Bakewell Mannerians RUFC Ltd. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on Monday 11th May 2015 at The Medway Centre, Bakewell

Present: The attendance list indicated that 19 people attended (10 constitute a Quorum).

1. Apologies for absence: Mark Elliott, Andrew Schofield, Richard Sherwood, Steve Harker, Martin Allbrighton, Mike Dabell.

2. Approval of Minutes of previous Annual General Meeting, 12th May 2014 These had previously been posted on the Club Notice Board and website, were unanimously agreed and signed by the Chairman.

A minutes silence was held to honour the memory of Les Rawson and Will Musgrove.

3. Chairman’s Report

Jack gave a full account of the season at the dinner two nights ago so I will not go into detail. With the first team at the bottom of the league at Christmas to finish a comfortable eight at the end of the season was a credit to all concerned. The second team have also acquitted themselves well playing two leagues higher than the previous season. Jack Duncan is standing down as first team captain and I would like to thank him for two years excellent work.

JUNIOR PLAYING I will leave the mini and junior sections to make their reports shortly. I would just like to thank all the organisers for their efforts over the season sometimes in difficult circumstances. I would particularly like to mention Alison, Teresa and Andy. Andy Reader is standing down after ten years as he is returning to his native Norfolk and I thank him for all he has done for the club and wish him well.

FACILITIES My report last year was hopeful that the planned move to Lady Manners School would go ahead, sadly this is now in grave doubt. The school are happy to lease land adjacent to the school but do not want to become involved in a partnership with us. They do not want to share their facilities. This means that funding streams are much more limited and any pitches developed by ourselves would be funded by way of an RFU interest free loan. Using RFU specifications, a prerequisite of an RFU loan, we are talking of up to £100,000 per pitch which the club cannot afford. The Facilities Sub Committee, with some new blood, will meet in the near future to take stock and plan the way ahead, looking at both playing and training facilities. In the meantime the Showground has its problems but it is the only alternative in the short term. The club spent £2000 last season on improving the drainage on the centre ring and this has paid dividends.

1 CONCLUSION I would like to thank all those that make this club work – you know who you are! For those that don’t contribute - try it - it will give you a warm glow! It is a miracle the club survives with it lack of facilities and I thank all who keep it afloat. We must all strive to make things better and consolidate the future of the club.

Tim Sargent Chairman Bakewell Mannerians RUFC

4. Treasurer’s Report

The treasurer was unable to attend the meeting. However the attached figures were provided.

5. Junior and Minis Co-ordinator’s Report

Minis report. Written by Alison Bentley The season started on Sunday 7th September. As we were unable to use the show ground throughout September Tim secured the use of Lady Manners. Unfortunately the U12’s team decided not to continue due to a drop in numbers and we thank Chris Whawell for his efforts with his team over the years. Despite this we have approximately 55 children playing in the minis section. We have had a full fixtures list playing matches against Matlock, Sheffield, Dronfield, Glossop, Ilkeston, Asbourne, Tupton and Belper. We also had teams entered at both the Ilkeston and Matlock festivals.

Kit Kit has been arranged through Kitlocker for those wishing to purchase shirts. I was informed after placing an order at the beginning of the season that the shirt we had last season had been discontinued even though we were assured it would be readily available. The replacement, whilst being the same design is slightly different colour wise and as a result we have a mix of old shirts and new shirts and lots of different shades of blue! I am trying to secure some funding by way of grants to buy a set of match shirts for each minis age group so we all look part of the same team/club. I hope to have this in place by the beginning of next season.

Volunteers All the coaches have completed the rugby ready course. A number of the coaches have the level one coaching certificate and I believe Ben Milton intends to complete the level two course over the summer. As always volunteers are short on the ground. We have only one coach at some age groups which can cause difficulties when there are holidays or other commitments. Team managers are also in short supply although a plea for help at the prize giving did bring forward one Mum willing to help out with this. Senior players helping to coach this season included Ed Hutchinson at U11’s and Adam Pearce at U10’s although we lose Adam next season when he goes to university. I would like to see more and I invite any 2 senior players that would be interested in coaching to get in touch and come along. Our minis become our juniors. Our juniors become our first and second team players and for the children to see our senior players coming along and helping them to develop their skills, find their positions within the game and move on to the older teams can only strengthen the links between all the ages. What could be more rewarding seeing the children you help develop their game become future star players? Any help would be thankfully received and greatly appreciated.

