighted have appointed an e-safety officer,

0021 10:01:22:12 10:01:27:01 charged with teaching safe use of the internet across the curriculum

0022 10:01:27:01 10:01:32:01 and acting as a point of contact for victims of cyberbullying.

0023 10:01:32:01 10:01:36:06

But then I went home and they'd write nasty comments on my pictures

0024 10:01:36:06 10:01:39:00 or just leaving me comments in general,

0025 10:01:39:00 10:01:41:12 just being nasty for no apparent reason.

0026 10:01:41:12 10:01:45:12

And I got really scared because I thought if I told someone

0027 10:01:45:12 10:01:47:08

I'd get bullied even more.

0028 10:01:48:04 10:01:52:19

(narrator) Soon all schools will need to appoint an e-safety officer.

0029 10:01:52:19 10:01:55:21

(man) A one-off lesson on e-safety will not do anybody any good.

0030 10:01:55:21 10:01:59:16

It's got to be part of the curriculum, of everyday school life.

0031 10:02:02:02 10:02:05:13

(narrator) But in the meantime, what can teachers practically do

0032 10:02:05:13 10:02:08:16 to promote safe use of the internet?

0033 10:02:16:20 10:02:19:24

(narrator) We asked ICT consultant Dr Alan Beecham

0034 10:02:19:24 10:02:22:21 to come to Rhodesway Secondary School in Bradford

0035 10:02:22:21 10:02:25:13 to conduct a series of experiments.

0036 10:02:25:13 10:02:29:03

He's working alongside humanities teacher Haroon Gardee

0037 10:02:29:03 10:02:32:16 and year 7 inclusion manager Max Crowther.

0038 10:02:32:16 10:02:36:01 Do you have some experience of the social networking sites?

0039 10:02:36:01 10:02:39:10

No. This is a new thing, really.

0040 10:02:39:10 10:02:41:17

I was born before the technology

0041 10:02:41:17 10:02:46:06 and I'm finding it quite difficult to get my head round it.

0042 10:02:46:06 10:02:48:02

Good to see you. Thanks for coming.

0043 10:02:48:02 10:02:49:22

What we're going to do today is

0044 10:02:49:22 10:02:53:24 look at some social networking stuff and see what you know.

0045 10:02:53:24 10:02:57:21

(narrator) Dr Beecham establishes quickly that almost all the pupils

0046 10:02:57:21 10:03:00:12 are members of social networking sites.

0047 10:03:00:12 10:03:03:04

- (Beecham) Which ones do you use? - (girl) Bebo. Piczo.

0048 10:03:03:04 10:03:05:04 - Piczo. Right, yeah. - Facebook.

0049 10:03:05:04 10:03:07:05

Facebook. You use Facebook.

0050 10:03:07:05 10:03:09:20

Have you got friends that you don't know for real?

0051 10:03:09:20 10:03:11:01

- Yeah. - Yeah?

0052 10:03:11:01 10:03:13:18

How many friends have you got on your site?

0053 10:03:13:18 10:03:16:06

- (boy) 200. - 200. You've got 200.

0054 10:03:16:06 10:03:19:11

Are most of them people you've just met in cyberspace?

0055 10:03:19:11 10:03:22:00

- Yeah. - Yeah, most of them. Yeah?

0056 10:03:22:00 10:03:24:08

OK. So, what we're going to do now, then,

0057 10:03:24:08 10:03:27:11 is we're going to look at a profile. 0058 10:03:28:15 10:03:30:20

- How old is she? - 14.

0059 10:03:30:20 10:03:33:14

(Beecham) 14. What sort of stuff does she like doing?

0060 10:03:33:14 10:03:34:24

Watching TV.

0061 10:03:34:24 10:03:40:23

(narrator) What the students don't know is that the profile is fake.

0062 10:03:40:23 10:03:42:23

(Beecham) That's boring? OK.

0063 10:03:42:23 10:03:45:00

- Would you like to meet her? - No.

0064 10:03:45:00 10:03:47:14

No, not at all. Well, that's really unfortunate,

0065 10:03:47:14 10:03:49:14 because I've brought her along with me.

0066 10:03:49:14 10:03:51:17

Here she is.

0067 10:03:51:17 10:03:53:05

(laughter) 0068 10:03:56:14 10:04:00:17

(narrator) The person behind the profile is not a 14-year-old girl.

0069 10:04:00:17 10:04:02:15

It's one of their teachers.

0070 10:04:02:15 10:04:05:02

(Beecham) So, what's this telling you, then?

0071 10:04:05:02 10:04:06:24

- On Bebo... - It could be anyone.

0072 10:04:06:24 10:04:08:24

(Beecham) It could be anybody. Yeah.

0073 10:04:08:24 10:04:15:01

But before your teacher came in, did you find this reasonably convincing?

0074 10:04:15:01 10:04:17:05

Because she's got the phone numbers there.

0075 10:04:17:05 10:04:20:12

- (Beecham) They look real. - She's got the address.

