Put your hands up if you're on there</p><p>0009 10:00:39:09 10:00:43:11 and they don't know what you're doing. Be honest. 0010 10:00:45:06 10:00:48:20</p><p>(narrator) Many experts working in the area of online safety</p><p>0011 10:00:48:20 10:00:52:14 recognise that teachers are in a difficult position.</p><p>0012 10:00:52:14 10:00:55:05</p><p>There's a very uncomfortable dynamic for teachers.</p><p>0013 10:00:55:05 10:00:58:23</p><p>It exists because the pupils, particularly the older children,</p><p>0014 10:00:58:23 10:01:01:11 know more than them about the technology.</p><p>0015 10:01:01:11 10:01:05:09</p><p>I speak as a parent, I speak as an adult myself who works with kids.</p><p>0016 10:01:05:09 10:01:08:05</p><p>It's about having the courage to work collaboratively</p><p>0017 10:01:08:05 10:01:11:10 with children and young people to make this something we share.</p><p>0018 10:01:11:10 10:01:13:09</p><p>It's learning that we do together.</p><p>0019 10:01:14:04 10:01:17:08 (narrator) This approach is one schools are learning to adopt.</p><p>0020 10:01:17:08 10:01:22:12</p><p>Some of the most far-sighted have appointed an e-safety officer,</p><p>0021 10:01:22:12 10:01:27:01 charged with teaching safe use of the internet across the curriculum</p><p>0022 10:01:27:01 10:01:32:01 and acting as a point of contact for victims of cyberbullying.</p><p>0023 10:01:32:01 10:01:36:06</p><p>But then I went home and they'd write nasty comments on my pictures</p><p>0024 10:01:36:06 10:01:39:00 or just leaving me comments in general,</p><p>0025 10:01:39:00 10:01:41:12 just being nasty for no apparent reason.</p><p>0026 10:01:41:12 10:01:45:12</p><p>And I got really scared because I thought if I told someone</p><p>0027 10:01:45:12 10:01:47:08</p><p>I'd get bullied even more.</p><p>0028 10:01:48:04 10:01:52:19</p><p>(narrator) Soon all schools will need to appoint an e-safety officer.</p><p>0029 10:01:52:19 10:01:55:21</p><p>(man) A one-off lesson on e-safety will not do anybody any good.</p><p>0030 10:01:55:21 10:01:59:16</p><p>It's got to be part of the curriculum, of everyday school life.</p><p>0031 10:02:02:02 10:02:05:13</p><p>(narrator) But in the meantime, what can teachers practically do</p><p>0032 10:02:05:13 10:02:08:16 to promote safe use of the internet?</p><p>0033 10:02:16:20 10:02:19:24</p><p>(narrator) We asked ICT consultant Dr Alan Beecham</p><p>0034 10:02:19:24 10:02:22:21 to come to Rhodesway Secondary School in Bradford</p><p>0035 10:02:22:21 10:02:25:13 to conduct a series of experiments.</p><p>0036 10:02:25:13 10:02:29:03</p><p>He's working alongside humanities teacher Haroon Gardee</p><p>0037 10:02:29:03 10:02:32:16 and year 7 inclusion manager Max Crowther.</p><p>0038 10:02:32:16 10:02:36:01 Do you have some experience of the social networking sites?</p><p>0039 10:02:36:01 10:02:39:10</p><p>No. This is a new thing, really.</p><p>0040 10:02:39:10 10:02:41:17</p><p>I was born before the technology</p><p>0041 10:02:41:17 10:02:46:06 and I'm finding it quite difficult to get my head round it.</p><p>0042 10:02:46:06 10:02:48:02</p><p>Good to see you. I expected it to be the girl.</p><p>0083 10:04:39:21 10:04:42:11</p><p>They would have expected a young student to walk in</p><p>0084 10:04:42:11 10:04:45:14 but the fact that it was a teacher was shocking.</p><p>0085 10:04:45:14 10:04:48:11</p><p>(Beecham) So, what do you think we've learned from this?</p><p>0086 10:04:48:11 10:04:51:01</p><p>Anyone could just get a picture from the internet, 0087 10:04:51:01 10:04:52:24 put it up and be someone they're not.