Job Title: Waterfront/Aquatics Director Reports to: Assistant Camp Director Classification: Exempt (Seasonal) Compensation Range: $275-$285 per week stipend plus room & board, limited financial assistance with obtaining necessary American Red Cross certifications. Position Purpose: To further the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of activities at the camp’s waterfront that are as safe as possible, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Provide management to the physical operation of the waterfront’s facilities and equipment.

Essential Job Functions: 1. Plan, direct, and supervise a fun waterfront program that is as safe as possible  Approve lesson plans written by waterfront/boating specialists that meet camp goals.  Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff.  Deliver creative swim and boating program activities.  Design, implement, train, and supervise buddy board system in accordance with camp’s health and safety plan submitted to Oswego County Health Department. 2. Train and supervise waterfront staff  Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.  Train waterfront and counseling staff in their waterfront responsibilities.  Supervise waterfront staff to provide a safe and high-quality program.  Supervise the waterfront staff evaluation process.  Implement the scheduling of waterfront staff.  Directly supervise other aquatic staff.  May be asked to complete in-service trainings throughout the summer. 3. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area  Work with facilities staff to set up waterfront area prior to and during staff training.  Ensure waterfront facilities and procedures comply with Oswego County Health Department regulations and American Camp Association standards.  Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.  Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety and security.  Research equipment purchases and submit purchase orders with justifications to Executive Directors, ensuring timely arrival of materials and equipment.  Check equipment, and make (or file with facilities staff for) repairs.  Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.  Survey waterfront area daily, and keep the area free of hazards and debris. This includes picking up trash and raking beach or swim area as needed.  Ensure equipment properly put away and stored; waterfront shed kept neat, orderly, and secured daily. ©American Camping Association, Inc. www.ACAcamps.org/members/jobdesc  Work with Executive Directors, Assistant Camp Director, Program Director, maintenance and facilities staff members, and Counselors to pro-actively assess and manage risk management, and/or facility concerns.

4. Participate as a member of the camp management team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.  Work with Assistant Director, Program Director and Waterfront Specialists to develop a program curriculum, awards programs, and leadership programs.  Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront.  Participate in management and staff meetings.

Other Job Duties:  Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.  Contribute to the camp community by providing assistance and leadership in all aspects of camp life/operations including programming, facility, health services, and dining services as requested.  Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.  Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.  Do not take exception to the rules because you are staff (e.g., eating in living unit).  Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.  Set a good example in demonstrating care and respect for the facility, environment, and equipment by taking due care and cleaning up after oneself.  Demonstrate a positive attitude in the face of change or adverse circumstances (e.g., weather cancelation of desired activity).  Demonstrate Christian principles of love, peace, and acceptance. “Be the change you would like to see in the world.”  Share personal faith journey with campers in manner developmentally appropriate to their needs and abilities.

Relationships:  Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.  Reports directly to Assistant Camp Director and indirectly to Executive Directors  Supervises Waterfront/Aquatics Specialists including Lifeguards and Activity Specialists, and counselors during all waterfront and lake activities. May be required to participate in life guarding to meet appropriate ratios in the absence of available, qualified staff (e.g., illness).  Works collaboratively with Activity Specialists (e.g., Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education, Physical Activity & Sports) regarding waterfront or lake programming to ensure sufficient lifeguarding support and compliance with risk management policies and procedures.  Works collaboratively with Program Director regarding special events at waterfront or on lake.  Works indirectly with counselors not involved in program provision, providing support to the Assistant Camp Director in enforcing Vanderkamp policies and procedures, providing feedback, guidance, and evaluation.  Communicates facility issues/concerns to maintenance and housekeeping staff, including submitting written work orders.

Equipment Used:  Private 45-acre lake with designated beach & swim area, two docks, and remote waterfront campsites  Lifeguarding equipment: whistles, megaphone, rescue tube  First Aid/Rescue equipment: First-aid kit, backboards,  PFDs  Boats: canoes (Rotomold plastic and aluminum), kayaks (Rotomold plastic), row boats (aluminum) including paddles/oars and painter/tie-off lines  Boat rack  Boat trailers  Rakes for beach and swim area  Floating swim and bouldering rafts  Water slides: permanent and inflatable

Qualifications (Minimum qualifications and experience)  Must be 21years of age.  Previous experience life guarding at a New York State residential camp, preferably on a lake/waterfront or at least two seasons (12 weeks) as a children’s camp lifeguard.  Current certification in American Red Cross lifeguard supervision and management, waterfront lifeguarding, water safety instructor, first aid and CPR.  Prior experience in the development and delivery of recreational programs.  Experience with one or more: canoeing, kayaking, row boating; American Canoe Association certification preferred.  Supervisory experience preferred.  Experience with aquatic/waterfront/boating equipment maintenance preferred.  Experience working with people of differing physical and developmental abilities preferred.  Must submit health history record and examination form 10 days prior to first day of staff training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Training and experience in a variety of aquatic program activities, particularly boating and swimming  Ability to schedule and supervise staff.  Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in and on the water.  Experience working with people of differing physical and developmental abilities preferred.  Willingness to live and work in a camp setting, working irregular hours.

Physical Aspects of the Position:  Ability to communicate and work with children ages 7 (+) and adults, providing necessary instruction to campers and staff.  Ability to observe camper behavior and assess its appropriateness, ability to assess and pro- actively mitigate risk management threats, enforce appropriate safety regulations and

©American Camping Association, Inc. www.ACAcamps.org/members/jobdesc emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques in accordance with camp philosophy and policies.  Ability to visually observe staff behavior and assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.  Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to human, environmental, and other hazards related to the activity.  Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.  Ability to swim, tread water, hold breath underwater, and physically assist distressed campers or staff in the water, in accordance with current American Red Cross requirements.  Endurance and agility for prolonged standing, bending, stooping, or stretching.  Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and conduct activities.  Normal Range of hearing/eyesight to observe, record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper and staff activities.  Endure daily exposure to a variety of weather conditions.  Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for short distances.