0076 10:04:20:12 10:04:22:19

I'm surprised that they didn't twig

0077 10:04:22:19 10:04:26:19 that the profile that we made was a made-up one,

0078 10:04:26:19 10:04:30:04 which they obviously didn't, so work to be done.

0079 10:04:30:04 10:04:32:04

(girl) She's got all that evidence.

0080 10:04:32:04 10:04:34:15

(Beecham) We've got evidence on there.

0081 10:04:34:15 10:04:37:01

- I was shocked. - I thought it was a joke.

0082 10:04:37:01 10:04:39:21

I'm disappointed. I expected it to be the girl.

0083 10:04:39:21 10:04:42:11

They would have expected a young student to walk in

0084 10:04:42:11 10:04:45:14 but the fact that it was a teacher was shocking.

0085 10:04:45:14 10:04:48:11

(Beecham) So, what do you think we've learned from this?

0086 10:04:48:11 10:04:51:01

Anyone could just get a picture from the internet, 0087 10:04:51:01 10:04:52:24 put it up and be someone they're not.

0088 10:04:52:24 10:04:56:19

It's about teaching children about safety in the online space

0089 10:04:56:19 10:04:59:09 in the same way as we would in the offline space.

0090 10:04:59:09 10:05:03:10

Don't talk to strangers. Think about the images that you're posting up.

0091 10:05:03:10 10:05:05:17

Understand that this is a digital footprint.

0092 10:05:05:17 10:05:09:15

Is this what you want people to know about you forever?

0093 10:05:09:15 10:05:13:21

Remember, people who tell you who they are might not be who they are.

0094 10:05:13:21 10:05:18:03

She looked young. You know, we knew roughly how old she was.

0095 10:05:18:03 10:05:20:15

Well, she looked it, anyway.

0096 10:05:20:15 10:05:23:01 We believed the stuff that she wrote,

0097 10:05:23:01 10:05:26:08 like releasing her address and stuff.

0098 10:05:26:08 10:05:29:16

What she wrote is what normally 14-year-olds would write.

0099 10:05:29:16 10:05:33:01

You'd think it would be the girl, but actually it was a teacher.

0100 10:05:33:01 10:05:34:21

It could be anyone sat behind there.

0101 10:05:35:24 10:05:39:08

(narrator) In the next experiment, Dr Beecham is interested

0102 10:05:39:08 10:05:43:24 in just how much information pupils are willing to share online.

0103 10:05:43:24 10:05:48:03

What I wanna do is to look at those things you would put on a profile

0104 10:05:48:03 10:05:53:05 and just for you to write down those things that you're happy to use

0105 10:05:53:05 10:05:56:17 and leave off those things that you're not happy to use. 0106 10:05:56:17 10:06:01:05

(narrator) The pupils are supplied with categories of information

0107 10:06:01:05 10:06:04:21 ranging from home telephone number through their hobbies

0108 10:06:04:21 10:06:10:16 to the social network trinity of ASL or age, sex, location.

0109 10:06:10:16 10:06:13:22

You'd put name in it, wouldn't you? You'd put age in it.

0110 10:06:13:22 10:06:17:17

- DOB. - Date of birth, whatever.

0111 10:06:17:17 10:06:21:05

Yeah, but anyone can get your email address and start talking to you

0112 10:06:21:05 10:06:23:24

- and sending you emails. - (girl) You can block emails.

0113 10:06:23:24 10:06:25:24

On MSN you get to know them.

0114 10:06:25:24 10:06:28:08

If you don't like 'em, block 'em and delete 'em.

0115 10:06:28:08 10:06:31:10 - What if they're paedophiles? - You block 'em and delete 'em.

0116 10:06:31:10 10:06:33:03

(boy) How do you know?

0117 10:06:33:03 10:06:36:19

- What about school name? - No, cos they can track you down.

0118 10:06:36:19 10:06:38:17

(narrator) There is some recognition

0119 10:06:38:17 10:06:41:21 that giving away personal information can be dangerous.

0120 10:06:41:21 10:06:44:09

(boy) A photo. Would you put a photo of yourself?

0121 10:06:44:09 10:06:47:06

- No. No. - No, but...

0122 10:06:47:06 10:06:49:22

What if they see you around?

0123 10:06:49:22 10:06:52:13

They can save them and put them on chat phones.

0124 10:06:52:13 10:06:55:03

They might see you around school and stalk you. 0125 10:06:55:03 10:06:59:05

(Beecham) OK, guys. Can you finish off what you're doing at the moment?

0126 10:06:59:05 10:07:02:09

And then can you turn your chairs so you're looking this way?

0127 10:07:02:09 10:07:06:18

Have I got two volunteers from this group to come out and tell me

0128 10:07:06:18 10:07:09:07 about what you've put on here?

0129 10:07:09:07 10:07:12:06

(narrator) The first group were happy to post information

0130 10:07:12:06 10:07:15:02 in 17 of the 19 categories.

0131 10:07:15:02 10:07:19:13

You've put your name on. You're quite happy to put your name on.

