ESSENTIAL UNIT 1 (E01)

(General Skills) (JULY 2016)

Unit Statement: The student will follow the rules and library procedures for borrowing a book. Student will identify the sections of the library. Student will identify the parts of a fiction book and will be familiar with the ABC organization of fiction books. Student will learn about the Caldecott Medal (award) for illustrators. It is of equal importance to instill a need to read for pleasure.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

1. The Student Will recognize and locate sections of the library (e.g., circulation desk, easy fiction, nonfiction, biography, reference, magazines).

2. TSW begin to use library resources independently (i.e., computer workstations, reading and listening area).

3. TSW locate and identify parts of a title page (i.e., title, author, illustrator, publisher and place of publication).

4. TSW locate and identify the copyright page and the dedication page of a book.

5. TSW read the book summary (on the back cover or inside cover) to determine if they want to choose the book.

6. TSW alphabetize three books by the first two letters of the author’s last name (i.e., Hawthorne, Henkes, Hill) and explain the purpose of ABC order of fiction books.

7. TSW recognize Caldecott Award winners and understand the significance of the medal (i.e., award).

Introduced Outcomes:

1. The Student Will use Follett Destiny Library Manager (Destiny) to locate fiction books using different searching options (e.g., Keyword, Title, Author, Subject, and Series). 2. TSW browse the collection independently for personal use and locate books by favorite authors or illustrators.

Practiced Outcomes:

1. The Student Will choose and read an age level appropriate book. 2. TSW demonstrate the proper care and handling of library materials. 3. TSW follow the prescribed library procedures.

Internet Resources: Past library curriculum included lists of websites. Unfortunately, website links often change. For this reason, it is best to conduct Internet searches at the point-of-need. For example, to find lesson plans enter the keywords – free elementary library lesson plans – into an Internet search engine (i.e., Bing, Google).
