Description: TRIO-DSPS is a Student Support Services (SSS) Program that has been federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide services to 100 Students with a documented disability who also are of low-income and/or first generation. TRIO - DSPS is designed to assist participants to meet the challenges of graduating from COD and or transferring to a four-year university and therefore; provides academic, personal and career counseling support and financial aid/scholarship information to eligible participants to help them meet their goals.

Mission Statement: TRIO - DSPS is designed to assist students with documented disabilities who are of low- income and/or first generation college students. The program will assist in the graduation and transfer process from College of the Desert and to strengthen their preparation for the successful completion of the Bachelor’s Degree goal.

The TRIO - DSPS Program is located in the DSPS Center on the 1st floor in the Craven Student Services Center. TRIO - DSPS program staff shares the Center with the DSPS staff. TRiO-DSPS has 1 shared office, one office cubicle, and a part-time shared office cubicle.

2) Assessment of adequacy of current facilities:

The current space provided is insufficient for program operations. An additional office to be shared by the part-time counselor and the part-time Academic Skills Specialist, and a Resource Room for supplies and the copy machine and tutoring have been requested.

Funding/Budget: The annual funding stream is determined by the Department of Education. The Program Director is responsible for the implementation of all regulations pertaining to the TRIO - DSPS Program funds.

4 GOALS/ACHIEVEMENTS/CHALLENGES

1. Establish TRiO-DSPS Program at College of the Desert Met. Program is fully operational and is serving students. 2. Hire and Train Faculty and Staff In Progress.See “Challenges” below. 3. Market Program to Attract and Enroll at least 100 Eligible Students Met. See “Achievements” below. 4. Purchase Equipment and Supplies for Program. Met. See “Achievements” below. Program/Service Achievements 2010-11 (source: Faculty/Dir/Coord/Dean - from AUR)  Established the program on the COD campus. Hired Staff, bought equipment, supplies etc.  Served (Spring 11 & Summer 11) 99 TRIO-DSPS students.  Provided First Priority Registration to all active (good standing) TRIO-DSPS students.  Provided academic, financial aid, personal, career, and transfer counseling to students.  Conducted various workshops (Time Management, Career, Financial Aid, Stress Mgt) each semester.  College Tour to three universities in San Diego in Summer 11.  Founded the TRIO-DSPS & DSPS Club.  Cohort One = 99 students – 7 dropped = 93% retention from 09/01/10 to 08/31/11

Program/Service Challenges (source: Faculty/Dir/Coord/Dean) The TRIO - DSPS office is lacking sufficient space to fully function as required by the grant. The grant calls for a Resource Room for materials and supplies which help facilitate students’ learning process. This room needs to also be used by the Academic Skills Specialist for tutoring purposes.

Staffing continues to be a challenge. Two initial part-time staff members found full-time activities , leaving the program in a predicament. Two replacements will need to be hired and fully trained. In addition a part- time Academic Skills Specialist needs to be hired and trained in some of activilies and procedures .

Trio-DSPS continues to strive to enroll the quantity and quality of students in accordance with the grant requirements.

Program/Service Objectives/Goals for 2011-12 (source: Faculty/Dir/Coord/Dean) 1. By use of tours and workshops, teach current and future TRIO - DSPS students about the location and services of campus resources such as: DSPS, the Library, Health and Wellness Center, Financial Aid, Transfer and Career Center, the Mind Shack. 2. The TRIO - DSPS students will become knowledgable of their General Education Graduation requirements (Workshops Regarding COD, CSU, and UC General Education Patterns)

Teach current and future TRIO - DSPS students to develop their own Student Education Plans (utilizing course catalogs and on-line resources such as ASSIST.ORG 2.