0132 10:07:19:13 10:07:22:00

Why would you put your name on? Obvious question.

0133 10:07:22:00 10:07:24:13

Cos you don't want someone calling you "Oi".

0134 10:07:24:13 10:07:29:23

- You'd like 'em to say your name. - So you've put your full name on.

0135 10:07:29:23 10:07:34:14

Your email address. Why would you give them your email address?

0136 10:07:34:14 10:07:36:19

(boy) Because then they can talk to you.

0137 10:07:36:19 10:07:39:17

(Beecham) Well, can't they talk to you through the site?

0138 10:07:39:17 10:07:41:18

They could but it's more...

0139 10:07:41:18 10:07:46:11

It takes time and on MSN it's quicker.

0140 10:07:46:11 10:07:51:19

(Beecham) Right. You've given them your name, your personal email.

0141 10:07:51:19 10:07:54:21

(narrator) The second group is slightly more cautious,

0142 10:07:54:21 10:07:59:19 but will still share information in 15 of the 19 categories.

0143 10:07:59:19 10:08:03:12

Date of birth. Quite happy with that? Yeah? 0144 10:08:03:12 10:08:06:01

For most of you it will be 14,

0145 10:08:06:01 10:08:08:22 and you're happy to reveal that you're 14-year-olds.

0146 10:08:08:22 10:08:10:21

(narrator) Why does this matter?

0147 10:08:10:21 10:08:15:13

Right. Well, in the best interests of "Blue Peter",

0148 10:08:15:13 10:08:18:13 here's one I prepared earlier.

0149 10:08:18:13 10:08:21:00

That's what I'd be prepared to put on.

0150 10:08:21:00 10:08:24:18

I altered "name" to be just my first name.

0151 10:08:24:18 10:08:27:24

And I think you have to be careful even with that.

0152 10:08:27:24 10:08:31:15

I have to give, if I'm going to use a social networking site,

0153 10:08:31:15 10:08:34:04 people something with which they can engage, 0154 10:08:34:04 10:08:39:04 because if I'm looking for friends, then I need to give them something.

0155 10:08:39:04 10:08:41:19

So I'm quite happy to talk generally about telly...

0156 10:08:41:19 10:08:45:11

(narrator) Dr Beecham considers that six categories of information

0157 10:08:45:11 10:08:47:06 are safe to reveal.

0158 10:08:47:06 10:08:49:09

They are first name, hobbies,

0159 10:08:49:09 10:08:53:20 favourite celebrity, TV programme and movie, and favourite quote.

0160 10:08:53:20 10:08:56:23

We are kind of shocked as a group because you don't really think

0161 10:08:56:23 10:09:00:23 about what consequences and stuff would happen.

0162 10:09:00:23 10:09:04:19

We just put what we want to put down but we should think before we write.

0163 10:09:04:19 10:09:07:12 One of the things that worries me slightly

0164 10:09:07:12 10:09:12:09 would be in hobbies, some of you were quite happy to reveal

0165 10:09:12:09 10:09:14:24 that you played for United.

0166 10:09:14:24 10:09:19:23

If somebody was looking, it wouldn't take much work on the internet

0167 10:09:19:23 10:09:23:24 to find out where United under-15s play

0168 10:09:23:24 10:09:25:24 and go and visit the ground.

0169 10:09:25:24 10:09:29:12

If you've also posted your photograph,

0170 10:09:29:12 10:09:31:15 they then can identify you.

0171 10:09:31:15 10:09:35:06

All this seems simple and easy, but it means a lot.

0172 10:09:35:06 10:09:38:09

It shows how cautious you need to be about stuff like this.

0173 10:09:38:09 10:09:42:14 So, are you fairly confident that people looking at your profiles

0174 10:09:42:14 10:09:45:09 are only the people that you've invited to look

0175 10:09:45:09 10:09:49:18 or do you allow anybody to look at your profile?

0176 10:09:49:18 10:09:53:01

- Allow anyone. - You allow anybody. Yeah?

0177 10:09:53:01 10:09:54:08

It's a catch-22.

0178 10:09:54:08 10:09:57:11

If you don't give out information people won't be interested.

0179 10:09:57:11 10:10:00:14

If you give out information, people are interested

0180 10:10:00:14 10:10:03:11 but you're giving out information which is personal.

0181 10:10:03:11 10:10:06:08

So I can understand the dilemma the students face.

0182 10:10:06:08 10:10:10:15

When you go home, are you going to take loads of personal stuff off?

0183 10:10:10:15 10:10:14:01

I'm going to delete the friends that have added me and I've accepted

0184 10:10:14:01 10:10:17:14 and maybe not really get to know them but just delete them.

0185 10:10:17:14 10:10:20:07

The whole concept is they want to be part of this group

0186 10:10:20:07 10:10:22:20 because it's trendy,

0187 10:10:22:20 10:10:26:14 and that's the biggest worry.

