Interviewer: Gemma Abbott Cusp Project Location: Peck Building SIUE campus Nov. 21, 2010
G: I am interviewing Christina Carlson at the Peck Hall on SIUE campus. This is Gemma Abbott on Nov. 21st, 2010. G: Could I have you say your name and spell it for us.
C: Ok, my name is Christina Carlson spelled C-H-R-I-S-T-I-N-A C-A-R-L-S-O-N
G: Ok, and what object do you have for us today?
C:Umm I brought in some sheet music, uhh Chopin’s Nocturne #9-2 umm yeah.
G: Ok, umm what inspires you? Is it the music that inspires you or is it playing the music that inspires you?
C: Umm, the reason I brought it in was because this was a song played at my wedding last summer and my husband plays the piano so he has been learning it. So I thought of it because it continues to inspire me whenever I hear him play it. I also have the sheet music in the scrapbook from my wedding. So it is something that I have to keep from that. It’s also one of my favorite songs. So I think Chopin is just inspiring to listen to but also it inspires me because personal connections to it.
G: So when is the first time you heard this in your life?
C: Umm, probably when I was younger I grew up around people who played the piano a lot my aunt, my grandma. Umm, I have played piano since I was five so I am not as good as a lot of people but I do know how to play well enough to understand enough about it to appreciate some things more than others. Umm, so I really liked Chopin always and uh it just any type of piano song, this one by Chopin is often played on the piano reminds me of times with my grandma up to times with my husband because he plays piano a lot too and other instruments. So I have been around musical stuff quite a bit so it kind of continues to inspire me in that way.
G: umm, How do you think this is going to inspire you in the future?
C: Oh well, I hope that my husband learns to play it well and that umm I hope that someday our kids will be able to listen to him play Chopin’s compositions. I think it is good for kids to be exposed to that stuff and I will probably have them be taught the piano or some sort of musical instrument because I think it’s good for them and uhh I don’t know. I can’t think of any way else it would inspire me in the future other than to listen to it.
G: yeah, is there anything else about this piece of music that you would like to tell us?
C: Umm I don’t know anything in particular except that its good music to listen to if you’re writing a paper or doing something else like that. So it can inspire you to be a better writer and/ or studier as well maybe.