Pitches Sadly we were only able to use the show ground three times this season. This was for a number of reasons, either clashes with the older teams or simply that the show ground was not fit to play on for the small people! We were able to use Lady Manners on a number of occasions as well as Rowsley recreation ground. An agreement was reached with Rowsley parish council to have the use of the rec whenever we wanted for a charge of £10.00 per time. As we have used the ground 8 times this season we need to arrange to send a cheque in the sum of £80.00. I would like to thank Trevor Atkin for being our contact with Rowsley parish council and making the necessary arrangements. I hope we can continue this agreement next season so we have that option should we need it. Where we have had to use Lady Manners or Rowsley for matches I have transported food from the Farmers Feast and had to distribute it from the back of my car or from camping tables brought along by some of the coaches. Certainly not ideal besides being embarrassing having to explain the situation to visiting clubs. At a previous committee meeting the possibility of the minis being able to use the park in Bakewell as well as the pavilion was discussed and I wonder if any progress has been made meeting on that point?

RuggerEds I was approached by Jack Jones from a company called RuggerEds about working alongside the club. They were looking for a club in the area to work with providing training for children too young to join in with the minis. They introduce the very basic skills and disciplines for children aged from 3 years to 9 years. They have visited all the schools in the area and given free taster sessions in a bid to recruit. They have also produced a leaflet promoting their service and have included the club which I have also included. The idea is that when they become old enough to play for the minis they would bring them along and introduce them to our U7’s team, acting as a feeder is you like. They have agreed with the council to use an area of the park as well as the pavilion. The first session was held on Saturday 2nd May and was an encouraging start. They had 12 children sign up the first week with more signing up for the second. Jack also asked if any of the senior players would be interested in helping also providing another link to the club. This could be voluntary or as a paid employee. Director of Rugby, Martin Pearce made some enquiries and had three replies. Joe Pearce, Ben Hutchinson and Ben Finney. I have passed their details onto Jack and he will contact them directly.

End of Season After a relatively successful season (We only had to cancel a handful of fixtures because of bad weather!) but feeling a little homeless at times the season ended in April with both the Matlock and Ilkeston festivals and the 3 annual minis prize giving. This year at least we had dry weather and a great turn out. New Close farm provided the food by way of a barbeque and Jack Duncan came along to present the awards. Mike Dabell was on hand with his trusty camera providing an enormous amount of images to look through! It was great to see the likes of TC and Martin Crapper there too! There were others, I just couldn’t tell you who! We also managed a couple of trips to watch Leicester Tigers with the children being asked to provide the guard of honour for the match against Bath on 4th January. All very exciting and it was on the telly too!

Next Season All fixtures are in place for next season and I expect to have more children joining in as the World Cup gets underway. We will have teams from U7’s up to U12’s. The season will begin with registration as usual on Sunday 6th September at 10.30.

U13’s Report Written by Teresa law. At the start of the season we had the U12’s join us when their team folded. After a few weeks of grief from parents about where and when their kids were playing, a statement was issued outlining how the squad was going to be run;  In friendly matches: A starting line-up would be selected from all available players then rolling subs would endeavour to allow all players to play.  NLD Matches: Selection would be made according to form and ability regardless of age. The RFU core values were also handed out to spectators including the following points;  Respect officials and accept their decision.  Value coaches and those who run our club.

Achievements Played 20 games and won half.

In the NLD all our matches were played away due to the pitch being unplayable. Glossop, Derby, Sleaford, Long Eaton Winning ¾.

Getting through to the semi-finals where we lost to Mansfield 19-5.

