Background
In spring 2005 the Integrated Framework Plan for Land Use and Transportation (IFPLUTS) for the study area of Athy were completed. The transport recommendations from the IFPLUTS formed the basis for this Traffic Management Plan (TMP) and, in overall terms, the requirement of the TMP was to review and refine the IFPLUTS recommendations and develop specific preliminary traffic management design recommendations.
Study Area
The study area of the Athy TMP covers the area recognised as the town centre core. This area is defined as the area bounded by Stanhope Place in the North, Church Road to the South, Geraldine Road to the East and Fortbarrington Road to the West. In developing the recommendations for this Study Area due cognisance was taken of existing and future development proposals in the wider Athy area. In addition the study focussed on access to the key transport infrastructure at the Railway Station and future road proposals.
Scope of Project
Specifically, the TMP focused on the following transport issues in the town centre
