MINUTES Civic Arts Commission Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. North Berkeley Senior Center 1901 Hearst Street, Berkeley, CA 94710 Please Refrain From Wearing Scented Products To Public Meetings.
REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING OF THE CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION 6:30
1. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Thompson called the meeting to order at 6:35pm.
2. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners Ione Elioff, David Snippen, Jos Sances, Suzy Thompson, Chiori Santiago and Sarah Sanderson Commissioner Lori Taguma resigned on January 2, 2007 Absent: Barbara Coleman Public: Christopher Castle from Emeryville, CA
3. PUBLIC COMMENT None.
4. APROVAL OF MINUTES The November 29, 2006 Minutes were amended and approved as follows: Item #2, Commissioner Santiago present. Motion: Commissioner Snippen, second Commissioner Sances to approved the November 29, 2006 minutes as amended. Vote: Approved unanimously.
5. CHAIR’S REPORT No report.
6. ACTION ITEMS a. Approve Council Item regarding Contract Amendment for Artist John Wehrle to increase the contract amount by $15,000 to paint a second mural on the train platform west wall.

Motion: Commissioner Elioff, second Commissioner Sances to approve (in principle) the Council Item regarding Contract Amendment for Artist John Wehrle to increase the contract amount by $15,000 to paint a second mural on the train platform west wall. Vote: Approved unanimously. b. Approval of Downtown Area Plan Advisory Committee (DAPAC) recommendation. Motion: Commissioner Sances, second Commissioner Elioff to accept the recommendation in principle with the clarification of whether Public Art Private Development (Santa Monica) should place 1% in a fund for the arts in lieu of the Cultural Density Bonus. Vote: Approved unanimously.
7. COMMITTEE REPORTS a. Grant Committee: Suzie Thompson – no report. b. Public Art Committee: David Snippen I-80 Bike Bridge - full-scale work in progress; studio visit scheduled. San Pablo Park Historic Marker – work in progress. Train Stop with Redevelopment – near completion. Corporation Yard Gates – studio visit, work in progress. 1947 Center Street Brenda Prager’s art selection – No progress. Turtles size and material for Civic Center Fountain – ongoing. Restoration of Mural on second floor in Civic Center – Pending. Plaques for signage for Public Art Projects – Cost estimate is $3,000 plus, pending. Commissioner Snippen to finalize quote and installation proposal as soon as possible. c. Education Committee: Barbara Coleman – No report. d. West Berkeley Inventory Committee: Need to nominate a Chair. Discussion of Committee goals; work of hired intern; time-line of tasks; Commission agreed to set categories for Arts/Crafts uses; affirm that survey is not for code enforcement or business license purposes; and not to distinguish between professional vs. amateur (hobby) uses.
