REPORTS:

MARY LIVERMORE LIBRARY

Library Report November 8, 2011

October 12 a delegation of regional members of the General Assembly visited UNC Pembroke and the Mary Livermore Library was one of three sites they visited while on campus. Care was taken to point out the attractiveness of the main reading room as well as the cramped areas for shelving and study and mention was made of the proposed new information commons building.

Delegates were also shown a few photographs from the Elmer Hunt Photograph Collection, unique holdings that are a valuable portion of our Special Collections resources.

The series of discussion and identification programs pertaining to the Elmer Hunt photographs continued on Tuesday, November 1, when the Lumbee participation in the military was the topic. Panelists who are members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) discussed their respective participation in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Then audience members were invited to help identify people in the Hunt photographs. Access to the photos through the library catalog is now a work in progress.

Another program honoring Native American Heritage Month will take place November 15, at 7:00 p.m. when Dr. David LaVere, Professor of History at UNC Wilmington, will speak on the topic “What Happened to the Lost Colony?” He will be presenting material contained in his latest book, The Lost Rocks: The Dare Stones and the Unsolved Mystery of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Lost Colony.

Melanie Wood organized an event which highlighted our holdings in Japanese anime and magna books October 27. She was assisted by Michael Alewine and Robert Arndt in providing refreshments, mango bingo and anime video clips. She would like to facilitate organization of a club of students interested in Japanese culture.

We are currently purchasing books and media but no equipment. Travel has been restricted to support of instruction at off-campus sites.

DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

I. Client Services

 Assistant CIO Cindy Saylor: o Coordinated an all-day Apple training session to learn more about new operating systems, deployment strategies, and security.  Jillena Locklear, Tabitha Locklear, Liz Cummings, and others worked on the SCCM deployment to campus labs.  Rob Hughes and Daryl Burgwyn completed work adding a fourth host to the Library Electronic Classroom thin client configuration and a RAM upgrade to 16GB. Each host now supports seven thin clients instead of the previous 10-10-8 configuration. The increase in RAM and the reduction of client load also allows more RAM to be available to each client, increasing performance.  Johnathan Kerns and Wanda Hunt worked on a number of projects: o Completed campus computer lab maps via LabStats so students can visit a webpage to view in real time what labs have available machines. The maps should be available for the public view by the end of the semester. o Designed BraveMail mobile devices setup web page, soon to be published online with other webpage updates by Melanie Jacobs. o Distributed IT Security Awareness posters throughout the campus as part of a campaign to alert users of the need to be cognizant of security risks. o Created training videos for LabTechs to assist students with accessing Blackboard Collaborate and with generating LabStats usage reports. o Collaborated with James Lewis to create DoIT TechTips YouTube videos. An example can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhCEdxQi9ZM. o Modified the RIAA Infringement procedure to include an educational initiative for students who violate the policy.  Robby Gaddy fixed a long-standing issue with the Chancellor Board Room desktop microphones for recording meetings. Robby also installed metal pegboards in Jacobs Media Services area for more efficient storage and retrieval of hardware for

CENTER FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) Report November 8, 2011

Our office is currently understaffed two positions: the Tutoring Coordinator position and the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Coordinator position. We have hired a new member to the CAE Team who will begin November 17th as the new Tutoring Coordinator. The CAE is in the process of advertising the Supplemental Instruction Coordinator (SI) position.

8 The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Academic Support Services Subcommittee MINUTES

One of the primary responsibilities of the CAE is Freshman Seminar (FRS). For the Fall 2011, there are 45 sections of FRS serving 1005 students with a pool of 42 instructors. The last day of FRS 1000 is November 7th

The CAE also provides assistance for students that are on academic probation. 105 students completed probation contracts for the Summer Sessions I and II and the Fall. Of those 105 students, only 22 are adhering to the contract. The CAE currently employs two Academic Resource Mentors who provide peer-mentoring and academic success workshops. So far this fall these staff and mentors have conducted five workshops with 12 attendees. In anticipation of the increased number of students who will be affected by the new SAP, we are proposing to hire four new Academic Resource Mentors.

The CAE partnered with the Career Center and Academic Affairs to host an Advising Week, October 17-21, the week prior to early registration. The CAE offered advising in the residence halls and the University Center, coordinated a marketing campaign to encourage students to attend Kickoff to Advising and see their advisor, assisted in the planning for the Kickoff to Advising and invited alumnae to visit the university to discuss their profession.

The First Year Advisory Board had the first meeting in October to evaluate the First Year programming at UNCP. The board consists of a representative from Student Affairs, Financial Aid, Admissions, New Student Orientation, Disability Support Services, Community and Public Relations, School of Education, School of Business and School of Arts and Sciences. They are evaluating the programming to make recommendations for improvement. They will meet again in November.

CAE’s tutoring program has had 1045 visits from 239 students. We presently employ 12 tutors in the following courses:

Currently six students from Sociology are utilizing the Resource Learning Lab. They have completed 2 out of 3 of the software programs “Write It Right”, “Paragraph Punch”, and “Essay Punch”.

The Early Alert Program utilization has increased dramatically due to faculty buy-in and Administration encouragement. For the Spring 2011 semester, the CAE experienced only 245 EA referrals. As of October the 30th, we have data based more than 451 referrals. We anticipate early alerts to taper off

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is another one of the CAE’s flagship programs. CAE currently employs 17 SI leaders. These SI leaders provide supplemental instruction for 1086 students in 35 different sections. As of October 30th, the SI leaders have provided more than 1037 contact hours to more than 359 unique students.
