We operate over 200 facilities in England, Scotland and Wales and employ around 2,500 employees. We recycle 1.2 million tonnes of waste each year.

Role Purpose To ensure that all facilities are maintained and operated in accordance with the Environmental Permit, Planning Permission, all FCC Group policies, along with any schemes or initiatives brought in by FCC and the applicable County Council.

1) To control and co-ordinate the safe and efficient operation of all sites within the Luton contract in accordance with management instructions, health and safety and legislative requirements laid down in Working Plans, Planning Permissions, Waste Management License etc. 2) Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the MRF, improving recycling performance, and finding outlets for new recycling streams, to reduce rejected material. 3) Develop and maintain a maintenance schedule for MRF and all mobile plant. 4) Ensure plant is operated and maintained in accordance with all relevant safety, environmental, and legislative requirements. 5) Undertake monthly spot checks and inspections of mobile plant. 6) Develop and implement risk assessments and safe working procedures, and be able to communicate and train to a multi-lingual work-force. 7) To assist with the safe and efficient operation of the household waste recycling centers, which form part of this contract. 8) To promote high profile helpful, courteous and professional customer service practices, thereby providing an exemplary customer service. 9) To promote and enforce the need to maximize recycling levels across all sites. 10) Fulfill all legal and contractual requirements as the Technically Competent Person for all of the sites. 11) To manage subordinate staff and day-to-day operations, including:- a) Staff Rota’s and the provision of cover for planned/unplanned absence. b) Induction of new employees/temporary labour and/or visitors to site; c) Employee relations issues; d) Identification of employee training requirements; e) Sub-contractors on site. 12) To control and co-ordinate all transport requirements to ensure waste storage is always within permitted allowances. 13) Ensure all legislative Duty of Care, Waste Carriers Certification and Consignment Note requirements/checks, along with the associated paperwork, is completed properly.

Role Definition – Environmental Manager Page: 2 of 4 14) To ensure that all plant and equipment at the sites are safe, appropriate and maintained in accordance with all health and safety regulations, as well as ensure that all daily checks and records are carried out. 15) To provide for the health and safety and welfare of all individuals on the sites. 16) To ensure that all site personnel are wearing issued uniforms and the correct PPE at all times. 17) To report to the Unit Manager and/or Regional Manager any breach of rules, act of dishonesty, malpractice or corruption by any member of the public, visitor to the site, or member of staff. 18) Ensure all accidents, near-misses or dangerous situations are recorded and investigated in accordance with FCC’s procedures, including any violence, threats or acts of intimidation. 19) To protect the Company’s ability to trade by ensuring compliance with relevant legislation at all times and especially that concerning health and safety in the workplace and the environment. 20) To deputize for the Contract Manager in his absence at management meetings and other site-related activities. 21) To monitor and supervise staff / visitors / contractors and site activities, to ensure all operations are undertaken in accordance with Risk Assessments and Safe Working Procedures. 22) Ensure attendance is regular, identifying and acting upon absences in line with current policies. 23) Ensure regular meetings / toolbox talks take place with employees to encourage feedback and to share new ideas in a consistent way. 24) Ensure that all Company Health & Safety and HR policies and procedures are complied with and applied in a fair and consistent way. 25) Identify any training needs in liaison with the Health & Safety and Training Department. 26) Any other reasonable request. 27) To deputise or assist when requested the above duties on other FCC Contract Sites.

Qualifications and Experience (preferred)

Experience working within the industry particularly HWRC’s, Transfer Stations, and MRF. Full UK Driving Licence.
