My birthday was ruined.
Daddy thought it was a good time for me (James) to visit Uncle Romie and his wife, Aunt Nanette, up north in New York City.
“But things we care about are pretty much the same,” (said Uncle Romie).
“Your uncle’s working very hard, so we won’t see much of him for a while,” (said Aunt Nanette).
All these strangers talking to each other about their families and friends and special times, and all because of how my Uncle Romie’s painting reminded them of things.
