POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Project Officer (Capacity Development) Reports to: General Manager Location: Newtown (Sydney)
The National LGBTI Health Alliance (“the Alliance”) is the national peak body of organisations an d individuals working together to improve the health and wellbeing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans /transgender, intersex and other sexuality, sex and gender diverse (LGBTI) people. The Allianc e has established and is supporting the ‘MindOUT! LGBTI Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Project’ (the “Project”). ‘MindOUT!’is the first national project of its kind and focuses on delivering increasing awareness and providing the foundation for appropriate and targeted policy and progr am responses for LGBTI people. The Alliance is a not-for-profit public company limited by guaran tee.
This project will be informed by -
(1) the Final Report by Pricewaterhouse Coopers “National LGBTI Health Alliance – Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Project”, 31 May 2011; and (2) the Alliance’s Funding Agreement with the Australian Department of Health and Ageing.
1. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITY To build the capacity of LGBTI organisation and mainstream mental health organisations to improve mental health and suicide prevention outcomes for LGBTI people and communities.
2. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
The Project Officer (Capacity Development) [POCD] reports to the General Manger and works in a team with the Senior Policy Officer. There are no staff reporting to the POCD.
Assess available materials and tools in relation to LGBTI mental health awareness, develop new materials and for LGBTI organisation on MH-POD and other learning and development opportunities in relation to mental health and suicide prevention.
Identify, coordinate and communicate access to front-line mental health and suicide preventi on training program with Alliance members and develop and implement train-the-trainer progr am for LGBTI organisation capacity development.
Develop LGBTI organisation mental health and suicide prevention program standards for LG BTI organisations telephone counselling and organisations providing client services and oordi nate National LGBTI Health Alliance member forums on mental health and suicide prevention
Develop a national approach to LGBTI inclusiveness framework, audit tool and implementatio n approach, including LGBTI champions in mental health services.
Co-ordinate LGBTI mental health social media, on-line presence and targeted information str ategies. Develop research network and linkages in relation to LGBTI inclusiveness in relation to m ental health and suicide prevention research
Actively participate in and contribute to an ongoing process of staff meetings, quality improvement and professional development strategies. Perform other duties and contribute to LGBTI project activities of the Alliance as requested from time-to-time by the General Manager.
3. SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate print based and online information and education resources.
Demonstrated understanding of and skills in community development processes, peer education and community consultation.
Demonstrated skills in administration and event organization. Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including the ability to negotiate with a range of stakeholders. Capacity to work productively in a team both with the Alliance, its Member Organisations and mainstream mental health organisations. Understanding of and commitment to human rights for LGBTI people and communities. Willingness to travel within Australia. Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office and social media.
Desirable An understanding of mental health issues or experience working with people affected by mental health issues.
Relevant qualifications or knowledge related to public health, training, social science or other relevant fields.
Sound knowledge of the current health policy issues affecting LGBTI people and/or mainstream mental health organisations.
