TODAY’S PROGRAM

San Pedro High School Principal Jeanette Stevens was our speaker. She is a dynamic, enthusiastic administrator and veteran educator. Jeanette is a graduate of Mary Star of the Sea High School.

She had the opportunity while in high school to speak before a Rotary Club and she credits that experience with raising the bar and motivating her to live up to the expectations and plans she told the Rotary Club she had for herself.

Jeanette updated us on the curriculum delivery changes at San Pedro High. The courses taught must relate to and directly connect with the real world. She described the block schedule where students will have one teacher for 100 minutes. No more running from class to class when the bell sounds. Teachers will be able to assign students to groups within their blocks of instruction and focus more attention on slower students who need extra help while monitoring the progress of faster students. Students may be regrouped as necessary. This concept is known as relational education and has been well received by faculty and staff. San Pedro High is up 17 points on their API scores. Jeanette is looking for internships for students and guest speakers who can share their professions, what they studied, what they did and how they came to enter their occupations. The school is hosting a career day on November 18. She hopes to attract speakers to address how to run a business, how to write a business plan, how to set up an accounting San Pedro Rotary Newsletter – September 9, 2010 Page 3 system for the business and how to set up and follow a budget.

This delivery change is intended to encourage students to stay in school, reduce the dropout rate and sustain the increase in API scores over time. The school partners with organizations like Junior Achievement, Rotary and Toastmasters to address these goals and integrate the organizations’ goals into the curriculum while promoting and encouraging community involvement. Jeanette mentioned the communications course in documentary filmmaking (Doc Rocks) which filmed MAKE UP OPPORTUNITIES the dancing with the stars fundraiser at the Warner Grand Theatre, our Interact Club, and that while MONDAY attending a Neighborhood Council meeting she 7:15am Manhattan Beach @ The Marriott 1400 Parkview discovered her neighbor trains police K-9 dogs which Ave, Manhattan Beach dovetailed nicely into the school’s Police Academy TUESDAY magnet program. 12:10pm: Del Amo-Torrance @ The Depot Restaurant, 1250 Cabrillo Ave, Torrance She also spoke about the public school choice 7:00pm Palos Verdes Sunset @ The Original Red Onion initiative where underperforming schools must have 736 Silver Spur Rd., P.V.Peninsula an intervention program during school time for WEDNESDAY students to receive instruction which will prepare 7:15am: South Bay Sunrise @ Marie Calendar them to pass the CHSEE [exit exam]. The 2009 API Restaurant 21211 Hawthorne Bl. Torrance scores were the benchmark and SPHS, after being 12:00pm: Lomita-Torrance Airport @ Marie Calendar up 42 points, a difficult achievement to sustain, fell Restaurant 21211 Hawthorne Bl., Torrance by 9 points during the benchmark year thus labeling 12:00pm: TORRANCE @ The Depot Restaurant 1250 them as underperforming despite gaining 17 points Cabrillo Ave. Torrance this year. SPHS will address the 2009 drop via the 12:10pm: CARSON GARDENA DOMINGUEZ @ block instruction delivery program while the Millender McDonald Community Center, Carson intervention is a web- based tutorial program popular 12:15pm: REDONDO BEACH @ Bluewater Grill 665 N. with 9th grade students considered at-risk under the Harbor Dr. Redondo Beach public school choice initiative. FRIDAY 12:15pm PALOS VERDES PENINSULA @Palos Verdes Algebra scores are the biggest stumbling block in Golf Club, 3301 Via Campesina API performance. Algebra I should be an 8th grade Palos Verdes Estates course but many students are not successful so 9th graders must take Algebra I plus the web based intervention program. The kids love the computer CYBER MAKE UPS assisted intervention program and parents are able www.rotaryeclub34.org to log into the secure system and monitor their www.rotaryeclubny1.com children’s progress. www.rotaryeclubsouthwest.org www.rotaryeclub7890.org
