Rhoad, Sr., and the late Nena 25 Walker Rhoad; and 26 27 Whereas, heeding the call of his country, the young Tom served in 28 the United States Navy during World War II. This patriot claimed 29 as one of the proudest accomplishments of his life serving as a 30 torpedoman on the USS Croatan, an aircraft carrier in the North 31 Atlantic; and 32 33 Whereas, a farmer and employee of the U.S. Postal Service by 34 profession, Mr. Rhoad served as a Bamberg County councilman 35 for two years. In addition, he served with distinction as a member 36 of the South Carolina House of Representatives for twentythree 37 years, during which time he was majority whip and chairman of 38 the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee for many years; 39 and 40 41 Whereas, many accolades were bestowed on Representative Rhoad 42 for service to his State, church, community, family, and friends,
[3884] 2 1 such as the naming of the Thomas N. Rhoad Highway between 2 Bamberg and Denmark in his honor; and 3 4 Whereas, his generosity and kindness often led him to contribute 5 to worthy causes. He donated the land for the volunteer fire 6 department and the expansion of Claflin Methodist Church. He 7 was supportive of the Bamberg County Hospital and instrumental 8 in bringing the Visiting Nurses Association and Bamberg Office of 9 Aging to the county. As a lifelong supporter of the American Red 10 Cross, he worked diligently to further its cause; and 11 12 Whereas, as a man of faith, he was a member of Edisto Baptist 13 Church, where he served as a deacon and church treasurer for 14 twentyseven years. He was also a Clemson IPTAY member for 15 approximately sixty years and loved his Tigers, as well as the 16 Atlanta Braves; and 17 18 Whereas, predeceased by one son, Thomas Nathaniel Rhoad III, 19 Tom Rhoad leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Chessie Hutto 20 Rhoad; two sons, Fred H. (Debbie) Rhoad and Roger W. (Sharon) 21 Rhoad; one daughter, Kim R. (Randy) Berry; five grandchildren, 22 Rusty Rhoad, Jr., Amanda E. Rhoad, Juliana B. Palyok, Randon R. 23 Berry, and Paula A. Kirk; eight greatgrandchildren, Lindsey and 24 Colton Rhoad, Layla and Leslee Strother, Julia Palyok, Natalie and 25 Knox Berry, and Will Billbrough; and a host of nieces, nephews, 26 other relatives, and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who 27 had the privilege of knowing him. Now, therefore, 28 29 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 30 concurring: 31 32 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 33 resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of the 34 Honorable Thomas Nathaniel Rhoad, Jr., of Branchville and 35 extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends. 36 37 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 38 Mrs. Chessie Hutto Rhoad for the family. 39 XX 40
