Hanley Rd., St. Louis, MO 63105 Founded as part of General Motors' diesel division in 1938, Detroit Diesel Engines found use in a variety of applications, including large trucks, agricultural equipment and industrial use. Detroit Diesel is currently a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks. Detroit's popular diesel lines include the DD Series, as well as 53, 60, 71 and MBE-series engines. Identification depends on the definition of the model and the year the year is found on the engine ID tag. Find the Detroit diesel engine identification tag. You will find a model of the Detroit diesel engine headlined by a series of engines, usually above the serial unit number. Determine the year of production. Usually you will find a year of production in the top right corner of the engine ID tag. In order to read the ID label, it may be necessary to clean it with a rag and clean the solvent. The typical color for Detroit Diesel engines is green, although some engine models are painted light blue, such as the Model 60, or black, as in the case of the DD13 and 15 models. Stockbyte/Stockbyte/Getty Images Fuel injectors are a major component of all diesel engines. The fuel is pulled out of the fuel tank and pushed by the fuel pump to the fuel injectors. The injectors then spray diesel into the cylinders, allowing the cylinders to shoot. Until the late 1980s, fuel injectors were mechanical in nature. After the advent of the electronically controlled engine, fuel injectors became more advanced, relying on the computer engine to tell them when to shoot. Remove the bolts by holding the valve lid to the engine block using the ratchet key and socket. Set the valve lid to the side. Remove the exhaust multi-faceted from the engine by removing six six six-headed bolt perched on the front, middle and back of the variety. A lot of exhaust fumes are located on the passenger side of the engine. Start the engine. Watch out for six different smoke holes. A small amount of white smoke will be normal. If a multi-hole does not produce smoke, it may be an indication that the injector is not firing on this cylinder. Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal Work. Connect the Pro-Link diagnostic reader to the Deutsch vessel under the driver's side dashboard. All trucks produced and model equipped with Deutsch vessels since the introduction of electronic engines. Choose Select Cut-off test from the Pro-Link options list. Let the engine settle up to 1000 rpm and perform the cut-off cylinders. Pro-Link will indicate if the cylinder does not shoot, indicating a faulty injector. Start the engine and let it reach normal operating temperature. Connect your laptop to a Deutsch vessel under the driver's side dashboard. Running the Detroit Diesel software DDDL7.0 program. Check for fault codes listed on the DDDL7.0 Detroit Diesel diagnostic chart, and repair or remove active and inactive codes before you start troubleshooting injectors. Test the dual and triple cylinder by turning off the cylinders with Detroit Diesel DDDL7.0 software. Check the data obtained by reviewing the graphs and information collected from the Detroit Diesel test weeding cylinder and comparing them to historical engine data collected from the software. A cylinder that did not catch fire or had little power indicates a failed injector. The Detroit Diesel Nexiq Pro-Link is the fastest way to identify fault codes and troubleshooting injectors. Both leakage and damaged fuel injectors can cause serious engine problems and cause engine failure. In case of external fuel injectors leaks, the entire body of the fuel injector must be replaced. Fuel injectors are quite sturdy and rarely need to be replaced, so people who plan to buy a new one should first try cleaning the current injector. Removal: After removing the valve covers and the valve cover gaskets, but before removing any injectors, drain the oil rails by removing the drain plugs inside the valve cover. On 94-97 trucks theyʼre just under where the electrical connectors are on the gasket. These plugs are very tight; give them a sharp blow with a hammer and punch to help break them loose, then use a 1/8" Allen wrench. The oil will drain out into the valve train area and from there into the crankcase. Donʼt drop the plugs down the push rod holes! Also remove one of the plugs on top of each oil rail, (beside where the lines from the High Pressure Oil Pump enter) for a vent to allow air to enter so the oil can drain. The plugs are 5/8”. Inspect the plug O-rings and replace if necessary. If the plugs under the covers leak, it will cause a substantial loss of performance. When removing the injectors, oil and fuel from the passages in the cylinder head drains down through the injector bore into the cylinders. If not removed, this can hydro-lock the engine when cranking. There is a ~40cc dish in the center of each piston. Fluid accumulates in it, as well as in the corner on the outside of the piston between the piston top and the cylinder wall, due to the 45* slope of the cylinder bank.
