Week 5
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you so much for all the fabulous homework you have been doing. Lots of children have told me they have new scissors-please allow them to practise cutting as much as possible, it will help to strengthen the muscles in their hand.
On Monday we read a story about Noddy and his little taxi. The children used a small world scene to retell the story to each other and we talked about the different characters and whether what they did was always the right thing. I don’t think it is the last we are going to hear about Noddy and his taxi!
We investigated magnets on Tuesday: first we predicted what we thought would be magnetic and what we thought would not be magnetic. The children quickly learnt new vocabulary such as force, attract, magnetic and non-magnetic. Some children also went on a treasure hunt looking for magnetic things around school and outside. They used the I-pads to take photographs of the magnetic things they found. We will be using our knowledge about magnets during one of our lessons next week.
The old bear appeared in our classroom several times this week…we still don’t know exactly where he came from! On Wednesday he set the children the challenge of finding shapes he had hidden outside, naming them and talking about their properties. Then on Thursday he seemed to be in a mischievous mood and sent the children a recipe for making mud paint and challenged them to paint a picture of themselves. Luckily the rain held off and the children enthusiastically collect mud and water, mixed their paint using sticks, added a few extra ingredients such as mint, lavender and dill to make it smell nice, then used their paint to paint their picture. It was so much fun and we have some great pictures to send to the bear.
Home Activity- optional
Let’s practise cutting again! I would like the children to draw round shapes, boxes or cups etc and then cut them out. Please allow your child to do the cutting even if they end up with no shape left at the end. Cutting round pictures is a skill they need to learn. Notices
We love conkers at this time of year: feel free to bring them in if your child likes collecting them.
Monday 16th October: please bring a small cardboard box e.g the sort tea, breadsticks, pasta, cakes etc come in.
We will be going to the school hall for our first PE lesson on Tuesday so all children will need a pair of pumps.
Thursday 19th October: we are going to be looking at toys from the sixties and seventies. If you have any that you could lend us please bring them on before Thursday. Old toys are supposed to look bashed, broken and even hideous so don’t feel embarrassed if your toys fit my description.
On Monday 23rd October nursery children are taking part in a workshop led by Blackburn museum. The children are invited to dress up in Victorian clothes for the day. (Years 1 and 2 did a similar event last week so you may be able to borrow costumes if you know any older children.)
If you need to contact me at any time during the year please feel free to email or phone. Alternatively you may speak to me in person at the beginning or end of every session. [email protected] Telephone: 244580