1st 7’s tournament at Southwell: Having never played or practiced the boys played our 1st 2 games like a 15 a side team. They then turned it around and came runners up in the Bowl competition again losing to Mansfield.

Leicester Tigers Trials Mount St Marys: I put 5 boys forward for 6 weeks of trials and 3 have been accepted onto the development course starting in September.

Fun Stuff Llandaff from Cardiff: The pitch was totally unplayable and our boys didn’t get out of our half. They did however win the swallow diving competition! In 4 inches of mud! This was followed by a great party and BBQ at Hargate Hall, a great location for touring sides to party.

4 Last game of the season Bridge North from Shropshire: Embarrassment at having to play on the football pitch as there were dogs on the showground! Won 39-29. Followed by a picnic and raft building at Carsington.

Future 2015/16 fixtures are in place. We are not playing Chesterfield due to their players’ behaviour and blatant cheating by their coach. We did beat them twice this season but I want the boys to play rugby, not play against thugs.

Preseason training Working on fitness, upper body strength and tackling.

My boys are now a solid squad of which I am proud. BRING ON NEXT SEASON!

U14’s report written by Lind Mayhew Once again, it has been the second full season operating as a Barbarian team known as Bakelock. (Bakewell and Matlock U14s).

Bakewell contingent - 12 players registered - 1 of whom returned after a season out of action recovering from knee surgery, and 1 other, who returned after having temporarily hung up his boots at the end of U9 season. (From those players registered last year, we lost 1 player to trials bikes and 1 who has taken a year out due to having dental treatment that prevented him from being able to wear a gum shield). The season ended with 17 registered Matlock Players and 12 young Mannerians.

Tragically, one of our most talented and aspiring young players, Will Musgrove, passed away in February. Not only was Will one of Bakelock's Mannerians' players, he had been selected for Tigers Development squad. Suffice to say that the rest of our season has been played out with heavy hearts. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Will's coaches, friends and team-mates, and his family. Bakelock Rugby meant the world to him and this feeling was mutual - the team having played a full and active role in his Memorial Service.

Bakelock continued to compete at the NLD Cup level. Finished second in their pool to Newark (who eventually went on to win the NLD Cup) and missed out on qualification for the semi-final by just 1 point. Bakelock will compete for the Cup again in 2015-16.

Entered 2 teams to the NLD 7s competition - the intention being to give all players a taste of the 7s game. Played out in the most appalling weather conditions, the B team acquitted themselves well but lost out by 1 try in the semi-final of the Shield competition to Newark B. Bakelock 7s A team finished second in the pool stage, and ended the day victorious in securing the NLD 7s Plate.

The team's final festival of the season will take place on Sunday 17 May when they will compete in the Macclesfield 7s festival.

The Barbarian team have played their home games at Matlock RUFC 5 where there is plenty of space and the ground has been playable throughout the season. Training takes place on Wednesday nights with the advantage of Matlock floodlights during dark nights. Indoor fitness training sessions took place in Bakewell from January to mid-March which worked well, seeing between 20 - 25 players turning up to training each week (far more than would have been the case had training taken place outdoors) and helped improve player fitness levels ready for Rugby 7s.

As a result of the gym sessions, the team managed to hook themselves a new coach in the process - Tom Oldfield, has added a new and much valued dimension to the coaching team. Tom is looking to take Level 2 coaching. (another young Matlock player, Jack, joined the Bakelock coaching team this season who is taking his Level 2 coaching qualification, Tom focussing on the 'backs' whilst Jack works with the 'forwards').

Finally, the team once again went on Tour over the May Day Bank Holiday week-end. Bakelock took part in the Leicester Tigers Challenge at Butlins, Minehead, against some strong opposition. Whilst there was no silverware won at the end of the competition - a good time was had by all. There were 68 Bakelock tourists, including 25 players. The primary objective had been to have fun - which we did -in abundance - culminating in the Rugby World Cup themed evening on the Saturday night.

The Bakelock Ba-Ba team will continue into its third season next year.