0188 10:10:26:14 10:10:31:13

Because of wanting to fit in, wanting to use this technology,

0189 10:10:31:13 10:10:35:07 they are open to far more than when I was a girl.

0190 10:10:35:07 10:10:38:00

You know, this wasn't there.

0191 10:10:38:00 10:10:41:20

(narrator) All the social network sites provide powerful tools

0192 10:10:41:20 10:10:44:10 which restrict the amount of personal information

0193 10:10:44:10 10:10:48:06 that's made available. But the level of knowledge about these tools,

0194 10:10:48:06 10:10:50:17 known as privacy or security settings,

0195 10:10:50:17 10:10:53:09 can be low amongst users.

0196 10:10:53:09 10:10:58:12

Dr Beecham's final experiment is testing how good the knowledge is

0197 10:10:58:12 10:11:00:15 with this group of year 9s.

0198 10:11:00:15 10:11:05:19

If we've got a paper profile like this one...

0199 10:11:05:19 10:11:07:14

And really all this is

0200 10:11:07:14 10:11:13:10 is a printed-out copy of the sort of stuff you were saying was all right.

0201 10:11:13:10 10:11:16:05

Who would you be happy to give that to?

0202 10:11:16:05 10:11:19:23 - (boy) Friends. - Your friends. Right.

0203 10:11:19:23 10:11:23:01

So if I was to take all of these

0204 10:11:23:01 10:11:26:17 and throw them all out of the window...

0205 10:11:30:23 10:11:34:10

How happy would you feel about that?

0206 10:11:34:10 10:11:38:03

There were a few that would because people still walk around school

0207 10:11:38:03 10:11:41:21 and then it'll be on the floor so people can still pick 'em up.

0208 10:11:41:21 10:11:47:16

So we don't think it's a good idea to cast our profile to the wind

0209 10:11:47:16 10:11:50:14 and let everybody look at it.

0210 10:11:50:14 10:11:52:22

So, how can we control that, then?

0211 10:11:52:22 10:11:57:05

Because there are good things about social networking sites.

0212 10:11:57:05 10:12:00:24 We don't want to frighten you to the point of, "I'm not gonna use those."

0213 10:12:00:24 10:12:02:22

There are good reasons for using them.

0214 10:12:02:22 10:12:06:15

But what we need to do is to use them in a safe way.

0215 10:12:06:15 10:12:11:01

So, how do we do that? That's what this next activity's about.

0216 10:12:11:01 10:12:17:14

What we're gonna do is look at three different social networking sites,

0217 10:12:17:14 10:12:22:20 and I'm going to ask you to look at the privacy settings on those sites

0218 10:12:22:20 10:12:24:19 and see if we can change them

0219 10:12:24:19 10:12:29:13 so that the profile would be far more protected. OK?

0220 10:12:29:13 10:12:32:21

Which fields have you actually decided are the important ones

0221 10:12:32:21 10:12:34:19 to block, then? 0222 10:12:34:19 10:12:38:08

The photos, the videos, education, work.

0223 10:12:38:08 10:12:43:01

Right. Because all of those have got information

0224 10:12:43:01 10:12:45:11 which might be able to identify you.

0225 10:12:45:11 10:12:48:18

Right. Which ones are you happy for everybody to have a look at?

0226 10:12:48:18 10:12:52:21

Status, as in if you're single or going out with somebody.

0227 10:12:52:21 10:12:56:02

- And friends. - (Beecham) Right. Friends.

0228 10:12:56:02 10:12:59:22

Friends is a funny one. When you think about friends...

0229 10:12:59:22 10:13:03:02

- What have you said about friends? - Everyone.

0230 10:13:03:02 10:13:06:12

You're quite happy for everybody to know who your friends are? 0231 10:13:06:12 10:13:11:22

- Do you think if somebody could...? - They could hang around the group.

0232 10:13:11:22 10:13:16:13

Yeah. Now, let's say one of your friends isn't as good as you are

0233 10:13:16:13 10:13:22:19 and one of your friends then allows themselves to be identified.

0234 10:13:22:19 10:13:27:15

Could they get at you by looking at who your friends are?

0235 10:13:27:15 10:13:29:15

- Yeah. - Is that possible, do you think?

0236 10:13:29:15 10:13:32:13

So do you think maybe we ought to...?

0237 10:13:32:13 10:13:35:16

- Make it only friends. - (Beecham) I think you're right.

0238 10:13:35:16 10:13:37:18

I think they were naive.

0239 10:13:37:18 10:13:41:09

They were aware of where the tools were and how to use them,

0240 10:13:41:09 10:13:46:10 but maybe weren't aware of the effect of using those tools

0241 10:13:46:10 10:13:50:05 and the fact that really, to be safe, they need to be using them.

0242 10:13:50:05 10:13:53:16

The group down there, what did you try and change?

0243 10:13:53:16 10:13:56:07

The date of birth, and tried to hide the second name.

0244 10:13:56:07 10:13:59:05

- Right. And how easy was it? - It was very easy.

