Multidisciplinary Minors
The multidisciplinary minor is described in the undergraduate catalog under “Multidisciplinary Minors.” The following information applies to the Multidisciplinary Minor.
1. The minor must consist of at least 24 semester hours of courses. Nine semester hours must be above 2999. The minor should comprise courses from three to five disciplines. Check the catalog under which you expect to graduate – more recent catalogs require only 18 semester hours.
2. The minor requires a written focus that goes beyond existing disciplinary or other multidisciplinary minors. The student, in consultation with his or her advisor, develops a written plan that explains the purpose and rationale of the minor and proposed courses.
3. The written plan must be approved by the Undergraduate Studies Program Director and Department Chair before the student completes 80 semester hours.
4. The student will complete the course of study under the supervision of his or her advisor.
Before proposing a "design your own" multidisciplinary minor, please review the list of interdisciplinary minors available at ECU to be sure that one of those does not serve your needs.
Interdisciplinary minors described in the catalog: African and African American Studies Asian Studies Classical Studies Coastal and Marine Studies Ethnic Studies Great Books Indigenous Peoples of the Americas International Studies Leadership Studies Medieval and Renaissance Studies Neuroscience Studies North Carolina Studies Religious Studies Russian Studies Security Studies Science – recommended for pre-med and pre-dental students Women's Studies
Students must provide a strong rationale for proposing multidisciplinary minors of their own design.
Composite Minors
Psychology used to have several options for “composite” minors, but these are now history.
From: Baker, Michael Drew, Jr Sent: Friday, September 02, 2016 1:49 PM Subject: FW: Multidisciplinary Composite Science Minor for Psychology Majors
Dear psychology advising faculty members,
Please be aware that the Composite Science minor that our faculty approved for student use many years ago will no longer be accepted by the ECU Registrar’s office as an approved minor for students using the 2016-2017 catalog and beyond. Due to the fact that students must have completed 40 credit hours of coursework prior to declaring our major and being assigned to one of you for advising, this should not affect any of the advisees who are currently assigned to you. If you currently have any advisees who are pursuing this minor, they will still be permitted to complete it as long as they are using one of the eligible catalogs (2012-2013, 2014-2015, or 2015-2016). However, it will affect transfer students who started at ECU this semester and declare in the Spring of 2017, as well as future generations of psychology majors.
Hi Michael,
Does this also apply to our PreMedical/PreDental Studies minor?
Unfortunately, yes. Our pre-med and pre-dental minors fell under the general “composite science” banner so they will not be allowed either. Students will either need to complete the Science Minor (requirements for this are not changing, from what I have heard) or satisfy the requirements stated for a multidisciplinary minor in the current catalog, which includes at least 9 credit hours above level 2999 from an area other than the major field.
That Science Minor does not include 9sh above 2999. Is that changing too?
requirements for this are not changing, from what I have heard COMPOSITE and MULTIDISCIPLINARY MINORS Department of Psychology
Students majoring in Psychology are able to select a minor from the approved list of minors at ECU. They also have the option of selecting one of several pre-designed composite minors. Also, students are able to construct their own multidisciplinary minor that is offered to all majors in the Harriott College of Arts and Sciences. Details for constructing a multidisciplinary minor are also included.
The Pre-Medical and the Composite Science minors do not require special approval, but students selecting one of these composite minors should identify that option to their academic advisor prior to completing 80 hours of college credit.