</p><p>0088 10:04:52:24 10:04:56:19</p><p>It's about teaching children about safety in the online space</p><p>0089 10:04:56:19 10:04:59:09 in the same way as we would in the offline space.</p><p>0090 10:04:59:09 10:05:03:10</p><p>Don't talk to strangers. Think about the images that you're posting up.</p><p>0091 10:05:03:10 10:05:05:17</p><p>Understand that this is a digital footprint.</p><p>0092 10:05:05:17 10:05:09:15</p><p>Is this what you want people to know about you forever?</p><p>0093 10:05:09:15 10:05:13:21</p><p>Remember, people who tell you who they are might not be who they are.</p><p>0094 10:05:13:21 10:05:18:03</p><p>She looked young. You know, we knew roughly how old she was.</p><p>0095 10:05:18:03 10:05:20:15</p><p>Well, she looked it, anyway.</p><p>0096 10:05:20:15 10:05:23:01 We believed the stuff that she wrote,</p><p>0097 10:05:23:01 10:05:26:08 like releasing her address and stuff.</p><p>0098 10:05:26:08 10:05:29:16</p><p>What she wrote is what normally 14-year-olds would write.</p><p>0099 10:05:29:16 10:05:33:01</p><p>You'd think it would be the girl, but actually it was a teacher.</p><p>0100 10:05:33:01 10:05:34:21</p><p>It could be anyone sat behind there.</p><p>0101 10:05:35:24 10:05:39:08</p><p>(narrator) In the next experiment, Dr Beecham is interested</p><p>0102 10:05:39:08 10:05:43:24 in just how much information pupils are willing to share online.</p><p>0103 10:05:43:24 10:05:48:03</p><p>What I wanna do is to look at those things you would put on a profile</p><p>0104 10:05:48:03 10:05:53:05 and just for you to write down those things that you're happy to use</p><p>0105 10:05:53:05 10:05:56:17 and leave off those things that you're not happy to use. 0106 10:05:56:17 10:06:01:05</p><p>(narrator) The pupils are supplied with categories of information</p><p>0107 10:06:01:05 10:06:04:21 ranging from home telephone number through their hobbies</p><p>0108 10:06:04:21 10:06:10:16 to the social network trinity of ASL or age, sex, location.</p><p>0109 10:06:10:16 10:06:13:22</p><p>You'd put name in it, wouldn't you? You'd put age in it.</p><p>0110 10:06:13:22 10:06:17:17</p><p>- DOB. - Date of birth, whatever.</p><p>0111 10:06:17:17 10:06:21:05</p><p>Yeah, but anyone can get your email address and start talking to you</p><p>0112 10:06:21:05 10:06:23:24</p><p>- and sending you emails. - (girl) You can block emails.</p><p>0113 10:06:23:24 10:06:25:24</p><p>On MSN you get to know them.</p><p>0114 10:06:25:24 10:06:28:08</p><p>If you don't like 'em, block 'em and delete 'em.</p><p>0115 10:06:28:08 10:06:31:10 - What if they're paedophiles? - You block 'em and delete 'em.</p><p>0116 10:06:31:10 10:06:33:03</p><p>(boy) How do you know?</p><p>0117 10:06:33:03 10:06:36:19</p><p>- What about school name? - No, cos they can track you down.</p><p>0118 10:06:36:19 10:06:38:17</p><p>(narrator) There is some recognition</p><p>0119 10:06:38:17 10:06:41:21 that giving away personal information can be dangerous.</p><p>0120 10:06:41:21 10:06:44:09</p><p>(boy) A photo. Would you put a photo of yourself?</p><p>0121 10:06:44:09 10:06:47:06</p><p>- No. No. - No, but...</p><p>0122 10:06:47:06 10:06:49:22</p><p>What if they see you around?</p><p>0123 10:06:49:22 10:06:52:13</p><p>They can save them and put them on chat phones.</p><p>0124 10:06:52:13 10:06:55:03</p><p>They might see you around school and stalk you. 0125 10:06:55:03 10:06:59:05</p><p>(Beecham) OK, guys. Quite happy with that? Yeah? 0144 10:08:03:12 10:08:06:01</p><p>For most of you it will be 14,</p><p>0145 10:08:06:01 10:08:08:22 and you're happy to reveal that you're 14-year-olds.