0245 10:13:59:05 10:14:00:05

Very easy.

0246 10:14:00:05 10:14:03:00

After this session that we've had about safety,

0247 10:14:03:00 10:14:07:11

I'm gonna go back, look at my profiles that I've got,

0248 10:14:07:11 10:14:10:07 think twice about what I want and what I don't want

0249 10:14:10:07 10:14:12:02 and then change privacy. 0250 10:14:12:02 10:14:17:05

Hands up if you've looked at your security settings recently

0251 10:14:17:05 10:14:19:00 on your own profile?

0252 10:14:19:00 10:14:20:18

OK.

0253 10:14:20:18 10:14:23:21

Hands up if when you get home tonight

0254 10:14:23:21 10:14:27:23 you'll look at the security settings on your own profile?

0255 10:14:27:23 10:14:29:05

OK.

0256 10:14:29:05 10:14:31:00

You have to take it serious

0257 10:14:31:00 10:14:34:01 cos your date of birth, your school, your photo

0258 10:14:34:01 10:14:38:02 can all be added together and some random person could come find you.

0259 10:14:38:02 10:14:41:14

In terms of all teachers across the country, if they saw this, 0260 10:14:41:14 10:14:43:09 especially ICT teachers,

0261 10:14:43:09 10:14:47:06 they might feel it's not as bad a problem as it is in our school.

0262 10:14:47:06 10:14:50:21

I think what they should do is run the same activities as we have -

0263 10:14:50:21 10:14:53:17 the activities are there, resources are there,

0264 10:14:53:17 10:14:56:17 it doesn't take much to set up - and see what the results are.

0265 10:14:56:17 10:15:00:11

Who thinks their social networking site is going to be more secure

0266 10:15:00:11 10:15:03:18 because of what they've learned today?

0267 10:15:05:09 10:15:08:08

Thanks, guys. That's great. Stay safe.

0268 10:15:10:06 10:15:13:00

(narrator) Online safety has been made a priority

0269 10:15:13:00 10:15:15:18 at Stocksbridge High School in Sheffield.

0270 10:15:15:18 10:15:18:05

It's one of the few schools in the country

0271 10:15:18:05 10:15:20:24 to appoint e-safety officers.

0272 10:15:20:24 10:15:24:00

David Kavanagh is one of two in the team.

0273 10:15:24:00 10:15:26:14

E-safety became a personal concern of mine

0274 10:15:26:14 10:15:29:08 when we were doing a filming unit with the year 9s.

0275 10:15:29:08 10:15:34:12

One of the girls in the class asked if she could go onto her Zorpia site

0276 10:15:34:12 10:15:38:12 and grab a picture so she could have it as the front cover for her movie.

0277 10:15:38:12 10:15:42:17

So I said, "Yes, of course." But the picture turned out to be

0278 10:15:42:17 10:15:45:16 a photo of herself in a party dress 0279 10:15:45:16 10:15:48:08 which left very little to the imagination.

0280 10:15:48:08 10:15:51:11

And I almost fell through the floor

0281 10:15:51:11 10:15:54:06 and I thought, "I need to do something about this."

0282 10:15:54:06 10:15:57:15

Janine Walker, the school's other e-safety officer,

0283 10:15:57:15 10:16:00:12 runs regular assemblies on the subject.

0284 10:16:00:12 10:16:05:00

Morning, year 7s. Put your hands up if you have the internet at home.

0285 10:16:05:00 10:16:10:12

So, this morning what I want to talk to you about is e-safety

0286 10:16:10:12 10:16:13:20 and how to be safe online.

0287 10:16:13:20 10:16:18:17

I want you to watch very carefully and see what message this gives out.

0288 10:16:24:10 10:16:26:14 (narrator) The year 7s watch a video

0289 10:16:26:14 10:16:29:05 by the Child Exploitation Online Protection group,

0290 10:16:29:05 10:16:33:21 showing how a young boy could be trapped online.

0291 10:16:33:21 10:16:38:02

He's a keen footballer and a social network user praises his skills

0292 10:16:38:02 10:16:41:06 after he posts a video online.

0293 10:16:46:03 10:16:48:10

The boy's invited to come training.

0294 10:16:50:10 10:16:54:17

But the person he meets is not who he was expecting.

0295 10:16:58:10 10:17:02:07

It's a classic tactic of paedophiles.

0296 10:17:02:07 10:17:06:00

I don't think the students understand

0297 10:17:06:00 10:17:08:18 how little they actually do know,

0298 10:17:08:18 10:17:11:10 and you see them when they've watched the video back

0299 10:17:11:10 10:17:14:03 or they've listened to the speech or the assembly...

0300 10:17:14:03 10:17:16:04

You can hear a pin drop.

0301 10:17:17:10 10:17:23:02

OK. Put your hand up if you've learned something from those videos,

0302 10:17:23:02 10:17:27:09 if you can take something away from two videos that you've just watched

0303 10:17:27:09 10:17:30:08 and make yourself a bit safer at home and on the internet.

