Dollhouse/Shoebox Crime Scene Project

Dollhouse/Shoebox Crime Scene Project

INTRODUCTION: Your group – up to three members per group- has been assigned to make a ‘dollhouse/shoebox crime scene.’

You and your partners will prepare a dollhouse/diorama crime scene and bring it into class by the due date (November 29, 2010). Your crime scene must include evidence which is to scale so fellow classmates can analyze and “solve” the cimre. Keep in mind, a diorama is a scene that includes a model, and tells a story.

Your group’s crime scene will be presented to classmates, and the teacher will evaluate its accuracy. The final grade will be an average of a (self) group evaluation, classroom comments by peers, and teacher analysis

SPECIFIC SET-UP: Your group will set up a single room/area crime scene using any dollhouse/play toys commonly found from a toy store. The crime scene should include all relevant physical evidence so an investigator could solve the crime.

Your group must also include a page with an annotated list of all physical evidence presented in the diorama. Your group's annotated list should include: 1. Complete list of the physical evidence present 2. A brief summary of the crime scene

Important Notes: Your group is expected to present a crime scene. SEXUALLY ORIENTATED CRIMES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED/PRESENTED!

Format: Make it exciting! In addition to finding appropriate content for your diorama, your group must consider presentation format. Display the information as effectively as you can. Apply information presented in this class, along with what you have learned in other classes and in life.

DUE DATE: The dollhouse crime scenes are due Monday, November 29, 2010. Dollhouses/shoeboxes may be turned in prior to the due date. Please note: All projects turned in after the due date will earn a maximum of 75%.

GRADING: Information - /20 Complete list of physical evidence and brief summary of crime Level of Detail - /10 Attention to detail, placement, figures, groundwork, physical evidence Technical accuracy – 10/ Accessories, consistency, story line Degree of difficulty/Overall Feel - /10 Accurately and creatively you present the crime scene

Total Project Value: 50 points (the same as a test)

Important! There is no perfect way of grading group projects, but the following method works well. If you have any problems with this approach and/or if you have a better idea, you must bring it up in class within the first 2 weeks of class. You will receive a group grade for the project based on the deliverables. Your individual grade for the group part of the project will be determined as follows:

• Calculate the percentage of time (t) spent on group projects for each group member; for example, if the average time spent on the project was 2 hours, then if you spent 2.5 hours, your t = 125%.

• Calculate your effectiveness (e) based on your group member's rankings of your usefulness on the project. For example, if there are 3 group members, then the average effectiveness should be 33% each. If your effectiveness was ranked as 33% based on an average of your group mate’s ranking, then your e = 100%.

• Your grade for the project = (group grade * 0.5e) + (group grade * 0.5t). For Example, if you had a t of 105% and an e of 95%, then if your group received a 92% on the project, your grade for the project would be: Your grade = (92 * (0.5 * 1.05)) + (92 * (0.5 *.95)) = 93%

* This means you can individually score better than your group grades if your e and t come out higher than 100%. It also means that your grade will suffer a lot if you do not participate in the project.