</p><p>0146 10:08:08:22 10:08:10:21</p><p>(narrator) Why does this matter?</p><p>0147 10:08:10:21 10:08:15:13</p><p>Right. Well, in the best interests of "Blue Peter",</p><p>0148 10:08:15:13 10:08:18:13 here's one I prepared earlier.</p><p>0149 10:08:18:13 10:08:21:00</p><p>That's what I'd be prepared to put on.</p><p>0150 10:08:21:00 10:08:24:18</p><p>I altered "name" to be just my first name.</p><p>0151 10:08:24:18 10:08:27:24</p><p>And I think you have to be careful even with that.</p><p>0152 10:08:27:24 10:08:31:15</p><p>I have to give, if I'm going to use a social networking site,</p><p>0153 10:08:31:15 10:08:34:04 people something with which they can engage, 0154 10:08:34:04 10:08:39:04 because if I'm looking for friends, then I need to give them something.</p><p>0155 10:08:39:04 10:08:41:19</p><p>So I'm quite happy to talk generally about telly...</p><p>0156 10:08:41:19 10:08:45:11</p><p>(narrator) Dr Beecham considers that six categories of information</p><p>0157 10:08:45:11 10:08:47:06 are safe to reveal.</p><p>0158 10:08:47:06 10:08:49:09</p><p>They are first name, hobbies,</p><p>0159 10:08:49:09 10:08:53:20 favourite celebrity, TV programme and movie, and favourite quote.</p><p>0160 10:08:53:20 10:08:56:23</p><p>We are kind of shocked as a group because you don't really think</p><p>0161 10:08:56:23 10:09:00:23 about what consequences and stuff would happen.</p><p>0162 10:09:00:23 10:09:04:19</p><p>We just put what we want to put down but we should think before we write.</p><p>0163 10:09:04:19 10:09:07:12 One of the things that worries me slightly</p><p>0164 10:09:07:12 10:09:12:09 would be in hobbies, some of you were quite happy to reveal</p><p>0165 10:09:12:09 10:09:14:24 that you played for United.</p><p>0166 10:09:14:24 10:09:19:23</p><p>If somebody was looking, it wouldn't take much work on the internet</p><p>0167 10:09:19:23 10:09:23:24 to find out where United under-15s play</p><p>0168 10:09:23:24 10:09:25:24 and go and visit the ground.</p><p>0169 10:09:25:24 10:09:29:12</p><p>If you've also posted your photograph,</p><p>0170 10:09:29:12 10:09:31:15 they then can identify you.</p><p>0171 10:09:31:15 10:09:35:06</p><p>All this seems simple and easy, but it means a lot.</p><p>0172 10:09:35:06 10:09:38:09</p><p>It shows how cautious you need to be about stuff like this.</p><p>0173 10:09:38:09 10:09:42:14 So, are you fairly confident that people looking at your profiles</p><p>0174 10:09:42:14 10:09:45:09 are only the people that you've invited to look</p><p>0175 10:09:45:09 10:09:49:18 or do you allow anybody to look at your profile?</p><p>0176 10:09:49:18 10:09:53:01</p><p>- Allow anyone. - You allow anybody. Yeah?</p><p>0177 10:09:53:01 10:09:54:08</p><p>It's a catch-22.</p><p>0178 10:09:54:08 10:09:57:11</p><p>If you don't give out information people won't be interested.</p><p>0179 10:09:57:11 10:10:00:14</p><p>If you give out information, people are interested</p><p>0180 10:10:00:14 10:10:03:11 but you're giving out information which is personal.</p><p>0181 10:10:03:11 10:10:06:08</p><p>So I can understand the dilemma the students face.</p><p>0182 10:10:06:08 10:10:10:15</p><p>When you go home, are you going to take loads of personal stuff off?</p><p>0183 10:10:10:15 10:10:14:01</p><p>I'm going to delete the friends that have added me and I've accepted</p><p>0184 10:10:14:01 10:10:17:14 and maybe not really get to know them but just delete them.</p><p>0185 10:10:17:14 10:10:20:07</p><p>The whole concept is they want to be part of this group</p><p>0186 10:10:20:07 10:10:22:20 because it's trendy,</p><p>0187 10:10:22:20 10:10:26:14 and that's the biggest worry.