Schmidt 8.1 Introduction Embryological development and biology of the Acanthocephala occupied the attention of several early investigators. Most notable among these were Leuckart (1862), Schneider (1871), Hamann (1891 a) and Kaiser (1893). These works and others, including his own observations, were summarized by Meyer (1933) in the monograph celebrated by the present volume. For this reason findings of these early researchers are not discussed further, except to say that it would be difficult to find more elegant, detailed and correct studies of acanthocephalan ontogeny than those published by these pioneers. -

A total of 7 aquatic bird species of four orders were found as hosts of acanthocephalans: 5 species of the family Polymorphidae and one of the family Centrorhynchidae were established. Morphological descriptions are presented, illustrating their variability. Polymorphic diploinflatus, P. magnus, P. cf.phippsi and Southwellina hispida are reported first for the Hungarian fauna. When reviewing the endoparasites of birds in the regions of Hortobágy and Biharugra, EDELÉNYI (1964) described two acanthocephalan species from aquatic birds: Polymorphic striatus (Goeze, 1782) in anseriform and cico-niiform hosts, and Filicollis anatis (Schrank, 1788) in anseriform and gruiform birds. MURAI et al. (1983, 1985) recorded in Hortobágy National Park and Kiskunság National Park the following acanthocephalan parasites from aquatic birds: Polymorphic minutie (Goeze, 1872), Filicollis anatis (Schrank, 1788), Centrorhynchus aluconis (Mueller, 1780) and C. lancea (Westrumb, 1821). The aim of the present paper is to present new data on the species compo-sition, morphology and distribution of acanthocephalans from aquatic birds in Hungary. Yet, whether 4 there are any general patterns in the factors that shape host specificity across parasites more 5 broadly is unknown. Here we constructed a molecular phylogeny for 249 helminth species 6 infecting free-range mammals and find that the influence of ecological factors and evolutionary 7 history varies across different measures of host specificity. Whereas the phylogenetic range of 8 hosts a parasite can infect shows a strong signal of evolutionary constraint, the number of hosts a 9 parasite infects does not. -

Disentangling a freshwater amphipod–acanthocephalan system from ecological and molecular perspectives by Zhuoyan Song A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in SYSTEMATICS AND EVOLUTION Department of Biological Sciences University of Alberta © Zhuoyan Song, 2019 Abstract One of the major goals in ecological research is to understand factors that influence distribution, diversity and prevalence of parasites and their hosts. How hosts are distributed geographically clearly restricts the spatial distribution of associated obligatory parasites. This restriction is more complicated for multi-host parasites, because they are affected by the geographical distribution of both intermediate and final host species. Taxonomic and genetic diversity of parasites in a particular area can be influenced by the history of colonization, with time available for colonizing a new area being particularly relevant. Prevalence of parasites in final hosts is likely to be positively related to their prevalence in intermediate hosts, but what determines the prevalence of parasites in intermediate hosts? In this thesis I explore these questions using a host–parasite system widely distributed in freshwater bodies across the Holarctic: acanthocephalan worms that use aquatic birds and mammals as final hosts and the amphipod Gammarus lacustris Sars as an intermediate host. Both the intermediate host and the parasites can be transported long distances to new areas, including newly formed water bodies, by clinging to the feathers of birds (the amphipods) or by being transported inside the bodies of intermediate and final hosts (the acanthocephalans). I explore the mechanisms influencing acanthocephalan prevalence and the intraspecific genetic diversity of Polymorphus species in their intermediate host G. -

ABSTRACT The present study was planned to identify the Acanthocephalan parasitic agents and characterization of the histopathological changes in the digestive tract. 2.35 % of the examined birds were found parasitized with both mature and immature stages of Acanthocephala. They are attached to the mucosal tissues of the digestive tract by their spiny proboscis. The sex of the adult filicollis is clearly distinguishable, they have a globular bulb proboscis armed with many hooks that are arranged radially (Yamaguti, 1963) or in a star shaped pattern at the apex of the proboscis (Soulsby, 1968). The present study was the first record of filicollis species in aquatic birds examined around shores of El Manzala Lake in Port Said Province and also new host record as well. INTRODUCTION About 1000 species of Acanthocephalan worms had been described, all are endoparasites which are believed to attain maturity in the alimentary tract of vertebrates (Schmidt, 1969). Acanthocephela of family Filicollidae (Petrotschenko, 1956) contain two genera Filicollis; (Luhe, 1911) and Parafilicollis (Yamaguti, 1963). Yamaguti, 1963 retained filicollidae but correctly transferred its genera to Echinorhynchide, (Southwell and 1 Kafr El-Sheikh Vet.Med.J. Two of these species are from birds collected in the United Kingdom: Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) crassicollis (Villot, 1875) from Charadrius hiaticula L. and P. (P.) odhneri Lundström, 1942 from C. hiat- icula and Haematopus ostralegus L. Th e third species, P. (P. ) charadrii (Yamaguti, 1939), is from Charadrius alexandrinus nihonensis Deignan in the Pescadore Islands (near Taiwan). Since the morphology of the three species is poorly known, these specimens are described and fi gured and any variation is commented upon. A key to the species of the subgenus Plagiorhynchus is presented. -
