Parents, I feel that it is my responsibility to help every student in my class succeed. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, I am very good about checking my emails and returning calls. Email is the best way to reach me. Students are encouraged to come in before or after school if they have questions or need help. I am aware of the challenges parents and students face in junior high and hope that we can work together as a team to make this year a positive and successful experience. Please read and discuss this information with your student before you sign return it to me. (A copy of the disclosure is available on my blog.)
Course of study We will be covering the 8th grade Integrated Science core put out by the state Board of Education.
Supplies needed each day- A composition note book, not a spiral bound. (to be left in class) Lined Paper Pencil and/ or pen Folder specifically for this class
Attendance policy- I will be following the district and school policy on attendance and tardies. If you are not in your assigned seat with your supplies when the bell rings you are tardy and will be marked tardy on the rolls.
Classroom Rules Be prepared Be respectful Stay in your assigned space Keep your hands and materials to yourself Follow directions Do not bring toys of any kind to class I wish to create a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing ideas and thoughts. In order for this to occur, students need to treat each other with respect and refrain from any behavior that belittles or humiliates another student. Put downs, racial or sexual harassment, or negative comments of any kind are not appropriate in this setting and will not be tolerated. I reserve the right to deal students on an individual basis.
Blog I have a blog where I will post daily bell work, assignments, notes, and rubrics (scoring guides) that can be downloaded from your home computer. http://blog.weber.k12.ut.us/lodaniels/
Grading- I do not give you a grade you earn your grade by completing and turning in assignments, projects, participating in class and taking tests. Makeup work- Makeup work is work that you missed because you were absent during my class. It is your responsibility to come in before or after school to get the assignments you missed, get them completed and turned in. You have 5 days after you are absent to complete the work and turn it in for full credit. After the 5 days the work may still be turned in but it will not be worth full credit.
Late work- Late work is any assignment that is turned in after 3:00 pm on the day that it is due. I will accept late work up until the cut off for the end of the quarter but it is only worth full credit on the day it is due. I encourage my students to make every effort to turn in assignments on time and avoid any loss of credit. Assignments are worth 100% on the day they are due. After the due date the assignment is worth 70% for 5 days. I have an assignment extension form that students may fill out in advance to extend the due date due to unexpected event. They are available in my room and must be submitted no less than 3 school days before the assignment is due. All extensions are subject to my approval. I reserve the right to apply this policy on a student by student basis.
Keeping track of your students progress- The district has gone to great lengths to make keeping track of your student’s progress as easy as possible. I make every effort to keep my scores entered into the portal in a timely manner. Assignment scores and attendance can be viewed at any time on the portal.
