(1) Find your favorite poem and re-read it to me. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Have you ever written a poem?

(2) Look on page 12. How would you get out of an egg if you were a chick? (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Recall a time that you saw a chick hatch from an egg.

(3) Look on page 14 and list the birds that were in the old man’s beard. (Answer) Two owls, a hen, four larks, and a wren. (Follow Up) Name what the birds built in his beard.

(4) If you were a bird, what would you think about the way people looked and acted? (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Recall a time when you pretended to be an animal and tell about it.

(5) Look on page 22. Tell what the lizards hunt for beneath the floor. (Answer) Bugs. (Follow Up) Name what the lizard longs to be.

(6) Compare the way the ape on page 26 acted when he saw something scary with a time you saw something scary. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Recall a time that you went to the zoo.

(7) Recall what the author doesn’t like about eggs. (Answer) The way they slide, their soft insides, etc. (Follow Up) Recall how the eggs he is talking about are cooked.

(8) Look on page 34. Recall what the bear ate with his peas. (Answer) Honey. (Follow Up) Why did he eat peas with the honey?

(9) Define the word “awkward”. (Answer) Clumsy or unskilled. (Follow Up) Recall a time that you felt “awkward”.

(10) Look on page 49 and list the clothes that the boy has on. (Answer) A hat, two sweaters, a muffler, gloves, mittens, two pairs of pants, boots, shoes, and socks. (Follow Up) Recall why the boy must not fall. Activities

1. Pick the poem you liked best and draw a picture about it.

2. Write a poem of your own about a pet or something you like.

3. Make a list of your five favorite poems from the book and write a short paragraph explaining why they are your favorite.

4. Draw a picture of something you enjoy doing and write what it is.

Introductions

1. Show the students a hat with a toy frog under it. Tell them that there is something under your hat, could they guess what it is? Today we are going to read some poems. Let’s read and see if there is a poem about this hat.

2. Have a bag with several items in it such as a mitten, a toy cow, and a toy frog. Ask the students to feel in the bag a guess what they items are. Today we will read some poems about these and a lot of other things.

3. Show the students a picture of a purple cow. Ask them if they have ever seen a purple cow. We will read a book of poems today. Let’s see if there is a poem about a purple cow.
