Territorial Social and Economic Disparities Within the Development of Arad County
TERRITORIAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DISPARITIES WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARAD COUNTY IRENA MOCANU Romanian Academy – Institute of Geography, 12 Dimitrie Racovi ţă , 023993, Bucharest, Romania e-mail : [email protected] Abstract: Identifying the territorial disparities in the socio-economic development of Arad County implies taking the following six research stages: selecting the relevant statistical indicators, analysing their socio-economic significance, standardising the absolute values of the indicators, calculating the Complex Index of Development, delimitating and generally characterising both the favourable areas for development and the less favourable ones. The indicators were selected to reflect the specifics of agricultural, industrial and touristic activities, of the health and education systems, of the dwellings and public utility infrastructure, of the labour and inhabiting force. The territorial distribution of the value of the 24 indicators and secondary indexes emphasised in most cases a difference between the ATU (administrative territorial units) from the Eastern and Western parts of the Arad County. The Complex Index of Development (calculated as Hull Score) offered the possibility of separating the areas that were favourable for socio-economic development (generated by the urban areas along two longitudinal lineaments, e.g. Western and Central, and in the irregular areas in the Carpathian depression) from the less favourable areas (62% of the ATU in the Arad County). Key words : territorial disparities, socio-economic development, Arad County . Introduction and functions of the territory can be easily The Arad County development strategy for the indentified at a local level. Bendea University of Oradea Final Conference RO – 06 Renewable Energy 2009 – 2014, Bucharest, 11.09, .2017 INTRODUCTION Signs of use in pre-historical times. Spas attested during the Roman Empire times. First well drilled in 1885 in Felix Spa (depth 51 m, flow rate 195 l/s, temperature 49°C), still used. Exploration started in early 60’s (geological research). More than 200 geothermal wells drilled by now: • Depth: 800 – 3,500 m; • Well head temperatures: 40 - 120°C. 2 Final Conference RO – 06 Renewable Energy 2009 – 2014, Bucharest, 11.09, .2017 INTRODUCTION Proven geothermal reserves 200,000 TJ for 20 years. Annual production about 3,000 TJ. Total thermal capacity of existing wells 480 MWth (for a reference temperature of 25°C). Only about 200 MWth currently used, from 96 wells (of which 40 wells used for balneology and bathing). Capacity factors between 1% and 68% (Oradea). The Jewish Cemetery of Sathmar
TheThe JewishJewish CemeteryCemetery ofof SathmarSathmar INTRODUCTION Beth Hachaim – The Home of the Living – is how Jews call their cemeteries, because they consider the dead alive for ever and their souls immortal. A renowned phisicist let engraving on his tomb the following truth: “I am still being, just changed my aggregate”. But The Home of the Living, the cemetery, lives for as long as it maintains a spiritual tie with the descendants and conveys a meaning to posterity, then nothing is less desolate than a forgotten cemetery. Fortunately, remembering the ancestors is part of our respect to them, and respecting them is a mitzvah for us. This portfolio was thought to be a full documentation of the Jewish Cemetery from Sathmar. The main intention was to give a helping hand to those who are looking for the graves of their ancestors, then to help each documentary work regarding to Jewish burial sites, genealogy, etc. For that purpose, each readable gravestone (more then 2,300) - standing, fallen or broken, beginning with the oldest ones – have been photographed. More than 1,000 gravestones were cleaned with sandpaper to make readable at least the engraved names. Despite of my effort to document so much graves as possible, there were some missing gravestones, or not readable at all, especially those made of limestone. The pictures are recorded on two DVDs included in this portfolio, together with the pages of the cemetery registry. These can be viewed on each PC, magnified or printed if wanted. The Orthodox Cemetery Registry pages are scaned to avoid mistakes at transcription, but those of the Status Quo Ante cemetery are completed using the original register. -
