Mauricio Salas, por guiarme y colaborar en la ejecución de este trabajo investigativo, aportando todo su conocimiento para la culminación del estudio. 7 RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar la prevalencia y los factores de riesgo asociados a los parásitos gastrointestinales de las aves de traspatio. La investigación se desarrolló en la parroquia Chicán, en la Ciudad de Paute, Azuay, Ecuador. El procedimiento consistió en tomar muestras de heces frescas de las aves durante las horas de la mañana y llevadas al laboratorio donde se realizaron exámenes coprológicos con la técnica de Flotación y sedimentación, conjunto a esto se realizaron encuestas epidemiológicas a los propietarios en donde se consideraron tres variables; desparasitación, alojamiento y presencia de otros animales. Se analizaron 384 muestras concluyendo con una prevalencia del 97,66% (375/384); presentándose los Coccidios como los de mayor frecuencia con un 74,74% (287/384), seguido de Capillaria spp con el 22,92% (88/384), Ascaridia galli con el 14,32% (55/384), Heterakis gallinarum con el 10,42% (40/384), Strongyloides spp con el 7,29% (28/384), Hymenolepis spp con el 3,13% (12/384), Echinostomun revolutun con el 2,08% (8/384), Choannotaenia infundibulum con el 1,04% (4/384). Para el cálculo del riesgo se obtuvo para la variable desparasitación un OR de 0,1458, mientras que para el cálculo de la variable presencia de otros animales se obtuvo un OR de 0,2707, finalmente para el cálculo de alojamiento se obtuvo un OR de 1.6667. 8 ABSTRACT The objective of this work is to show the prevalence and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal parasites of backyard poultry. The research was developed in Chican town, in the City of Paute, Azuay, Ecuador. The procedure consisted of taking samples of fresh feces of the backyard poultry during the morning hours and taken to the laboratory where they were carried out test examinations with the technique of flotation and sedimentation, together with epidemiological surveys were conducted to the owners where three were considered. variables; deworming, housing and the presence of other animals. We analyzed 384 samples concluding with a prevalence of 97,66% (375/384); Coccidia were presented as the most frequent with 74,74% (287/384), followed by Capillaria spp with 22,92% (88/384), Ascaridia galli with 14,32% (55/384), Heterakis gallinarum with 10,42% (40/384), Strongyloides spp with 7,29% (28/384), Hymenolepis spp with 3,13% (12/384), Echinostomun revolutun with 2,08% (8/384), Choannotaenia infundibulum with 1,04% (4/384). Phylum-wide nematode phylogenetic hypotheses have mainly been based on nuclear rDNA sequences, but more recently complete mitochondrial (mtDNA) gene sequences have provided another source of molecular information to evaluate relationships. Although there is much agreement between nuclear rDNA and mtDNA phylogenies, relationships among certain major clades are different. In this study we report that mtDNA sequences do not support the monophyly of Ascaridida, Oxyurida and Spirurida (clade III) in contrast to results for nuclear rDNA. Results from mtDNA genomes show promise as an additional independently evolving genome for developing phylogenetic hypotheses for nematodes, although substantially increased taxon sampling is needed for enhanced comparative value with nuclear rDNA.

Accepted 22 May, 2012 A study to investigate the intensity of ectoparasites and gastro-intestinal tract worms of chickens in winter and summer was conducted in Ward 28 of Murehwa District in Zimbabwe. Sixty chickens given to local farmers to rear under the free-range system were examined for parasites; 30 in summer of 2009 and the other 30 in winter of 2010. In both seasons, ectoparasites collected were Argas persicus, Echidnophaga gallinacea, Dermanyssus gallinae and Cnemidocoptes mutans. The intensities of A. persicus (t= 2.54, p= 0.012) and E. gallinacea (t= 4.146, p= 0.000) were significantly higher in summer. There was no significant difference in seasonal intensity of D. gallinae (t= 0.631, p= 0.532) and C. mutans (t= 0.024, p= 0.978). The intensity of the nematode, Ascaridia galli (t= 3.889, p= 0.001) and the cestode, Choataenia infundibulum (t= 3.286, p= 0.004) were significantly higher in summer. There were no significant differences in the intensities of Allodapa suctoria (t= 0.031, p= 0.971), Heterakis gallinarum (t= 1.176, p= 0.248), Capillaria obsignata (t= 0.141, p= 0.890), Tetrameres americana (t= 0.514, p= 0.603), Hymenolepis spp.

On behalf of an ongoing project on diversity of insect pathogenic and insect parasitic nematodes of Iran, a new species was collected and characterized. This species was collected in soil from the Mashhad, Arak, and Mahalat regions of Iran through 2011-2012 using Galleria larvae baits. Based on morphologic and morphometric traits as well as SEM images, the species tentatively has been identified as Oscheius tipulae. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and 18S rDNA genes confirmed the species delimitation. This is the first record of this species from Iran. These nematodes either have a passive relationship with their insect hosts and use it as a vector to reach their primary hosts or they attack and invade their insect partners then kill, sterilize or alter their development. In this work I used the internal transcribed spacer 1 of ribosomal DNA (ITS1-rDNA) and the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase subunit I (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (nd4) genes to investigate genetic diversity and phylogeny of six species of the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis. Generally, cox1 sequences showed higher levels of genetic variation, larger number of phylogenetically informative characters, more variable sites and more reliable parsimony trees compared to ITS1-rDNA and nd4. The ITS1-rDNA phylogenetic trees suggested the division of the unknown isolates into two major phylogenetic groups: the HP88 group and the Oswego group. All cox1 based phylogenetic trees agreed for the division of unknown isolates into three phylogenetic groups: KMD10 and GPS5 and the HP88 group containing the remaining 11 isolates. KMD10, GPS5 represent potentially new taxa. The cox1 analysis also suggested that HP88 is divided into two subgroups: the GPS11 group and the Oswego subgroup.

A total of 7 aquatic bird species of four orders were found as hosts of acanthocephalans: 5 species of the family Polymorphidae and one of the family Centrorhynchidae were established. Morphological descriptions are presented, illustrating their variability. Polymorphic diploinflatus, P. magnus, P. cf.phippsi and Southwellina hispida are reported first for the Hungarian fauna. KEY WORDS: Acanthocephala, Polymorphidae, Centrorhynchidae, morphology, taxonomy, intraspecific variability, aquatic birds, Hungary. When reviewing the endoparasites of birds in the regions of Hortobágy and Biharugra, EDELÉNYI (1964) described two acanthocephalan species from aquatic birds: Polymorphic striatus (Goeze, 1782) in anseriform and cico-niiform hosts, and Filicollis anatis (Schrank, 1788) in anseriform and gruiform birds. MURAI et al. (1983, 1985) recorded in Hortobágy National Park and Kiskunság National Park the following acanthocephalan parasites from aquatic birds: Polymorphic minutie (Goeze, 1872), Filicollis anatis (Schrank, 1788), Centrorhynchus aluconis (Mueller, 1780) and C. lancea (Westrumb, 1821). The aim of the present paper is to present new data on the species compo-sition, morphology and distribution of acanthocephalans from aquatic birds in Hungary.
