Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners

When requesting the skills included in the Orthopaedic Specialty Protocol: (Arthrocentesis, Joint Injections: Shoulder, Elbow, Greater Trochanteric Bursa, Knee and Ankle)

1. The collaborating physician must request permission from the Board of Medical Examiners (Board) to train the nurse practitioner to perform the requested joints. This can be completed by letter or the form provided and must include training and procedure protocols.

2. The CRNP must submit an online application to the Alabama Board of Nursing to add the Orthopaedic Specialty Protocol.

3. Upon completion of the skills the CRNP must submit documentation of supervised practice on the form included with your approval letter to both the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Nursing for approval. A total of 25 supervised procedures including no less than 3 of each joint for which you want to be approved to perform. This documentation should be submitted to both the Alabama Board of Nursing and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners for approval to perform these skills independently.

**TRAINING MAY NOT BEGIN UNTIL GIVEN APPROVAL FROM BOTH ABN AND ABME. SUPERVISED PRACTICE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITHIN 2 YEARS OF APPROVAL TO TRAIN OR APPROVAL TO TRAIN WILL LAPSE!
