2017-2018 School Year

JUNIOR HIGH AND SENIOR HIGH CLASS SUMMARIES:

SCIENCE:

General Science – Mrs. Elise Kilgore Apologia Exploring Creation with General Science - 2nd Edition Class meets Wednesdays only with LAB from 10:40 - 12:10 Class cost: $430 includes $20 building fee This course is designed to be a student's first systematic introduction to the sciences. The course covers topics like the history of science, scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. Therefore, its scope is quite wide. There are many hands-on experiments to do to help with clarification of studied concepts.

Physical Science - Mrs. Elise Kilgore Apologia Exploring Creation with Physical Science - 2nd Edition Class meets Wednesdays only with LAB from 12:50 - 2:20 Class Cost: $430 includes $20 building fee This course is designed to be the last science course the student takes before high school biology. The text discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist movement. There are many hands-on experiments to do, and they all use household chemicals and supplies. It is an excellent course for preparing the student to take a college-prep high school science curriculum.

Biology - Mrs. Chris Brock Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology - 2nd Edition Class meets Wednesdays only with LAB from 2:30 - 4:00 Class Cost: $430 includes $20 building fee This course is designed to be the student’s first high school science course and is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university biology course.

Chemistry - Mrs. Chris Brock Discovering Design with Chemistry by Dr. Wile – 1st Edition https://www.bereanbuilders.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=SETDDC Class meets Wednesdays with LAB from 10:40 - 12:10 Prerequisite: Algebra I Class Cost: $430 includes $20 building fee My goal in teaching Discovering Design with Chemistry is to create a love of learning about the wonders of the smallest particles of creation to my students each year. God's order is clearly seen when you begin to understand the Periodic Table and the majesty of the order that each element plays in our universe. Many students have a fear of Chemistry and while some of the subject may seem hardto some students I have a firm belief that all students can come away understanding the subject. I use several methods to present the material so that different types of learners might grasp the subject matter in their own way. I also add more experiments to the lessons to illustrate the subject matter in addition to those contained in the text. I urge students to ask questions. I ask them questions. And we explore the subject together.

Human Body - Mrs. Chris Brock Apologia The Human Body Fearfully and Wonderfully Made - 2nd Edition Class meets Wednesdays with LAB from 9:00 - 10:30 Prerequisite: Biology Class Cost: $430 includes $20 building fee My goal in teaching The Human Body Fearfully and Wonderfully Made each year is to first be practical. All of us need to understand the human body and as your students approach adulthood they need to be prepared to face illness, disease and injuries that may be coming in either themselves, their parents or potential children. Some student may be looking forward to a career in some medical field but that is not primarily my focus. (If your student is considering a medical career this is an excellent textbook for them. They should be prepared to study a bit deeper and they will be will equipped for any college courses they may desire to pursue.) In the larger picture the study of the Human Body always presents the wonder of God through the intricate creation of His masterpiece - mankind. We will dissect several organs throughout the year and the student will see just how intricate and detailed each part of the body is and how all parts of the body must work together. While there are 11 different body systems, no one system is greater than the other. All must be present or all will fail. We study disease states of all 11 systems as well. This is a challenging course but I think my students in the past have always found it a rewarding one. Forensic Science - Mrs. Chris Brock Forensic Science for High School by Barbara Deslich & John Funkhouser ISBN-13: 978-0-7575-1825-6 ISBN-10: 0-7575-1825-7 Kendell/Hunt Publishing Company Class meets Wednesdays with LAB from 12:50 - 2:20 Class Cost: $430 includes $20 building fee

I will be using Forensic Science for High School by Barbara Deslich & John Funkhouser. It will not be necessary for the student to have this book as I will copy any needed pages but, of course, you may feel free to purchase the book if you so desire.

Psychology – Mrs. Elise Kilgore Psychology: A Christian Perspective, High School Edition http://www.rocksolidinc.com/ Class meets Wednesdays from 9:00 – 10:30 Class cost: $430 includes $20 building fee In this high school level course, students will be introduced to modern psychology and schools-of-thought from a distinctly Christian perspective. As an introductory class, its scope is wide. We will explore topics like the brain and nervous system, motivation and emotion, learning and memory, consciousness, thinking, language and intelligence, personality, abnormal and social psychology, as well as treatment and research methods. This is an excellent course for readying students for Psy 101 or for those who have not taken psychology and wish to study the human mind.
