  • Minor League Baseball and Its Clubs Embodied the Mission of Milb
2019 MiLBTM COMMUNITY REPORT LETTER FROM PAT O’CONNER LETTER FROM PAT Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you for your efforts in making 2019 another successful philanthropic year for Minor League Baseball, our 160 teams and MiLB Charities. As we prepare for the 2020 season, we have many accomplishments from last season to celebrate. None of our efforts would be possible without the great work of our teams, continued dedication from staff at the national office and the support of our millions of fans nationwide. For a fifth straight year, all 160 clubs reported their charitable giving and contributions, allowing us to accurately assess our collective efforts. It gives me great pleasure to say that in 2019, MiLB Charities donated nearly $50 million in cash and gifts in kind from our teams, leagues and partners — once again setting a new record-high total. In addition, MiLB and its teams nearly doubled our volunteer efforts from 2018, giving more than 26,000 hours in service of our communities. This report highlights MiLB Charities’ many programs and initiatives, including the MiLB CommUNITY Initiative presented by Allegiant Air, the Stars & Stripes Caps Program with New Era Cap Company, the Derrick Hall Pro-State Foundation Father’s Day Initiative, Ed Randall’s Fans For the Cure, the Joe Torre Safe At Home Domestic Violence Awareness Initiative, and the “Cover Your Bases” Sun Safety Initiative with the American Cancer Society. These are just a few of the ways our teams and partners are working together to make positive and lasting impacts in our MiLB communities.

February 2, 2015 CSNChicago.com Chicago says goodbye to Mr. Cub Ernie Banks By Patrick Mooney Mr. Cub is gone, leaving this franchise and this city without one of its greatest ambassadors. An A-list crowd turned out at Fourth Presbyterian Church on Saturday morning, memorializing Ernie Banks on what would have been his 84th birthday, remembering his excellence on the field and grace off the field. Sunshine beamed into the stained-glass windows during a ceremony that lasted more than 90 minutes and aired live on multiple TV channels. It almost felt like a Cooperstown exhibit had come to downtown Chicago with Hall of Famers Billy Williams, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, Joe Torre, Lou Brock, Andre Dawson and Fergie Jenkins. Banks, who died last week after suffering a heart attack, probably would have wondered what all the fuss was about. He didn’t want to talk about his game — 512 career home runs, a Gold Glove at shortstop and a spot on Major League Baseball’s All-Century Team — or what it was like when he played. “Ernie was unassuming,” Jenkins said. “He didn’t want the title of being a star. He wanted to be a teammate.” Banks would have loved to listen to the laughter and the upbeat music. Calvin Bridges’ Chicago Praise Ensemble sung “This Little Light of Mine” and “Oh Happy Day,” clapping from the balcony. Williams remembered going to spring training as the next big prospect in the late 1950s and can still see that smiling face welcoming him to the organization.

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If electronic transmission of reserve material is used for purposes in excess of what constitutes "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. Introduction The City of Reno received a Triple-A Minor League Baseball team during the summer of 2009. It is expensive to have a high level baseball team call a city home. Granted, the Reno Aces are not part of Major League Baseball, but they are only one step below. It does not cost nearly as much money to house a minor league team, but Reno is not nearly as large of city as the cities in which professional teams are located. The payrolls of Major League Baseball teams are in the tens of millions of dollars, where as the base pay for rosters at the Triple A baseball level are in the tens of thousands. The players at the Aces level do not play baseball for the money, they play because they love the game. Reno lobbied to have the team brought to Reno for many reasons (hoping the team would give the city a profitable investment and tourist attraction), and the point of the research for this thesis is to find out if it is financially viable to have a team in Reno.