0304 10:17:30:08 10:17:33:09

I'd like you to think back to yesterday's assembly.

0305 10:17:33:09 10:17:36:14

We had a really good presentation about internet safety.

0306 10:17:36:14 10:17:39:00

I'd like you to think about what you saw

0307 10:17:39:00 10:17:41:15 and I'd like you to design some posters,

0308 10:17:41:15 10:17:45:07 not for yourselves, cos I think you should have understood the message,

0309 10:17:45:07 10:17:47:08 but for year 6s to look at

0310 10:17:47:08 10:17:51:09 to help them understand how they can be safe on the internet.

0311 10:17:51:09 10:17:53:09

We never run anything in isolation.

0312 10:17:53:09 10:17:56:11

We never just run a themed assembly and that is it.

0313 10:17:56:11 10:18:00:00

It is always complemented and followed on with worksheets,

0314 10:18:00:00 10:18:02:09 with information sheets, with evaluations.

0315 10:18:02:09 10:18:04:21

(narrator) That's the secret to getting it right

0316 10:18:04:21 10:18:09:06 according to the leading agency promoting children's safety online.

0317 10:18:09:06 10:18:12:08 A one-off lesson on e-safety will not do anybody any good,

0318 10:18:12:08 10:18:19:01 in the same way that you can have a one-off lesson on road safety.

0319 10:18:19:01 10:18:24:00

Children will take it in and they'll forget about it within half an hour.

0320 10:18:24:00 10:18:27:13

It needs to run through all lessons, so it doesn't always need to be

0321 10:18:27:13 10:18:31:22 a stand-alone lesson within the PHSE curricula.

0322 10:18:31:22 10:18:35:18

It's about having that thread of e-safety throughout all lessons.

0323 10:18:35:18 10:18:40:16

(narrator) The "stay safe online" message is promoted in PHSE lessons.

0324 10:18:40:16 10:18:43:11

And what we're going to be having a look at next

0325 10:18:43:11 10:18:45:08 is a website called thinkuknow.

0326 10:18:45:08 10:18:48:08

It's got lots of information that you can use

0327 10:18:48:08 10:18:50:16 about how to keep yourself safe,

0328 10:18:50:16 10:18:53:20 about the different chat sites, different messaging,

0329 10:18:53:20 10:18:58:18 and there are also some games on there that can help teach you.

0330 10:18:58:18 10:19:01:11

So type that into the address bar at the top

0331 10:19:01:11 10:19:04:24 and have a look around the site for yourselves.

0332 10:19:04:24 10:19:10:15

I found assembly useful because at first I didn't know

0333 10:19:10:15 10:19:14:14 that there were so many people what went after boys as well as girls.

0334 10:19:14:14 10:19:17:08

When you're playing multiplayer games on the internet

0335 10:19:17:09 10:19:21:10 you've got to be just as safe as when you're using chat rooms. 0336 10:19:21:10 10:19:24:00

You can talk to each other when you're playing games

0337 10:19:24:00 10:19:26:15 and still you don't know who each other are, do you?

0338 10:19:26:15 10:19:30:03

(narrator) The school has a safe use of the internet policy.

0339 10:19:30:03 10:19:32:14

Rules are posted on the classroom walls

0340 10:19:32:14 10:19:35:18 and pupils are reminded of them when using the internet.

0341 10:19:35:18 10:19:39:07

Today the pupils are online as part of a science lesson.

0342 10:19:39:07 10:19:43:13

I want you to think about the normal rules that we need to follow

0343 10:19:43:13 10:19:47:08 when we're using the laptops and when we're using the internet.

0344 10:19:47:08 10:19:49:20

We have the rules that are in all of the rooms.

0345 10:19:49:20 10:19:51:21 They're also in your planners.

0346 10:19:51:21 10:19:55:06

But let me just remind you about what you need to do this morning.

0347 10:19:55:06 10:20:00:09

For nearly all of the questions, I've directed you to a website.

0348 10:20:00:09 10:20:03:15

So that's the website that you should be using.

0349 10:20:03:15 10:20:08:14

Using ICT in a lesson other than ICT brings particular challenges,

0350 10:20:08:14 10:20:10:10 but it's such a useful tool

0351 10:20:10:10 10:20:15:07 that the time you spend looking through the websites

0352 10:20:15:07 10:20:17:04 and making sure they're safe

0353 10:20:17:04 10:20:19:22 and making sure they're accessible to the students

0354 10:20:19:22 10:20:21:18 is usually time well spent.

0355 10:20:21:18 10:20:26:02 For some of the questions, you may need to search.

0356 10:20:26:02 10:20:32:08

If you do need to search, you need to search for appropriate websites.

0357 10:20:32:08 10:20:36:18

(Janine) I think the challenge I face about being an e-safety officer

0358 10:20:36:18 10:20:39:10 is staff really responding to change.

0359 10:20:39:10 10:20:42:21

It's something new, and it's breaking it down

0360 10:20:42:21 10:20:46:02 so that everybody has a really basic understanding

0361 10:20:46:02 10:20:49:20 of risks associated with online technology.

