TEMPLETON CLINIC FEEDBACK oct 6, 2016

From: Alison Yau [[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, October 11, 2016 2:05 PM To: Lee, Karen; Aaron Davis Subject: Re: THANKS -- Ms. Yau for ubc clinics

Thank you Karen for bringing your talented musicians to give music clinics to the kids. It was a wonderful experience and the kids are still talking about it. The students all wrote a reflection afterwards and I've copied some of their responses here. Many of them mentioned their clinician personally, so if you can relay that message back to your class, that would be great. Many thanks!

“I've learned to never be afraid to play loudly even though I make a mistake. Thank you for your hard work, all of you motivated me to try my very best!” –Jhonbbe, Trombone.

“Thank you guy-with-the-beard (sorry, i forgot your name) for teaching me how to play my trumpet better. I will keep working on tightening my lips. I also liked your guitar solo a lot. I can now get the B every time so thank you.” –Jahvoni, Trumpet.

“ I actually learned a fair amount. I was originally completely lost with the notes in the Nutcracker March but I learned quite a lot. I also learned how to keep my sax from squeaking a bunch.

To Hazel: Thank you for teaching me! I learned lots and you seem like a really cool person. You move really well with music and seem like a super creative person.” –Anna, Alto Sax.

“This was a really good experience for me. It was nice to take time on what I needed to learn instead of practicing once or twice and moving on to the next thing. It was really helpful to have someone to teach me one-on-one.”-Melan, Clarinet.

“I think that you should say slide positions along with the notes. That would help a lot with memorization. Maybe help us more with going from low to high notes.Thank you to the whole trombone group.” –Ashley, Trombone.

“I really enjoyed the performance. I didn’t know what the person was doing behind the piano but later I realized she was singing. So the whole time I thought it was a CD because it was so good.” –Annie, Flute.

“Girl with blue shirt and hair tied up: I liked how you taught me that different positions that you place your make different noises. Thank you for encouraging me to hut my low notes.”– Stephanie, Flute.

“This experience was fun. It was interesting and intriguing. If I had another opportunity I’d take it again. I learned two things. One: how to play low notes. Two: how to play chromatic scale. Thanks for teaching me Luke. It was a fun experience (even if I seemed lifeless). Best wishes to you and stay kewl :3 Thanks again” - Kevin, Alto Sax.

“The experience was different than having one person teach a whole section. One on one is much more detailed, they know what we should specifically work on, especially since they are professionals, they/ she helped me reach higher notes and keep the high notes! Jenny was very nice and patient, she helped me with my mistakes and played the tune for me when I wasn’t sure. Thank you jenny ”- Selina, Flute.

“My experience was really helpful and super fun, and informative. I learned how to slur and how to do certain notes, and higher notes. Tim: you did a great job and thank you for helping me with slurs and those other notes.” –Morgan, Trumpet.

“Thank you for teaching me how to play the trumpet Nathan, I had learned a lot in such a little time.”- Daniel, Trumpet.

“By the way, nice performance at the end. I would have played money to see that.”- Brandon, Alto Sax.

“Teacher: Glasses, Brown hair, Blue shirt, name starts with an A. You were really good. You explained everything well. I just wish that I had more time to play with you.”-Jude, Alto sax.

“Your performance was really good! You guys stayed together really well. The beat was together; no one seemed to get lost. I enjoyed the guitar and piano solo, and it was cool seeing how the piano was kind of taking care of the bass. The songs were nice and I was getting inspired from your performance because I play jazz piano.”-Kaytlyn, Flute.

“Overall I had a great experience. I learned about how to move air through my instrument to create a better and a clearer sound. The person who helped me also played the tenor sax, I forgot her name but she had brown hair. It was really helpful that she played some parts with me so there was less pressure if I got lost.” - Aivery, Clarinet.

“I learned how to do pretty good fills and I also learned a bossa beat! I also learned why drummers often make weird faces while playing even though I’m pretty sure that wasn’t intentional.”-Beatrix, Drums.
