The Charles H. Purcell Award Recognizes Valued Contributions by Caltrans Engineering Managers

The Charles H. Purcell Award recognizes valued contributions by Caltrans engineering managers to the field of transportation engineering and transportation program management. Purcell served as California’ State Highway Engineer from 1928 to 1943 and as Director of Public Works until 1951. Established California’s extraordinary record of leadership and integrity in transportation engineering and guided the construction of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the State’s Freeway System.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominees for the Charles H. Purcell Engineering Management Award must be a Caltrans employee at the Supervising Engineer level or above at the time of nomination. Nominations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Former employees on contract or working as retired annuitants are not eligible.

GENERAL CRITERIA

Nominees must have made a major contribution to the field of transportation. The contribution may represent either a lifetime of accomplishment in the field or a single extraordinary achievement.

DEADLINE

Entries must be received by close of business March 20, 2009.

JUDGING AND AWARD PRESENTATION

Submissions will be judged on:

 Contribution to the field of transportation engineering and California’s transportation program management  Contributions to the field of transportation management through effective and exemplary leadership  Innovation in design, process, or procedure  Publications, papers, and presentation  Affiliations (professional and community)  Public benefits derived from individual’s area of responsibility

Nominations will be reviewed and winners selected by a panel of judges representative of the varied disciplines that this award honors. The award will be presented at the annual Tranny Awards banquet in June. APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Applications must include:  A completed entry form  A typewritten statement, 2 pages or less (with font no less than 12 points), describing the outstanding achievement or contribution made by the nominee to the transportation program in California  Seven (7) copies of the above mailed to: Caroline Moreno Awards Program Manager Department of Transportation 1120 N Street, Rm 1200 – MS 49 Sacramento, CA 95814