0362 10:20:49:20 10:20:52:14

(narrator) New staff or teachers in training

0363 10:20:52:14 10:20:56:07 are briefed on the school's safe use of the internet policy.

0364 10:20:56:07 10:20:58:07 You probably noticed in each classroom

0365 10:20:58:07 10:21:01:12 there's a "Responsible Use of the Internet Within the School".

0366 10:21:01:12 10:21:04:01

This is a policy that I wrote up.

0367 10:21:04:01 10:21:08:07

It's just a list of do's and don'ts for each classroom.

0368 10:21:08:07 10:21:10:10

So if they'd received an email, then,

0369 10:21:10:10 10:21:12:19 when they'd come in to do some work,

0370 10:21:12:19 10:21:15:18 it seemed like they were being bullied and they were upset

0371 10:21:15:18 10:21:18:06 and they came to you in a lesson, who would you...?

0372 10:21:18:06 10:21:22:08

Immediately see me and I would make a note of the student,

0373 10:21:22:08 10:21:25:07 when it happened, who it was by, who sent it, 0374 10:21:25:07 10:21:27:06 and then I'd send you to Janine.

0375 10:21:27:06 10:21:31:05

(narrator) And the e-safety officers also act as a point of contact

0376 10:21:31:05 10:21:34:15 for pupils who may have suffered from bullying online.

0377 10:21:34:15 10:21:37:02

- How are things? - I'm feeling a lot better

0378 10:21:37:02 10:21:39:16 because I know now it's all been sorted,

0379 10:21:39:16 10:21:42:14 and I enjoy coming back to school,

0380 10:21:42:14 10:21:44:10 cos I didn't at one point.

0381 10:21:44:10 10:21:48:02

It happened three months ago. It started with name-calling at school

0382 10:21:48:02 10:21:50:14 and outside school they were banging into me

0383 10:21:50:14 10:21:52:17 and saying that I did this to someone, 0384 10:21:52:17 10:21:55:01 that I called someone names and stuff.

0385 10:21:55:01 10:21:57:09

But then I went home and went on my website

0386 10:21:57:09 10:22:00:06 and they'd leave nasty comments on my pictures

0387 10:22:00:06 10:22:02:22 or just leaving me comments in general,

0388 10:22:02:22 10:22:05:02 just being nasty for no apparent reason.

0389 10:22:05:02 10:22:09:06

And I got really scared because I thought if I told someone

0390 10:22:09:06 10:22:12:22

I'd get bullied even more or I'd get beat up or something.

0391 10:22:12:22 10:22:16:11

How long did you sit at home not telling anybody?

0392 10:22:16:11 10:22:18:00

Ages, and I mean ages.

0393 10:22:18:00 10:22:20:05 What made you come and let somebody know?

0394 10:22:20:05 10:22:24:01

I knew I'd done everything I can do, my mum did everything she could do

0395 10:22:24:01 10:22:26:04 and there needed to be something else.

0396 10:22:26:04 10:22:30:17

I knew at this school, I watched clips on cyberbullying.

0397 10:22:30:17 10:22:34:01

It really took it home to me because that's what's happening to me

0398 10:22:34:01 10:22:36:11 and I shouldn't have to stand for it.

0399 10:22:36:11 10:22:39:06

We got told about people we can go to.

0400 10:22:39:06 10:22:43:20

One person was called Miss Walker and she was head of bullying policy,

0401 10:22:43:20 10:22:46:14 and one was my head of year, Mrs Thornton.

0402 10:22:46:14 10:22:50:07 I went to both of them and just sat them down and just talked to them

0403 10:22:50:07 10:22:53:01 and then they started giving me options what to do.

0404 10:22:53:01 10:22:55:19

If I didn't like it I would say, "I don't wanna do that,"

0405 10:22:55:19 10:22:58:20 and they totally understood. Then they did it with me.

0406 10:22:58:20 10:23:02:07

I did what I wanted to do and they just backed me up 100%.

0407 10:23:02:07 10:23:06:01

(narrator) But much of children's online lives are led at home

0408 10:23:06:01 10:23:07:15 or away from school.

0409 10:23:07:15 10:23:10:12

Stocksbridge High School's e-safety team

0410 10:23:10:12 10:23:14:16 recognise that part of their job is to educate parents.

0411 10:23:14:16 10:23:17:13

Some of the information that I'm going to give you tonight 0412 10:23:17:13 10:23:19:21 might be a little bit gut-wrenching.

0413 10:23:19:21 10:23:23:20

It's reality. It's real. It's out there. It's happening.

0414 10:23:23:20 10:23:27:01

I believe in telling everybody exactly what's out there

0415 10:23:27:01 10:23:28:21 and tell it how it should be told.

0416 10:23:28:21 10:23:31:00

It's no good fleeting round all the army.

0417 10:23:31:00 10:23:33:21

We've got to go straight down the middle and approach it.

