*Costumes needed for all 7th graders on Wednesday, November 1 st for school mass*
Goal: To research and learn about a saint, and present what you learn to the class.
Research: In honor of All Saints Day (November 1st), each 7th grade student will choose one saint to research. Students will spend some class time researching and reading about their saint; however, most of the research will need to be done at home.
Poster: As a way of enhancing the presentation, each student will create a poster (see attached for example). The poster is a way for students to record their research and refer to when they give their presentation. The presentation poster will need to be completed at home and brought to school on the day of their presentation. Students may use any size or color poster board. Realizing that many saint websites and reading material are at a higher reading level, students are reminded to put ideas into their own words (as they understand them). Please help your child summarize their reading and put the information into their own words. Students may hand write or type the information on the poster. Legibility is key!
The following information must be included on the poster: ⇒ Student name ⇒ Saint name ⇒ Picture or drawing of saint ⇒ Feast Day ⇒Minimum of 5 facts about the saint (At least one sentence for each fact). ⇒ Memorable story from the saint’s life (At least 5 sentences). ⇒ Why you admire your saint (At least 2 sentences). ⇒ A question you would ask the saint if you could meet him/her (At least one question).
Presentation: Students will dress up as their saint and give an oral report to the class. Please help your child create a costume to represent their saint.
Students will change into their costumes at school for the school mass and on the day of their presentations. Presentations will be on the following dates: Thursday, November 2nd, Friday, November 3rd and Tuesday, November 7th. See Presentation Assignments (attached) to determine which day your child will give their oral report.
Students will have their poster to refer to during the presentation. They will share all the information on the poster and any additional information about their saint that they would like. As an option, students may show other visuals of their saint during their presentation (i.e. Saint prayer card, medal, statue, etc.), may speak in the first person (i.e. “My name is Saint Lawrence O’Toole. I was born in Ireland in 1128.”), and they may use note cards during their presentation. Please help your child practice giving the presentation at home. Scoring and Rubrics: Students will receive two grades for this project: One for the poster and one for the presentation. The poster and presentation will be scored using score sheets. See Score Sheets (attached) to help guide your project.
Mass: School Mass: We will be celebrating the Saints during mass on Tuesday, November 1st. Students will be dressed as their saint during the mass.
Final Thoughts: If, during the research process, your child would like to change saints, please let me know A.S.A.P. and I will make sure another student hasn’t already chosen that saint. The students will enjoy learning about different saints. Have fun!

Feast Day: March 21st Saint Benedict
A Memorable Stor y As a young man, St. Benedict left Rome and went looking for a place to be closer to God. For three years Benedict lived in solitude in a cave. In the cave, he lived a life of fasting and prayer. Being such a holy person, the local people would seek him out. They desired that he pass on the message of Christ to them during a time in history that was greatly in need of the Gospel.
Facts : 1. St. Benedict was born in Italy in 480. 2. St. Benedict came from a rich family. 3. St. Benedict is the patron saint of Europe, kidney disease, and students. 4. St. Benedict built his best-known monastery in Monte Cassino. 5. St. Benedict and his monks helped people in many ways. He taught people to read, write, and farm.
Why I admire St. Benedict : I admire St. Benedict because he lived in a mountain cave just to be closer to God. He turned away from sins and lived a very holy life. He is a great role model for everyone.
Question: What was it like to live in a cave for three years? Did you ever get lonely?
