Narrative: The definitive 2016 RAND study on summer learning found that “for students to experience lasting benefits from attending summer programs, the report recommends that programs last for at least five weeks, promote consistent attendance, include sufficient instructional time and protect it, invest in instructional quality, and factor in attendance and likely no-show rates when staffing the programs in order to lower per-student costs.” Studies encourage children and families to read for 20 minutes a day throughout the summer so they’ll increase or maintain their reading levels they worked so hard to achieve. Studies show that the amount of time spent reading makes significant contribution to vocabulary, general knowledge, spelling and verbal fluency. d. Attendance: Describe strategies that will be used to encourage regular attendance. What was the daily average attendance of the summer reading program in 2017?

e. Qualifications of instructors/teachers: Describe the qualifications and background of the teachers? (Are the instructors certified teachers, college students, interns, etc.?)

f. Teacher/Instructor Training: Describe any training that program staff and/or volunteers will receive. (How long is the training? Who provides the staff training? What topics are covered in the training?)
