GLENN, INTERIM EXECUTIVE 12 DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA COMMISSION ON 13 HIGHER EDUCATION, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 14 RETIREMENT, TO EXTEND DEEP APPRECIATION FOR HIS 15 MORE THAN FORTYFOUR YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED 16 PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 17 AND TO OFFER BEST WISHES FOR A SATISFYING AND 18 REWARDING RETIREMENT. 19 20 Whereas, for close to half a century, the State of South Carolina 21 has enjoyed the benefit of the dedication, experience, and 22 leadership of Gary S. Glenn, interim executive director of the 23 South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, who on April 6, 24 2017, will retire after more than fortyfour years of outstanding 25 public service; and 26 27 Whereas, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, longtime 28 Columbia resident Gary Glenn has distinguished himself in a 29 career that has taken him from the Aeronautics Commission to the 30 Department of Mental Health, the Department of Social Services, 31 the Department of Education, and for the past eighteen years the 32 Commission on Higher Education (CHE); and 33 34 Whereas, during most of this time, this patriotic son of South 35 Carolina also has served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves, 36 from which he retired as a lieutenant colonel after more than 37 twentyeight years of service. His state and military assignments 38 have afforded him opportunities to serve in increasingly important 39 roles, the most recent for the State being his selection in 2015 as 40 interim executive director of the Commission on Higher 41 Education; and 42

[4089] 2 1 Whereas, Tim Hofferth, CHE chairman, offers this wellearned 2 commendation in praise of Gary Glenn: “We wouldn’t be where 3 we are right now without Gary Glenn. He wanted to retire back in 4 2015, but we practically begged him to stay. We owe a tremendous 5 debt of gratitude to Gary and his wife, Kim, for being willing to 6 put their plans on hold in order to serve the greater good. There 7 was no one better qualified to lead this agency over the past two 8 years of unprecedented transition. Gary’s passion and dedication to 9 higher education and the citizens of South Carolina are an 10 inspiration to all of us as we continue on our path to move the 11 CHE forward”; and 12 13 Whereas, his colleagues will remember Mr. Glenn’s trademark 14 phrase for his employees, “passion, commitment, and respect,” and 15 seek to honor it; and 16 17 Whereas, although Gary Glenn will be stepping back from the 18 daytoday operations of CHE, he has agreed, the House is pleased 19 to learn, to continue to serve the agency and the State in a 20 consulting capacity on a projectbyproject basis at the request of the 21 board; and 22 23 Whereas, Gary Glenn finds strength for his duties in the strong 24 support of his family: his lovely wife, Kim; the couple’s two 25 children, Stephen and Erin; and two charming granddaughters, 26 Sydney and Avery; and 27 28 Whereas, the House of Representatives is grateful for the legacy of 29 consistent commitment and leadership Gary Glenn has bestowed 30 on the people of South Carolina. Speaking on behalf of his many 31 friends in state government, the House takes great pleasure in 32 wishing him all the best as he enters retirement, and the members 33 trust he will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the 34 days ahead. Now, therefore, 35 36 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 37 38 That the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this 39 resolution, honor Gary S. Glenn, interim executive director of the 40 South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, on the occasion 41 of his retirement, extend deep appreciation for his more than 42 fortyfour years of distinguished public service to the State of South