0418 10:23:33:21 10:23:36:04

I hope you take something away from tonight

0419 10:23:36:04 10:23:40:00 and I hope it makes you a little bit more knowledgeable as parents

0420 10:23:40:00 10:23:41:20 to protect your children.

0421 10:23:41:20 10:23:43:21

We have a parents' information evening

0422 10:23:43:21 10:23:46:15 to make parents more aware. That's part of the problem.

0423 10:23:46:15 10:23:49:12

We can make the child as safe as anything in school

0424 10:23:49:12 10:23:52:19 using firewalls, using any filtering systems that we have.

0425 10:23:52:19 10:23:56:10

It's when they get home that's the big danger. So we inform parents

0426 10:23:56:10 10:23:59:13 with hints and tips as to how they can make their children safer

0427 10:23:59:13 10:24:02:02 and to make them aware, initially, also,

0428 10:24:02:02 10:24:05:07 and then to give them strategies

0429 10:24:05:07 10:24:08:05 they can employ to make their computer safe at home.

0430 10:24:08:05 10:24:13:20

OK. Our Child Exploitation and Online Protection police squad 0431 10:24:13:20 10:24:18:02 did a strategic overview in 2007

0432 10:24:18:02 10:24:21:17 and found that one in four children that they surveyed

0433 10:24:21:17 10:24:24:15 had met up with an online stranger.

0434 10:24:24:15 10:24:27:20

OK. I don't want you to panic.

0435 10:24:27:20 10:24:31:12

I don't want you to go home tonight and cut up the internet wire.

0436 10:24:31:12 10:24:34:15

I don't want you to go and say:

0437 10:24:34:15 10:24:37:04

"I'm logging us off. None of us are using it."

0438 10:24:37:04 10:24:41:07

It's a fantastic resource. It's just to make you more knowledgeable

0439 10:24:41:07 10:24:43:20 that these risks are out there.

0440 10:24:43:20 10:24:48:02

To be honest, it's a surprise, because I work in IT,

0441 10:24:48:02 10:24:49:23 and quite leading-edge IT

0442 10:24:49:23 10:24:53:00 in communication and using the internet,

0443 10:24:53:00 10:24:57:00 and I'm a very, very attentive

0444 10:24:57:00 10:25:00:09 and concerned and responsible parent of three young children

0445 10:25:00:09 10:25:01:19 and so is my wife,

0446 10:25:01:19 10:25:06:24 so if I'm so clued up and so embroiled in all of that,

0447 10:25:06:24 10:25:12:23 how can I be so unaware of the risks that my children are in,

0448 10:25:12:23 10:25:16:23 and even not appreciating how well the school is handling it as well?

0449 10:25:16:23 10:25:19:07

So I'm really pleased that I came along,

0450 10:25:19:07 10:25:25:04 really relieved that the school is ahead at this stage, 0451 10:25:25:04 10:25:27:16 and really I just hope

0452 10:25:27:16 10:25:31:11 that more schools get clued up into the same kind of programme.

0453 10:25:31:11 10:25:34:09

When it comes to these new digital waters,

0454 10:25:34:09 10:25:37:01 if a child falls into an area of the water

0455 10:25:37:01 10:25:40:20 that we maybe are not around to help pull them out at the time,

0456 10:25:40:20 10:25:43:15 let's make sure we teach them how to swim.

0457 10:25:43:15 10:25:45:17

And that's what e-safety is about.

0458 10:25:45:17 10:25:49:01

It's about a combination of proper, appropriate safety measures

0459 10:25:49:01 10:25:52:05 that fit the age and stage of development of the child,

0460 10:25:52:05 10:25:55:08 but also that that child themselves can swim,

0461 10:25:55:08 10:26:01:12 that if something really bad happens, they're not going to drown.

0462 10:26:01:12 10:26:05:11

(narrator) To help teachers with the complex area of safety online,

0463 10:26:05:11 10:26:08:09 the Child Exploitation and Online Protection group

0464 10:26:08:09 10:26:11:07 has produced a number of useful resources.

0465 10:26:11:07 10:26:15:00

The teachers' resources we've developed with teachers themselves,

0466 10:26:15:00 10:26:18:10 so the lesson plans that go alongside the resources

0467 10:26:18:10 10:26:21:07 that you can access through training or by downloading

0468 10:26:21:07 10:26:23:22 have been developed in conjunction with teachers.

0469 10:26:23:22 10:26:25:22

So they should work in the classroom 0470 10:26:25:22 10:26:30:12 and they should help you deliver the objectives you're trying to deliver.

0471 10:26:30:12 10:26:31:24

It's an important point.

0472 10:26:31:24 10:26:35:12

This is not about law enforcement saying, "This is right and wrong."

0473 10:26:35:12 10:26:39:02

This is about us collaborating with young people and with teachers

0474 10:26:39:02 10:26:41:12 to develop something that works for them.

0475 10:26:41:12 10:26:46:08

(narrator) Find links to the CEOP's resources and other useful sites
