School or Classroom Service Learning Award Frequently Asked Questions October 5, 2011

1. Can only teachers write for an award?

No, the entire staff is eligible for one of the grants. In addition students and parents may also submit a grant on behalf or in collaboration with a staff member.

2. What schools are eligible to apply?

All schools located in the Webster Groves School District (public and nonpublic) are eligible to apply for this award.

3. Where can I get help writing my grant?

Please contact either Yvonne Johnson at [email protected] (chair of the award committee) or Sarah Riss at [email protected] for help writing your award application or answering your questions.

4. Are professional development experiences eligible for funding?

Yes, professional development experiences that will have a long term impact on service learning projects are eligible for funding.

5. Can teams of teachers apply for the award?

Yes, we encourage staff to collaborate on service learning projects. This could be across grades, between schools, with different disciplines, etc.

6. When are award applications due?

Rotary Service Learning Award applications are due no later than January 15th to Yvonne Johnson. They should be submitted electronically to her at [email protected].

7. What types of technology might be considered for funding? Equipment or technology that is used to support the service learning project could be purchased with the award funds.

8. Are consumables eligible for funding?

Yes, award funds may be used for consumables that support the ongoing service learning project.

9. Will student field trips and School Assemblies be considered?

Yes, award funds may be used for this type of activity that directly supports service learning projects.

10. Are there a few key points to keep in mind when writing a grant?

Please be sure to answer every question and clearly address each criterion listed on the award application. Failure to do so results in fewer points earned and therefore the award is less likely to be granted.