</p><p>0188 10:10:26:14 10:10:31:13</p><p>Because of wanting to fit in, wanting to use this technology,</p><p>0189 10:10:31:13 10:10:35:07 they are open to far more than when I was a girl.</p><p>0190 10:10:35:07 10:10:38:00</p><p>You know, this wasn't there.</p><p>0191 10:10:38:00 10:10:41:20</p><p>(narrator) All the social network sites provide powerful tools</p><p>0192 10:10:41:20 10:10:44:10 which restrict the amount of personal information</p><p>0193 10:10:44:10 10:10:48:06 that's made available. But the level of knowledge about these tools,</p><p>0194 10:10:48:06 10:10:50:17 known as privacy or security settings,</p><p>0195 10:10:50:17 10:10:53:09 can be low amongst users.</p><p>0196 10:10:53:09 10:10:58:12</p><p>Dr Beecham's final experiment is testing how good the knowledge is</p><p>0197 10:10:58:12 10:11:00:15 with this group of year 9s.</p><p>0198 10:11:00:15 10:11:05:19</p><p>If we've got a paper profile like this one...</p><p>0199 10:11:05:19 10:11:07:14</p><p>And really all this is</p><p>0200 10:11:07:14 10:11:13:10 is a printed-out copy of the sort of stuff you were saying was all right.</p><p>0201 10:11:13:10 10:11:16:05</p><p>Who would you be happy to give that to?</p><p>0202 10:11:16:05 10:11:19:23 - (boy) Friends. - Your friends. Right.</p><p>0203 10:11:19:23 10:11:23:01</p><p>So if I was to take all of these</p><p>0204 10:11:23:01 10:11:26:17 and throw them all out of the window...</p><p>0205 10:11:30:23 10:11:34:10</p><p>How happy would you feel about that?</p><p>0206 10:11:34:10 10:11:38:03</p><p>There were a few that would because people still walk around school</p><p>0207 10:11:38:03 10:11:41:21 and then it'll be on the floor so people can still pick 'em up.</p><p>0208 10:11:41:21 10:11:47:16</p><p>So we don't think it's a good idea to cast our profile to the wind</p><p>0209 10:11:47:16 10:11:50:14 and let everybody look at it.</p><p>0210 10:11:50:14 10:11:52:22</p><p>So, how can we control that, then?</p><p>0211 10:11:52:22 10:11:57:05</p><p>Because there are good things about social networking sites.</p><p>0212 10:11:57:05 10:12:00:24 We don't want to frighten you to the point of, "I'm not gonna use those."</p><p>0213 10:12:00:24 10:12:02:22</p><p>There are good reasons for using them.</p><p>0214 10:12:02:22 10:12:06:15</p><p>But what we need to do is to use them in a safe way.</p><p>0215 10:12:06:15 10:12:11:01</p><p>So, how do we do that? That's what this next activity's about.</p><p>0216 10:12:11:01 10:12:17:14</p><p>What we're gonna do is look at three different social networking sites,</p><p>0217 10:12:17:14 10:12:22:20 and I'm going to ask you to look at the privacy settings on those sites</p><p>0218 10:12:22:20 10:12:24:19 and see if we can change them</p><p>0219 10:12:24:19 10:12:29:13 so that the profile would be far more protected. OK?</p><p>0220 10:12:29:13 10:12:32:21</p><p>Which fields have you actually decided are the important ones</p><p>0221 10:12:32:21 10:12:34:19 to block, then? 0222 10:12:34:19 10:12:38:08</p><p>The photos, the videos, education, work.</p><p>0223 10:12:38:08 10:12:43:01</p><p>Right. Because all of those have got information</p><p>0224 10:12:43:01 10:12:45:11 which might be able to identify you.</p><p>0225 10:12:45:11 10:12:48:18</p><p>Right. Our Child Exploitation and Online Protection police squad 0431 10:24:13:20 10:24:18:02 did a strategic overview in 2007</p><p>0432 10:24:18:02 10:24:21:17 and found that one in four children that they surveyed</p><p>0433 10:24:21:17 10:24:24:15 had met up with an online stranger.</p><p>0434 10:24:24:15 10:24:27:20</p><p>OK.
